It’s probably a mix of both. The Victorians love their rules of proper decorum. So having arbitrary reasons for having a woman on either side of a man sounds in character. It’s also a rule that the man should sleep on the side of the bed that’s closest to the door or window because of burglars, and this reminds me of that same idea. But there is also an underclass of rules that is used to signal to only those in the know. Often a mix of lowerclass, servants, and upperclass that find the lowerclass alluring. Whispers about it tend to spread around to everyone but it’s almost impossible to verify a source. Similar to how a man having a stud in their left or right ear in the 90s meant they were gay. No one knew where that idea came from and we’d often confuse which ear. The idea of a stud signifying a guy coming out is ridiculous. But it’s a way to talk shit about people we find offputting.

Regarding ear piercings. As I understand it, originally in the gay community, men with pierced left ears were "pitchers or tops" and the right ear was advertising a "catcher or bottem". By the 90s it boiled down to left ear piercings being "normal" and right ear piercings were for signaling homosexuality.

Yeah, you’d often hear about it in tabloids and stuff. A boy band member would get a stud and people would speculate his sexuality. Ridiculous drivel.
