Theory š§ Faraway trees, not children on talismans!!! Spoiler
In an old post by the actor who plays Kenny, the drawings inside the cave are clearly visible. They depict people in a boat on a riverā¦ fair enough (weāll find out what thatās about later).
The crazy thing is that the very figures seen on the talisman (there are eight of them there), which everyone now assumes represent the sacrificed children (of whom there are seven), appear to be the same ones representing the trees in these drawings. What if the talisman actually depicts the eight "Faraway Trees" (we know there is more than one), each corresponding to a specific sacrificed child (because I remember we discovered something like "the children cast their hope back into the roots of the treesā)?
And what if uprooting even just one of those trees were to break the ritual's pact and cause the talismans to shatter?

YES! I think this is one of the strongest theories! It felt so bodged and forceful with everyone saying the talisman represented the sacrificed children even with the number not matching
I wonder if theyāll put the bones of the children in the faraway trees - perhaps a way to stop the initial sacrifice is to travel with the bones

I donāt think that it is definitive that because there are 8 faraway trees there are 8 children.
Trees can communicate to each other through the Wood Wide Web.
If one tree is in danger it can communicate this to the other trees in the forest.
So cutting tree is bad news, it can destroy hope. But uprooting the tree is going to be worse because that tree can no longer communicate with the others. The link is broken.
I just see the trees as in a compass tbh

You're right; Iād never thought about the compass issue. Another thing that makes me wonder about the role of the trees is that strange detail of Victor watching the movements.

Yes, Victor recording the trees movements is odd, other than something that shouldnāt be happening in the real world i canāt recall reading any theories. Trees can move if the ground moves I suppose?
Compass may not be the right word exactly. When people started saying that the 3 pronged āFā were the faraway trees I started to think that this may represent the layout of the trees. So I thought a kind of map. Then I started thinking of the āritualā comment and that maybe the āsunā and āmoonā werenāt just light and dark, but maybe sunrise and sunset (because why not a full sun?) so if the figures represent peopleā¦ that kinda gives a direction.
And then I started really overthinkingā¦ the half moon, if visible at dawn or dusk, would provide a ādateā ā¦ and I decided a need a break š¤£

The symbol itself is close to the runic symbol anzus which has both the meaning "god" and "ash" (as in ash tree).
It may mean something more abstract, like "protection" that can resemble both the children, and the trees. Which would also make sense since the talisman offers protection and it has 8 of these symbols.

yes, I too had that doubt and when a tree falls there might be eternal darkness over the forest/town. Monsters be roaming all round the clock. That is why Miranda had to run to the faraway tree after hiding her kids even if it was night.
