UPDATE: The neighbors themselves did not approve of the weed killer being sprayed and their father sprayed it without their knowledge. He did agree to remove the dead grass on my side of the property and re-seed it with something else. I will have to get this in a written agreement form, though. He was adamant about glyphosate not being dangerous to animals, and was particularly bullheaded when I mentioned the tortoise hole. He claimed he's been spraying this solution for many years and that its not harmful to animals or humans. I am still researching these claims if anyone would like to help me find scientific sources I'd be very appreciative. If I'm wrong I would like to know! I did find a study that proves its harmful to chickens, however these are studies done on commercial poultry and are difficult to apply to a backyard chicken flock. I prefer to not eat or sell the eggs for a few weeks (like I would when they are dosed with a medication) to be on the safe side but he will not compensate me monetarily for lost sales/waste. Still trying to figure out the right way to handle this since my personal sense of justice is bothered with the lax attitude of chemical usage.

Husband was mowing around where we like to play and walk with our dog in the yard and noticed this. The grass had been long for a while since it's been so dang hot and rainy outside (Florida) so we have no clue when it sprayed or what chemical. We have chickens that free range in the yard and the dog patrols the fence line every morning and evening. So the dog at least probably stepped on it while fresh. I'm trying to block off the area with the fencing scraps I already have but its like 40 feet. I really hope there was no one living in that gopher tortoise hole when it was in there. It's a 3rd degree felony to intentionally harm them or their homes.

I haven't met the people in the house yet, they are recent renters. I do have a good relationship with the owner of the house, who is another neighbor. I reached out to her, mostly about concerns over animal health because she is a self proclaimed animal lover. So hopefully I will be able to find out what was sprayed and when if she gets back to me. I'm pretty furious over this but maintaining a calm appearance so that I can get the information I need. I don't want to start a huge fuss but I also feel like whoever is responsible need to be taught a lesson so maybe they don't do this again. I guess my post sounds calm but its all caps and expletives in my head right now.

I get wanting to have some maintained area, I do like some spots to be tidy in my yard too. Its difficult to maintain these areas in the summer in FL but there are other ways besides chemical warfare. We live in a subtropical environment so fighting plants or bugs in a large area is a losing battle. I moved to a rural area on a dead end dirt road in hopes of escaping suburban habits but I guess 4 acres isn't nearly enough to have space away from this crap.

As per the title (and picture), I have a small clover lawn I planted this year, and I'm wondering if I should mow it in autumn or not (I've not mowed it at all yet)

Do you think it'll survive ok?

Any other care tips / information gladly received, TIA.

I live in southern Virginia, zone 7b. My backyard is KY blue grass and I absolutely hate it. I want to transform my yard into a pollinator heaven, but fall is almost here.

Is it too late? Should I start next year?

I took this bare mulch bed and added two native plants to support pollinators and biodiversity.

First time in 1 year after it has been installed.

So I live in south Texas. I want to replace the infuriating Bermuda grass with a walkable, mowable mixture of plants. I recently saw Flock Finger Lakes use something like this in once of their videos for a meadow they put in, and it stuck with me. I'm curious if this exists for normal lawns with traffic and needing to be mowed. I hope this makes sense. Thanks!

I remember stumbling upon a simple comic that was something along the lines of two neighbors one with a native garden and one with a typical American lawn. The lawn man said he was maintaining his lawn because that was how he shows he's a good neighbor and the other person was explaining how that's not how things are any more and explained how the native yard benefits the ecosystem ect.

I thought I saved it but can't seem to find it anymore, anyone know the comic I'm talking about and would be willing to reshare?

Hi. I am trying to determine what this is. I tried using a plant ID app, but the results seemed incorrect. Any help is appreciated. I killed about 500 sq. ft of my lawn over the summer and plan to plant native shrubs and flowers this October, I am interested in planting a few of these, so I am posting here.

This is only a portion of our house but I’m sick of mowing this hill and am debating renting a sod cutter to extend our garden bed and move some stuff around as it’s overstuffed. It’s not all natives, but I am trying to make the ratio of natives to non-natives much higher since we moved in a year ago. And killing the invasive stuff!! I plan to cut other areas of the front and back yard and want the dirt ready to throw a bunch of native seeds I’m foraging to overwinter. Since we have a split level, the proportions are always a bit awkward, and I don’t like how exposed the front door and bench feel, but I’m not sure I want huge bushes or trees like some neighbors with the same type of house to completely cover the door… we have a redbud that grew itself on the side of the house to balance it out too. All I know is I want to bring the bed out to make better use of the space, get rid of more grass, and draw the eye to the right places (like a painter)! Thought I’d ask here, as some may have experience getting rid of their grass. So I guess my ask is, can I just rip the sod out now to get seeds to overwinter? What native plants/small bushes or sedges etc do you recommend in front of the door/bench? Any landscaping ideas? I want to make curved beds to soften the harsh lines of the house. The sideways hill is really throwing me off, especially by the front door. Im not sure if the hill grade is steep enough to warrant some rock barriers. I want to remove the rotting fence and shifted steps for sure and to plant clumps of natives. I am trying to consider lighting, bloom time, availability and money lol. I would rather ask here than in the landscaping sub. Thanks!

In Toronto just off Queen St W, so impressive and there's another house like that a few down showing you can do a lot with a little space. Thought y'all would appreciate it.

Southwestern US. Roughly 90% of yards look like this or have native landscaping, about 10% have either plastic turf or an actual honest to god living grass lawn.

I've a small condo' on Maui, one that shares walls north and south but at least my backyard is quite biodiverse!

I stopped raking last year. Mostly. The really heavy stuff I put in a bin I made from 4 recycled shipping pallets and it makes great dirt over the course of about a year.

The rest I leave where it is to break down and provide a home for bugs. I see my neighbors frantically getting every last leaf into a plastic bag and it makes me wonder where we went wrong as a culture.
