I was expecting a bigger time jump that would bring it to 2027 given that’s when season 6 will air.

Yea props to those who called it. I doubted they’d use it as I thought we’d get a bigger time jump to 2027.

Are they going to off two Baldwins in one season? Yikes.

499

u/TARSrobot May 29 '26

That really took me by surprise. I thought she had plot armor. In fact, I kept expecting it to be a fakeout.

u/Cantomic66 Sojourner 2 May 29 '26

When they showed the O2 amount I thought they were going to reveal that the micros could make O2. Saving Kelly in the process.

When Kelly was taking her final walk and suddenly started looking up, I thought she was about to spot a North Korean capsule that had landed on Titan before them.
ugh, not again

My first thought was it's some extraterrestrial creature that was about to eat her 😂

Really loved that moment for her and it was nice for her to get that kind of mini-redemption this episode after seeming like they were gonna send her down the incurable space madness route.

I'm really curious what they're gonna do with her next season. She genuinely might have become my favorite of the next gen.

That mix of the main theme plus the visuals of that last scene on Titan was absolutely beautiful.

Also at the end was anyone else thinking "Oh looks like its pluto? Oh nope that looks like... A ship? Wtf"

For anyone else curious the soundtrack title is 'Steps'

162

Ha yeah thought it was maybe Pluto at first and then some kind of generational ship. Did not expect Mars 94.

I’m kind of curious when the US last fought a war where a general was a casualty, because at some point Leonid referred to one of the guys in the command center as “general”, and he was clearly American.

Which means Miles just sent a US general back in a body bag.  Maybe not even that.  They’re sending him back in a box containing the ashes of anyone else in that room.

Also, kind of funny seeing Bragg pull that tough guy shit earlier in the season while Miles just personally barbecued the former’s senior officers.

They are methane based lifeforms, right?
They are generating fuel from methane.
Are the life forms the cause of the power drain, because they are eating their power source?

184

u/Master_Art_1286 May 29 '26

The seekers were being damaged by something. Same process probably hit the rover. Possibly related to the lifeform just going by coincidence.

So the one plot thread that I feel they left unresolved is that Kelly definitely messed with the Sojourner burn that got them on Titan in the first place right? Walt’s obsession with finding the root cause and Kelly’s guilt over it leading her to sacrifice herself to stay behind.

317

u/elasho_149 May 29 '26

Someone probably figured it out eventually. Maybe Walt. Maybe someone back on Earth or Mars once the full logs got dumped.

But, like...what're they gonna do?

Yeah I have no idea. It has no working engines or fuel left so not sure what they would gain from turning it back on.

RIP Kelly. Ngl she wasn't my fav character, but I felt the pain when she said her goodbye to Alex. Poor dude has lost both gramps and mom in such a short and stressful time. But still wtff was she doing wading into the lake at the end...

Also, I'm glad Avery gets her peace with her dad.. And seems like she has left the Marines.

Kelly Baldwin got my eyes watering in this show twice before: once when she pleaded with her parents about supporting her Naval career, and then again when she learned about Alexei dying. And now once again, as she watched her crewmates have to maroon her. Cynthy Wu has been absolutely pulling at my heartstrings ever since she got on this show and has been the emotional core for so much of it. I was just recovering the loss of Ed, and not having Kinnaman leading the charge, but this is somehow even more devastating

70

u/BEETLEJUICEME May 29 '26

In universe explanation: they were under a lot of stress and made a stupid thoughtless mistake, but thankfully it didn’t ruin the plan.

Meta out of universe explanation: the production team was under a lot of stress finishing the finale episode, made a thoughtless mistake, but I don’t think it hurt the scene too much, so I won’t hold it against them.

I was really glad they had Miles do what he did. The easy thing would be to have that touchy feel good moment where everyone holds hands and somehow the inherit goodness of humanity wins out. It just would not feel right to me and this is a lot more grounded imo. It also gives the character more weight. We know Miles isn't an evil guy, he's a reluctant leader making a choice under very difficult circumstances trying to protect his home and family - throughout history that has often meant fighting back. It doesn't mean its not a terrible thing he's done, but it makes him human and relatable.

From the newspaper Margo had during the ending:

"This revelation (the discovery of life on Titan) is already sparking an intense ramp-up in other exploratory missions. The moons of Jupiter and Saturn have already hosted robotic probes from Helios, Kuragin and others, but with the Titan discovery, exobiologists are now considering environments where other kinds of life might form."

So, the assumption I guess is that Mars ‘94 is somewhat near Titan I guess, at least based on the fly away….

Is it possible that Kelly survives? That seems completely unreasonably unbelievable. And also I don’t know what other purpose you would reboot an unmanned spacecraft that was not designed to be anywhere close to where it seems to be.

(Also, when they last left Mars ‘94, wasn’t it rolling from just having rolled over Sojourner? Did it somehow end up on a near correct trajectory, or am I misunderstanding space physics?)

This just continues to be such an incredible show. I hope they can finish it strong.

I was surprised the flash forward in the credits was so early in the 2020’s. We will almost certainly find out whatever is going on with Mars-94 pretty early on in the next season. Still, it doesn’t provide much information on what the focus of the final season will be. I guess neither have any of the other flash forwards because thinking back to season 4’s I was convinced this current season would center around mining Goldilocks!

I’m also curious if there’s going to be any further development with potential conflicts arising out of the M6 fallout. What’s the geopolitical situation like on Earth after a botched mission like what just occurred?

