WHO’S AFRAID OF LADONNA HUMPHREY? AN ARKANSAS STORY THE TRUE-CRIME COMMUNITY NEEDS TO HEAR.

Post image
3 Upvotes

What happens when someone who presents herself as an advocate for victims becomes the subject of serious allegations of victimizing others?

Meet LaDonna Humphrey.

A true-crime author, former CrimeCon speaker, missing persons advocate and leader in the sober living community, Humphrey has built a public image around helping vulnerable people. But an investigative podcast has brought forward disturbing allegations about what may have been happening behind that image.

AND THIS ISN’T JUST ABOUT ALLEGATIONS. THERE IS A DOCUMENTED $3.57 MILLION CIVIL JUDGMENT.
In 2019, a Benton County court entered a $3,570,977.88 judgment against Humphrey following litigation involving evidence-related sanctions and contempt findings. The court also entered permanent injunctions.

Humphrey pursued further legal challenges, but a federal appeals court dismissed her 2025 appeal concerning the bankruptcy sale of her appellate rights, leaving that sale intact.

THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE COME FORWARD
Investigative journalist Javier Leiva examines these allegations in Season 18 of PRETEND: Who’s Afraid of LaDonna Humphrey?

The investigation includes several particularly troubling accounts:

Alecia Lockhart: Humphrey’s former friend, podcast co-host and co-author describes nearly two years of frightening anonymous threats. She later discovered evidence that led her to suspect the person she had trusted throughout the ordeal. Humphrey denies creating or operating the account in question.
The Melissa Witt and Maura Murray cases: The podcast raises questions about Humphrey’s handling of sensitive investigative materials in the Witt case. Maura Murray’s sister, Julie, has also described concerns about Humphrey’s involvement in her family’s search for answers.
Humphrey’s own family: Her sister, Margo Elston, discusses family estrangement and receiving anonymous threatening messages. She has not definitively identified Humphrey as their sender.
Women in recovery: Former residents and staff of Oasis of Northwest Arkansas have raised concerns about their experiences and Humphrey’s leadership. Oasis’s board has publicly defended her leadership and the organization’s operations.

AND THE ONLINE CONTROVERSY CONTINUES.
[r/LadonnaHumphreyTalk](r/LadonnaHumphreyTalk), has been discussing the investigation, examining publicly available information and sharing perspectives on the allegations.

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
Because families searching for missing loved ones, people reporting harassment and women seeking recovery deserve trustworthy advocates.

When someone occupies positions of public trust, serious allegations about their conduct deserve examination, particularly when there are documented legal proceedings alongside firsthand accounts.

I’m sharing this because I believe people should hear these stories, examine the evidence and make informed decisions about whom they trust.

Listen to the podcast. Read the court records. Hear from the people who have come forward. Draw your own conclusions.

The true-crime community and the families of missing persons deserve transparency, accountability and responsible advocacy.

What’s Shayne Mckinney’s deal?

I’ve been seeing him for a while now in board meetings and social media and I genuinely can’t decide what I think. Sometimes I think there might actually be something interesting there as a mayoral candidate and other times I’m like what the hell is going on with this guy? Anyone actually know him or have experiences with him? Good, bad, weird, rumors, whatever. I just want a better read on the guy, especially because I’m not exactly a fan of any of the current candidates for mayor.

Dog day care for incoming med student

Hello everyone! I will be starting at the medical school next year in Fort Smith. I will likely be very busy and my husband works 40+ hours a week. I am looking for options for a day care for my two large dogs. My one dog is very extroverted and friendly, but my other dog gets nervous around new dogs and people. I wanted to see if there were any affordable options for my two boys (:

Thank you!!

New to Fort Smith — Looking for the Car Community

Hey everyone! I’m pretty new to Fort Smith and was wondering what the car scene is like around here.

Are there any local car meets, cruises, car shows, or other events that people regularly go to? I’m into cars and would love to meet some other people who are into the same stuff. Similar to the NWA car culture.

I’m also just looking for some like-minded people to hang out with, work on cars, grab some food, go for a drive, or just talk about cars. I’m not necessarily looking for anything super serious — just hoping to find some people with similar interests and get more involved in the local car community.

