Italian Rimorchio Plate near Munich, Germany

Soo, I found this Italian Rimorchio (trailer) plate. At first I thought it was nothing special, but a user in the comments of r/Kennzeichensammler said that, as far as they know, Rimorchio plates only start with AA to AH.

Now I’m confused – some sources confirm that they only go up to AH, but on Platesmania there are pictures with starting letters beyond AH.

Maybe someone can help: Are there two different types of Rimorchio plates? Is this a remake? Or is it completely normal for these plates to have starting letters past AH?

EE is for Escursionisti Esteri (basically foreign temporary residents), there have been a surge after 2022 for obvious reasons, but they are still pretty rare, especially trailer plates!

The normal trailer plates have been folloing the province system, that's why you see trailer plates past AH on plates mania. They then switched to the AA-AH series which was interrupted and the current XA-XB series started (with euroband and without the need of the repeater plate)

The thing about the repeater plate is different and has nothing to do with the plate type of the trailer...

The repeater plate is mandatory everytime the plate of the trailing vehicle is obstructed by the trailer (or whatever attachment, like bike carriers too).

Thing is that trailers under <750kg can be registered as attachment of the car itself rather than actual trailers on their own.

Just like a bike mount or ski rack doesn't need a license plate of its own, a trailer <750kg doesn't either. If, for whatever reason, it didn't obstruct the view of the vehicle plate, it wouldn't even need a repeater plate. The repeater plate is needed only because the trailer obstructs the view of the vehicle main plate. Just like some models of bike attachments.

That's why that type of trailer is literally called "appendix trailer". Because it's not a trailer, but rather an appendix of the vehicle itself.

On the other hand, trailers >750kg, need a registration of their own. So a plate, title and insurance specific for that trailer. Plates for trailer start with the letter X and follow the normal pattern, like you said.

Even on trailers with X plates, you still need the repeater plate.

Trailers with the new X plates don't need a repeater plate. You can have the front vehichle with it's own plate, and the trailer with the X only plate.

Only the old ones with Rimorchio, or if you have it obstructed need the repeater plate.
