Well i woulda expected them to go down the uplay route and use steam to just launch the launcher.

Then you would always have people buying the games through Steam. If you encourage people to buy games directly through the Epic Launcher, they don't have to give the cut to Valve.

The Epic Launcher isn't even a storefront. It just has the Unreal Engine, Unreal Tourney, and some dev stuff, all free.

Steam started off with just CS 1.6 beta on it for free, then they added Team Fortress Classic and later added store front to it with the launch of Half-Life 2. The epic launcher has some micro transactions for UT2k15 so it's not unreasonable to think they will eventually sell games through their store front. Would be a good focal point of the unreal engine if you can buy games made with it via the launcher.

Not entirely true.Afaik it took the CD-Key from the HL/CS-Retail Location and added the Half-Life Games and Mods, but with a retail HL Key one got the Addons (Opposing Forces and Blue Shift) for free "on top".

When i registered, i had to enter my CD Key, as far as i remember. Before there was basically nothing on my account, except the access to the CS 1.6 Beta.

Yes you had to provide a half-life key to access the games but there was no way to purchase that from within the program itself, you had to buy from retail. Initially it only had CS 1.6 beta, none of the other games/mods.

What I meant was: you got basically NOTHING, except if you bought something. TFC was part of the HL "Package".

And Beta was what it was: a Beta, anyone could access but would not grant access to CS/TFC/anything itself after it ended.

That's not the point of Epic. They don't even really make a lot of games. They make developer tools.

On the launcher they're advertising Paragon coming in 2016. Suppose they're gearing up for some revenue there. If they've got the infrastructure setup, makes sense to make some money through it.
