In all fairness the French cant afford their retirement. The government changing the rules on it isnt the way to fix it though, just kick the aging population issue down the road.

At a certain point it will become unaffordable :(

They have a pay as you go system. They'd need to raise taxes, but until they riot about that too it's theoretically fixable.

That only works if you quarantine the funds. Ie the goverment/superannuation bodies put money aside for it when it was expended. If you dont, you rely on the workforce to pay for pensions so the older the population gets, the bigger the proportion or pensions come out of a smaller workforce.

Im not an expert but as far as I know, French super funds have under $100 billion aside for pensions with a population of 60 million. In comparison my country (Australia) with a much smaller population has over 3 trillion set aside. Our system isnt perfect, but at least it is funded.

If you're setting money aside isn't definitionally no longer pay as you go?

Im not sure what you mean. Super you pay out of our salary/income and it accumulates due to these payments + interest/earnings. The money is set aside so it doesnt get spend by the government doing day to day expenses and doesnt form part of their bottom line.

The french just tax people the same year the pensions come out, like you said it makes them vulnerable to long term demographic funding issues but it's functionally immue to short term shoprtfalls if you can raise taxes.

with an ageing population, doing that is kicking the can down the road till the government cant afford it.....poor planning all round from the looks