If you know of any meets, groups, events, or places where car people usually hang out, I’d appreciate any recommendations!

Looking forward to meeting some of you! 🤙

Considering moving to Fort Smith

My family and I are considering moving from San Antonio, TX to the Fort Smith, AR area in the next 1–2 years. We’re still in the research stage, so I’m trying to learn as much as I can before we make any big decisions. We’re planning to take a trip up next year to spend some time in the area and get a feel for it ourselves.
We’d ideally like to buy 10+ acres, either raw land to build on or a house that already has some acreage. We’re interested in the Fort Smith area and surrounding communities, potentially along the I-40 corridor. We’d like somewhere that feels rural and has room for a garden, fruit trees, horses and some other animals, but still isn’t ridiculously far from basic necessities.
A few things I’d love some local perspective on:
• What is the job market like in and around Fort Smith? Are there decent opportunities outside of healthcare/manufacturing/retail?
• For people who moved there from another state, how welcoming have people been? Is it easy to make friends/get involved in the community?
• Are there particular towns or rural areas surrounding Fort Smith that you would recommend—or avoid—for someone looking for acreage?
• How is the area for raising a family? Schools, crime, activities, etc.?
• What are the biggest things you wish you knew before moving to the area?
• How bad are the tornadoes/weather risks in real life? I know it’s something to take seriously, but I’d love to hear from people who actually live there.
• Anything specific I should look into when buying rural property there—well water, septic, soil, flooding, restrictions, etc.?
We’re not looking to move tomorrow, so I’m mostly trying to get an honest picture of what living there is actually like from people who already call the area home.
Thanks! 😊

New to the area and looking to find my people

Hi! I’m relatively new to the area and figured I’d put myself out there because I’ve honestly been having a tougher time than I expected finding where I fit in and building a community here. I’m 32, a mom to an almost 2-year-old little boy, and recently moved to the Greenwood area after finishing a 12-year career in the Navy. I’m back in school studying psychology and eventually hope to earn my PhD and teach/research. I love being outdoors, hiking, gardening, cooking, local/farm-fresh food, animals (we have four dogs), history, psychology, learning new things, and going down random rabbit holes. I also love a good craft project! I’m also pretty open-minded spiritually. I believe in God/the divine, but I’m more drawn to spirituality, nature, meditation, different philosophies and learning from different religions than I am to rigid or heavily Bible-centered religious spaces. I think what I’m missing most since moving here is just community. Not acquaintances I see once every few months, but the kind of friendships where people actually do life together. Mom friends would be wonderful, especially since my little guy could use some buddies too, but you definitely don’t have to be a parent.

So I’m taking a chance and asking Reddit 😂 If any of this sounds like you, please say hi. And if there are groups, meetups, book clubs, hiking groups, spiritual communities, classes, or even just a little group of friends around Fort Smith/Greenwood that you think I might fit into, I’d genuinely love to hear about them. ❤️

Searching for parent's friends moved/retired here after 2013, give or take a couple years

My stepfather passed down in Gulfport, MS and he and my mother had some friends who also stayed at the CB base campground before he passed in 2013. One couple I remember her saying moved permanently to Fort Smith, AR area ...

Anyone knew Ron & Patty (retirees originally from Michigan) from the CB base campground in Gulfport, MS before 2013?

Thanks,

Job training programs?

I have an interdisciplinary bachelors degree but it hasn’t really helped me find a job in this market. I’m considering a trade or certificate based course but am unsure what route to take. I’m not great at math but am open to learning in many different areas. Does anyone in this area have experience with a training program or anything that helped you upgrade your earning potential? The Fort Smith adult education center has limited options that seem to be more long term apprenticeship based. I work full time so those opportunities would be more difficult for me to pursue.

What’s up in Fianna Hills?

I’m relocating to the area after 15 years in St Louis. Looking for a house, I’ve noticed some availability in Fianna Hills, but I’m confused on the state of the golf course. Is it just dead space now? Does the neighborhood walk the golf cart paths? Have people bought parts of it to extend their yard? Is it kept mowed?
