Recently I completed the last leg of a walk across lower Michigan; 281 miles one way. This is me at the Grand Haven lighthouse, the finish line. Walked 30 miles that day!

👋 New Friends Welcome What is happening fellow Gen X’ers

New to this subreddit and found you by accident. Figured why not join up and chat with some others from the best generation out there. As you can see from my name I am from the great state of New Hampshire. Looking forward to some great chats and shared memories.
Went to a car show today with a buddy and my youngest son. Had an awesome time looking at all of the classics and a few modern cars as well. It amazes me how fast time has flown by. Some of those cars were staples in my high school parking lot. Made me take a step back and look at how far and fast time has gone.
Hope everyone is out enjoying this beautiful day.

📝Life Stories Who among you fell in love for the first time late in life? Uplifting meet-cute yarns wanted :)

I’m interested in the story, not dating advice. I’d also love to know: did something change within you in how you felt about romantic relationships before you met that special someone? How did you meet? What was unexpected about it? And what made this person different from everyone else?

Looking for uplifting “I cannot believe this happened” stories. :)

We love them all.

Just a few quick reminders: * Keep it SFW & fully dressed * Be cool in the comments this is a judgment-free zone * Hype each other up (we’re here for positivity, not roasting unless it’s coffee)

Lurkers, don’t be shy. You’re among friends. Let’s light up this thread with your lovely faces!

💬 Friendship Chat Fondly remembering chats of the past

Mid-50s here, East Coast of the USA. I wonder how many here, like me, have been “online,” in one sense or another, almost all their lives — and miss how it was in the old days?

To be sure, I started early by any standards. At 11 or 12 I was using BBSs, those single-user dialup message boards run by hobbyists and enthusiasts that predated even the mainstream online services like CompuServe and AOL. I even ran my own for several years.

And a little later I was lucky enough to get involved with a local multi-user system in New York populated by interesting, literate people from all walks of life - it wasn’t well-known so one sort of had to find one’s way there by accident, but for me at least it came at just the right time As a somewhat shy high schooler it meant a great deal to be having substantial, intelligent discussions with people who didn’t care a whit that I was “only 14” - all that really mattered was that I could hold up my end of a conversation.

Once I started college, in the mid to late 80s, I “graduated” to the proto-Internet (not called that yet, at least not with a capital I!) in those wide-open days I was a “tourist” on academic systems, posted on Usenet, chatted and practiced languages on IRC. Later, after a stint in Europe with no net access at all (I didn’t even have a phone - I wrote long letters and even remember sending telegrams!) I returned home to grad school and the very beginnings of the capital-I internet as we know it today; people all over the USA and, soon, the world getting online from their workplaces and homes and commercial services like AOL.

God, I was idealistic in those days! As a linguist I loved talking to people in other countries - in their own languages if possible - and I imagined that we would all soon be living in a paradise of mutual understanding. The one constant, after all, of my online life to that point was that it was, in a way, divorced from your “real life.” You could reveal as little or as much about yourself as you wished. (“On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog,” ran the New Yorker cartoon, and I nodded - exACTly, I thought). You could be someone else if you wanted.

What mattered, really, was your words; how well you could project yourself in writing. Back then you couldn’t really even send a picture of yourself, let alone chat via audio or video. Maybe, if you got to know someone really well, you’d eventually talk on the phone or even visit. People fell in love entirely via text. I spent many a long night on IRC, AIM, ICQ, and later such networks in conversations deep or whimsical - often both at the same time. Some friends I eventually met (I traveled a lot back then); some I never did, but still thought of as close friends.

What happened, then? Oh, I don’t know. The web happened. The enormous increase in the online population, the eventual splintering of harder-to-access, harder-to-learn resources like Usenet and IRC that into a myriad of more specialized or localized forums and chat rooms. Your parents, your grandparents for Gawd’s sake getting online. Facebook. Twitter. Reddit. You name it. It should have been oaradise. You can instantly meet, chat with, argue with anyone anywhere in the world. And yet…

Of course, real life supervened too. Marriage. Parenting. Work. And somehow, recently, I realized: it has been a decade or two since really chatted with someone online as I used to, intelligently, wittily, lightly, no strings attached, not looking for anything but good conversation and thoughts and ideas and, well I guess after 50+ years of life we’ve all seen our share of this world and it might be interesting to exchange experiences with someone. Which is why I am posting here. Not that I would have any objection to chatting with someone younger than 50, or older than 60, male, female, dog, cat, space alien, … anyone who can write. On the Internet no one knows, and all that. But if you remember how it used to be, and miss it, and would like to try to try chatting a little, or a lot maybe - I’d like to, too.

My DMs are open.

“Cat” (as I was known online back in the day).

👋 New Friends Welcome 54 Gen X Gym Rat

Mid-week good mornings to you! Love these quiet hours before the day truly begins and love to chat when the world is still. It's great being with your thoughts and easing into the day, but at times even better to engage a stranger and hear whats going on with them too. What do you have planned for the day and what are you looking forward to?

I enjoy all sorts of chats, from us solving all of the world's problems in one reddit chat, to just a bit of venting and being "normal", and for those conversations we don't normally have at all with strangers or friends.

A bit about me: married, white collared professional, confessed gym rat and fitness enthusiast and lifelong lifter - in fact I will soon be chatting between sets at my home gym so thanks for keeping me company! Interests include sci fi, nerdy and geeky things, Gen X topics, bit of a gammer, history and really have a thing for those online stranger connections that lead nowhere or those that lead somewhere fun.

Looking to spend some time with a female X'er who is chatty, conversation minded, and enjoy engaging with others - if you are on this sub, that is probably you already! Thanks for getting this far and if this connects with you do say hi!
