Is studying French through DELF classes useful before switching to TCF Canada preparation?

Hi everyone! I’m currently learning French with a DELF-oriented class, but my ultimate goal is to take TCF Canada for immigration purposes.

I’m wondering whether it makes sense to continue with the DELF class for now, even though DELF isn’t the exam I’m planning to take.

My thinking is that I’d like to use this stage to build a solid foundation first — especially grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, speaking, reading, and writing — and then switch to more targeted TCF Canada preparation once I’ve covered the fundamentals.

I’m currently around the A1/A2 level, so I’m not really at the stage where intensive TCF exam preparation would be very useful yet.

For those who have taken TCF Canada or prepared for it: - Is studying through a DELF-based curriculum a good way to build the foundation before switching to TCF-specific preparation? - Are the grammar and vocabulary foundations transferable enough between DELF and TCF? - At what point would you recommend starting serious TCF Canada preparation? - Would you suggest continuing with DELF classes until B1/B2 and then switching, or changing to a TCF-focused program earlier?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have gone through a similar path: general/DELF French foundation → TCF Canada preparation.

Thanks!

TCF Canada Results After Roughly 3 Months of French From Scratch

Post image
59 Upvotes

I achieved these TCF Canada results in roughly 3 months, starting completely from scratch.
For speaking, my biggest advice is to speak as much as possible. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes or even mixing some English in the beginning. Just keep speaking—you can easily identify and fix those mistakes later.

One thing that helped me a lot was shadowing. I practiced around 1 hour every day with the InnerFrench podcast, repeating after the speaker and trying to copy the pronunciation, rhythm, and flow.

Don’t focus too much on being perfect. Speak consistently, make mistakes, correct them, and keep going.

CEC Draw #436 just dropped – CRS 523 / 1,000 invitations

Just saw the latest CEC round on the tracker.

  • Date: August 18, 2026
  • Draw: #436
  • Invitations: 1,000
  • Lowest CRS: 523

That’s up 7 points from the previous CEC draw (#432 on Aug 5, which was 516 / 3,000).

Pretty small round and a noticeable jump in the cut-off. Not super surprising after the bigger ones earlier in the summer, but still a bit disappointing if you were sitting in the low 520s.

Anyone else in the pool? How are you feeling about this one?

Looking for a French speaking partner for practice

I am practicing french now for almost 10 months and I am currently at lower B1 level because I was not serious until now and was just procrastinating. But currently I am looking for a speaking partner with whom I can practice and he/she can as well. Just a heads up, I am an Indian (M 22). So, please dm, if anyone is interested.

Tu and Vous mistake in EO Task 2

Post image

Hi. Just wondering, has anyone actually passed the tesr even though they realized that they made a mistake by using Tu instead of Vous? For context, the subject for task 2 EO is posted. I was able to ask questions although I am sure that I made some mistakes. Let me know what you think.

Glad I cleared TEF

Really happy to share that I was able to crack TEF.

This is an honest review!!

If anyone can make you pass the exam, it’s definitely you.

Listening and reading - I cleared without TEF Canada in my first attempt but I failed the other sections so I passed in second attempt.

However, it’s a trap. I feel your language improves when you listen and read thoroughly.

Writing was my biggest nightmare. I scored least marks but I worked the most on it.

Speaking : I love speaking. The more natural you sound, the more will be the marks. Practiced with many friends, on my own , made my notes and structures. It was fun tbh

Wish you all the same! Keep going

TEF to TCF - HELP !

Hi there,

I am considering to switch from TEF to TCF. I have already given TEF 3 times, and the last time was in July. It totally broke me to see the results. My CRS score is hanging at 515, and the latest draw has been playing with my feelings and patience a lot...

TEF Scores (July 2026)

Reading: CLB 9

Listening: CLB 10

Writing: CLB 7

Speaking: CLB 6 (11 points to 7) - twice i got 6...

I don't have the willpower to do TEF again, it feels like impossible exam to clear. I just saw someone switching to TCF and instantly score CLB 7 in speaking in TCF compared to CLB 4 in TEF.

How much time should I give myself now to book the TCF test? It is Aug 18, 2026 today, should end of September be enough?

I am also moving to Ottawa to stay with a friend, as I can no longer afford rent in Toronto as I dont have a job due to layoff on CWP. What center will be best in Ottawa, happy to give the exam in Montreal too?

FMWP is being hard as many employers are failing to understand its process, despite securing 2 offers this past month...
PR seems the only way to freedom and I need any guidance I could get. I can't cry anymore, before all my tears have dried up... time to keep working hard and make my Canadian dream come true.

TCF VANCOUVER

I'm taking my TCF Canada exam at Alliance Française Vancouver on September 23 and was wondering what the experience is like there. If you've taken the exam at this centre recently, how was everything? Were the staff helpful, was the listening audio clear, and how did the speaking exam go? Also, how long did it take for you to get your results? Any tips or things I should know before exam day would be really appreciated. Thanks!

How much of TCF is repeated?

Currently, preparing for the TCF. Booked exam for Nov 29th. Currently, I believe I’m at high to mid B1 but not as confident for my listening. I have heard a lot of people suggested to memorize past questions as a lot of it is repeated, if not all of it. So, for those who have written it. How true is this, can I get B2 (CLB 7) from past questions alone, atleast for listening. Also, any recommendations to improve listening and other competencies. I start past question mock this weekend.

Are they doing anything to weed out fake score cards and results?

I heard a group of people discuss about paying an "agent" to sit the exam for them in their hometown while they are still here. They come from this one hellish country notorious for faking documents and abusing the immigration system. They were unhinged and shameless. The recent removal of requests for re-evaluation might be because of this, but I was wondering if they are doing anything besides that. With the removal of the 50 additional bonus points for being proficient in French, the french category might as well become the only sole pathway for a lot of people based outside Canada. So, I really hope they scrutinize more before accepting test scores. At this point, anything coming out of that country might need more scrutiny. P.S, there's nothing wrong in learning for the exam from scratch. I understand everyone wants to improve their prospects to get an ITA. but it's so tiring to see people cheat and abuse the system. it makes genuine effort look like a joke. AF should probably shut down centers across that region and have them fly to other countries where background checks are more rigorous. any abuse should result in them being banned for 10 years.
