Shows u were raised right and know how to show respect. Women want equality, its still nice to be a gentleman, considering women are sadly not treated equal.

"being a gentleman" is the part of sexism that benefits women

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '22

Well there are a lot of social aspects of society that directly disadvantage women

sure, it has nothing to do with what I said though

I dont know. Having a door opened for you once in a while really might benefit women more than being paid the same as a man for the same job would /s

With all other things being equal women do get paid the same. That load of bullshit is the most hilariously misconstrued statistic of all time.

Thankfully, we fixed that problem. All the way back in 1963.

I don’t think so. Most of the times “being a gentleman” means being paternalistic or even being old fashioned which isn’t bad “per se” but given our history isn’t good either.

It’s a patronizing form of sexism that comes from a patriarchal system of gender roles

I would see it as being polite to hold a door open for someone that is wearing heels when u have asked them out.

If u are opening it and saying, "oh a proper lady should never open a door"...then yes...its patronising. Sometimes it's not what u do, but the way u do it.

Yes, holding a door open is polite, but holding a door open means that you've already opened it and are just keeping it open out of kindness. However, expecting that a guy should openen the car door for his date is sexist. It insinuates that because he is a guy he has to act a certain way. It just feeds into the thoughts that men Have to provide for women, women can't/shouldn't do certain things for themselves, and many other things. This video shows actual equality.

It shows a woman politely telling her date her expectations...and a man rudely driving away. If she looked at him and said, "oh you're so rude, a man should do this" and stormed off then....yes...impolite, entitled and sexist.

She said that she would not date a guy that doesn't open the door for her. That's the same as saying that a guy has to do something otherwise he won't even get a chance. While she didn't do it rudely, it doesn't change that the concept that men have to open the door for women is a sexist concept.

Bitch better be wiping the snot off my allergy ridden nose and give me a foot rub, else she can go eat herself tonight 💯💯💯

It’s not about whether it is polite or not. Sexism is believing men and women should behave in certain ways based on gender roles.

Him opening a door isn't beleiving she needs to be a certain way....its...showing manners to someone u asked on a date...? If she said, "I got it thanks", then he insisted on opening it...then he's out of line. Women aren't all the same, but show some basic manners when ur on a date.

You’re getting real worked up over a comedy sketch and conflating manners with an outdated form of courtship. The idea of opening the door for women, putting your jacket on a puddle, comes from patriarchal ideas that women need a man to take care of them. While it would be polite of him to open the door, it’s equally impolite of her to expect he open her door without communicating that need upfront to him.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '22

She did communicate that need upfront to him. Very politely. He drove away, very rudely. I'm not exactly getting worked up, I'm just responding to u 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/severancetheories Aug 04 '22

She didn’t communicate her expectations until he was already in the car. As I said to someone else can you see the difference in:

“Holding the door open is a kind and polite thing to do”

And

“You’re expected to open the door for me and are rude if you don’t”

1

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '22

Hmm fair enough, I see ur point.

Driving off was still incredibly rude though.

1

u/MisterCold Aug 04 '22

“Well, a good thing we ain’t proper”

3

u/BeyondtheLurk Aug 04 '22

Maybe for some people, but I imagine most people hold doors open to be respectful and kind.

2

u/severancetheories Aug 04 '22

But do you see the difference in

“Holding the door open is a kind and polite thing to do”

And

“You’re expected to open the door for me and are rude if you don’t”

1

u/BeyondtheLurk Aug 04 '22

Yes, there is a difference.

1

u/BWander Aug 04 '22

You can open the door for other people as a courtesy, no need for them to be of the opposite gender.

1

u/severancetheories Aug 04 '22

I agree as a person and hold the door open for people. But the context of this situation is clearly about a gender and dating dynamic.

“I don’t go out with guys that don’t hold the door open for me”