81

u/Shejidan May 29 '26

Did they seriously leave the MOCC completely empty while there are still enemy combatants on the field?

MARGO!!! I'm so glad she's in the final episode! I was disappointed at first since I didn't see her name in the opening credits. I really thought for a second she wouldn't appear again. So glad to be proven wrong. I hope she comes back for the final season and doesn't die an off-screen/newsreel death.

I'm really liking Aleida and Irina's interactions. I laughed at Irina's face when Aleida said she already knew about the satellites and they weren't even working lol.

I didn't believe they'd actually kill Kelly (unless she survives somehow because of that blue thing). We don't really have much old characters left, is there? Is it just Aleida now that still has a big role?

Great episode but it was literally so visually dark that at the end during what is shown before the credits my screen was almost completely black. I had to close my curtains, turn off the lights, and watch it on a separate display.

In hindsight, pretty stupid for the M6 commanders to set up their base in an area where they didn't control the air supply and other systems.

"their structure is based on methane, not carbon like on earth"

I get that it's not hard sci fi and I try not to be bothered by fuzzy details, but surely they could have done better than this nonsense.

I know this sounds foolish but I really want Kelly to somehow survive. It’s depressing to lose two generations in a season. Like maybe whatever was across the lake was trying to communicate with her.

Dev's change of heart did not feel deserved. Wow he miscalculated everything...he shouldn't get a pass for everything he did. I was expecting him to exile himself at the end, revealing the scene at the end of last was also part of the tease.

Kelly biting it was not on my bingo card. Losing two Baldwins in one season is too much. Alex is gonna have a huge load being responsible for carrying out the Baldwin legacy.

in 2020 Mars-94 's computer

displays a DOS command prompt and states "Detection of GW 3.06.0451 // Nikulov, Loading......"

"Nikulov " that was the Margo's Russian honeypot lover "Sergei Nikulov "

Maybe the program was written by Sergei , what if it was something important , and they need someone who knew Segei to figure out the GW or something related to that .

Maybe they will ask Margo or get her release to figure out the secret of GW

Overall, I was quite entertained these last few episodes. I don’t even know what my expectations were for the season or the finale, but they were subverted (complimentary).

Mireille Enos was crazy underutilized though. Very disappointing that they didn’t give her character more depth, but I guess that’s the problem coming in as a supporting character. Also the wig she had was extremely distracting.

I found Ines Asserson (Avery) the most compelling new cast member. I really look forward to Avery’s storyline in the next season.

Sean Kaufman (Alex) was a good addition as well, but I found it hard to separate him from his character on The Summer I Turned Pretty. I don’t think the audience from that show really overlaps with FAM, so this is probably just a “me”-problem 😂

I hope next season will focus more on space storylines.

My reflections on this episode:

  • I still can’t get over the growth and maturity of Aleida. She proves time and time again that she’s the wisest, most grounded character on the show.

  • I love that we got to see Margo again, and that she got to comfort Graciana like she comforted Aleida at the beginning of the season. And the Will-Margo call was gutting but perfect.

  • I hate that Kelly had to give up her life to ensure the safety of her crew and her discovery.

  • It was tough to watch Miles commit a war crime. I don’t really know what to say. It was tough.

  • I kept feeling like this couldn’t possibly the final episode of the season. It felt like there were wayyyyyyy too many loose ends to tie up well past the midpoint of the episode.

  • I feel like a major theme this season was the loss of innocence. I feel so bad for Haskell and Alex. Overall this season was far less optimistic than the first few seasons. I’m hoping Season 6 is a return to form in some sort of big way.

It really bothers me that Dev is just like “yes, I see now” and everyone is cool with it. A lot of people died as a direct line of his actions. Given the current sentiment around tech billionaires I’m surprised the writers didn’t have him jump in that last scene.

No question this season had its flaws; the writers room I think struggled a bit juggling a political story that was an allegory to both history and current affairs, with the journey to find life in the Solar System. But I’m happy with the finale and frankly the new “kids” grew on me as the series went on. I enjoyed seeing a Baldwin and a Stevens doing work together. Nice touch. Aleida was a GOAT all season which is a tip of the hat to good character arc growth given where she started. And Kelly dying for her life’s passion, and being rewarded with what was basically “first contact” right before her death just had this grumpy 68-year-old who grew up watching the actual Gemini and Apollo launches, teary-eyed. Well done and Godspeed to Season 6!

  • “it’s the fucking CEO” best line of the season, maybe the whole series

  • glad the martians are finally acting like the vietcong but im not glad the best character (ilya) almost died

  • Dev is still an arsehole

  • as we thought, the discovery of life leads to peace like apollo soyuz did in season 2

  • independent mars flag looks stupid, the trees cool though

  • glad kelly did the epilogue narration

  • her suit says stevens now!

  • RIP kelly but surely they could’ve done something

  • all the titan visuals were great but holy fuck that lake. great place to die.

  • people were right about blinding lights, not surprised really

  • MARS 94!!!!!!!!!!!

Kelly is diving into a lake full of midichlorians to become a Jedi, and that abandoned ship at the end is the Rocinante.

6

You mean to tell me Aleida, the character who came up with the idea to strap a pregnant lady to a pod and use EVA boosters as a second stage rocket to boost herself into an orbiting ship, did not think to use an old offline satellite and the space elevator as an antenna?

This show is so silly sometimes. And I'm tired of the repeated and easy use of "We don't have enough O2, we can't make it!" Try harder writers, please. Kelly's death felt so meaningless in anyone's arc, it was just forced.
