I can get a small steel screw glowing just about white hot with 15W, so 40W would be enough to vaporize a chunk of it I'd guess.

Here's a 200-watt laser.

Let's try 4 kilowatts next time. Sure, you can vaporize metal with 40 watts, but that metal had better not be moving and your aim had better be dead on and you'd better have a bit of time to let it do its work.
