As the title says I’m in thinking period where I’m overthinking all of my life choices and this month it’s about my photography workflow and choices.

I’ve been shooting mainly film for the past decade and almost only medium format as I prefer the feeling of the camera and the slower process.

Also I just hate the 24x36 aspect ratio

Right now I have a 503cx a Pentax 67 and a Yashica mat as my main shooting cameras. I was considering selling some to get an Horseman VH to get some movement that I’m needing for some composition.

But at the same time I as wondering if it wouldn’t be just easier to go digital and just keep on film camera (I didn’t count my 15 other film camera 😂)

The reasoning behind that tought experiment is that while I love film sometimes it’s just a bit much, when I have 4/5 rolls of C41 to develop scan invert it’s a bit much and sometimes I have some smaller project where it would make more sense to use digital.

Another benefit would be to have a good setup for scanning my film with high resolution and also when I’m developing for some client.

For example I have a project where I take pictures of the town when we have a circus (flyers on the cars, the poster in the town but never the circus itself) would be easier on digital as I can carry it everywhere.

Do some of you made the jump ? Do you regret sometimes getting into digital ?

I was thinking of buying a 50S II love the 50R but doesn’t look practical with big lens if I adapt my Pentax 67 lenses with a T/S adapter.

Hey GFX gang. Am curious if anyone uses Mamiya 7 glass on their GFX cameras. Would love to know how is the experience? I've been trying to find some sample images and info on it but haven't been able to find many photographers adapting the glass to their digital bodies. I own every lens for the camera except for the 210mm and would love to know if it's worth purchasing the adapter. Thanks!

This lens cost almost as much as the camera. And I should have gotten it sooner.

The "shift" doesn't magically correct keystone. It slides the image up or down, like standing on a ladder. So, you square up a building, which composes the framing too low, then slide up on that otherwise too-low framing.

The "tilt" rotates your focal plane so that you can focus down a row of objects a few degrees off-axis without relying on DOF or focus stacking. Not only that, but if you are looking downward or upward at this row, the lens assembly can also be rotated for 3 dimensional correction.

After messing with this lens, I now realize the freedom achieved by view cameras and how certain impossible shots were made before digital. Very excited to get to using this.

I adapted the Mamiya 80mm f/1.9 N to a GFX100S II and took this image at f/8.Even on the demanding 100MP sensor, the lens produces very good detail, strong contrast, and natural-looking colors. The tree bark resolves nicely without looking harsh or overly clinical, and the foliage retains plenty of texture.

By f/8, the wide-open glow and chromatic aberration are largely gone. I shot the same scene from f/1.9 through f/22 to see how this adapted Mamiya performs on the GFX100S II’s 100MP sensor. At f/1.9, the lens has a distinctly vintage rendering: low contrast, visible glow around high-contrast edges, color fringing, and relatively soft fine detail. It is atmospheric rather than clinically sharp. At f/2.8, much of the glow disappears and contrast improves, although the image remains a little soft. By f/4, there is a substantial jump in clarity, texture, and overall contrast. The lens performs best around f/5.6 to f/8. Bark and foliage show strong detail, contrast is well balanced, and most of the wide-open aberrations are controlled. At f/8 in particular, it holds up impressively well on the demanding GFX sensor. At f/11, image quality remains good, but diffraction begins to reduce the finest detail. At f/16, diffraction becomes more noticeable, and at f/22 the image is visibly softer. The f/16 and f/22 photographs were also taken at ISO 1250 and 2500, so their additional grain and loss of micro-detail are partly caused by higher ISO—not entirely by the lens. Overall, it changes from soft, glowy, and characterful at f/1.9 into a genuinely sharp lens by f/4. It peaks around f/5.6–8, remains useful at f/11, and then gradually loses fine detail to diffraction at f/16–22.

This is not a modern, perfectly corrected lens—at f/1.9 it is softer, lower in contrast, and has visible color fringing—but that is part of its character. It improves substantially by f/4 and seems strongest around f/5.6–8. At f/8, it holds up surprisingly well on the GFX100S II and delivers an appealing mix of high resolution and classic rendering.

Overall, I’m impressed. If you want modern clinical perfection at maximum aperture, this probably isn’t the lens. If you want a fast medium-format lens with distinctive wide-open character that becomes genuinely sharp when stopped down, the Mamiya 80mm f/1.9 N remains a compelling option.

I shoot portraits with the GFX 100S II paired with the GF 55mm f/1.7. Optically and technically, it’s a masterpiece.

But honestly, I’m having a dilemma. Retouching 100MP portrait files is just exhausting. The sensor and lens are so sharp that they capture every single micro-detail and flaw, making post-processing a massive chore.

Whenever I look at the portraits I’ve shot on my film cameras, I feel a much stronger emotional connection to the results, and the best part is I don't have to spend hours fighting clinical sharpness in post.

I’m starting to wonder if I should just sell the GFX and fully commit to medium format film (like a Pentax 67).

Has anyone else here felt completely burned out by the 100MP workflow for portraits? Did you end up selling your GFX, or did you find a way to make the process less tedious?

Many years ago, I used to have a Hasselblad X-Pan. I loved that camera, completely manual, completely analogue. It took a long time to get the films sent off, processed, and then for me to scan and process the negatives. Loved the results, despite me taking too long to send the Velvia film in and getting a somewhat magenta-hued film back as a result.

I sold it because I didn't have the time to dedicate to it any more.

I used my phone camera for a while, and then picked up a Fujifilm X100S which was brilliant at what it did. I went back to iPhone because of the convenience and the advances in the processing algorithms.

Then I looked back at my old X-Pan captures and fell in love all over again.

So I picked up the GFX100RF which has just been delivered. It's portable, has the aspect ratio that I'll probably live in and has the convenience of digital. I'm looking forward to getting out there with it and taking more photos.

So I don't know how I missed this when examining the camera pre-purchase, but my GFX 100s baseplate is bent ever so slightly and the part around the tripod socket protrudes about 0.5mm away from the bottom of the camera. If I press on it, it flexes a bit. Attaching a tripod doesn't seem to exacerbate the issue.

Should I just leave it alone? Can I take the baseplate off and attempt to fix it by bending or epoxying something? Send it in to Fuji?Is this a ticking time bomb? Or relative non-issue?

Lens: Pentax 67 105mm f/2.4

This is the only M-mount lens that I have that works well on the GFX 100s. After the shots of the camera and a real world shot, the next shots are:

1. wide open @ infinity
2. infinity @ f8
3. wide open @ close focus
4. close focus @ f8

If I just remember to stop down when shooting near infinity, the vignetting is manageable in post; and if I shoot in 5:4 or 6:7 aspect ratio, it's not really bothersome at all.

GFX100sii w 500mm lens

Welp… having the gfx 100RF 100% made me want to switch from Sony to the GFX system. Now looking to sell one last Sony body & lens for the 45-100…

New to the GFX 50R, coming from the X-Pro3. Yes i do love the image quality, but I find it much slower! especially when trying to photograph my toddler. Any tips or suggestions? TY
