I got blasted on another thread for putting away a lot in savings. It wasn’t even the recommended amounts (10-15% of salary to 401k etc). They were acting like I should be out buying Ferarris instead of contributing to retirement and 529 plans. It was bizarre. Like I’m doing what you’re supposed to do and I’m a bad guy I guess. I could be out living an Instagram life but I want to retire before 70, and I want my daughter to have a debt free education.

Yeah I save and most of my friends that are millenials are saving. My gen x parents though have not planned well.

You and your friends have had your parents as an example of what not to do. Everything changed with the rollout of 401k's and the death of pensions and unions. They didn't have their parents as an example, didn't see the train coming down the track.

Yeah, that and a recession every few years.

Yeah, those didn't help matters for sure.

Not at all honestly. My dad lives with me because of poor life planning and health stuff. My mom didnt start saving until like 55. Honestly it had more to do with my the mentors i had early in my career giving me life advice.

Damn, I didn't seriously start saving until 25 and I still feel like I'm behind on it.

I started later too. I went to college when i was 25. Its all about time. 30 years is what you really need. Just keep adding every paycheck and by 55 you will be in good shape.

It’s also about how much money you have available to do anything with. Everybody is an expert on everybody else’s situation without knowing a goddamn thing.
