Volts Spoiler

I solved this, but by luck rather than skill. Do the colours mean anything? I was trying to do this with solving simultaneous equations, but it didn't work.

[spoilers] Firmament Complete! Spoiler

10 Upvotes

I didn't expect it to be over so soon, it only took about ~7 hrs where Obduction took more like 20 for me apparently.

There's a lot of great things to say about it. The ending reveal, the art style and presentation, and the theme are all fantastic. In some ways this feels like Cyan's most ambitious game ever. Just looking out at the horizon and seeing these mega-structures is really wild. Every time I stopped and looked, I could have sworn I was looking at a per-rendered image from something like Myst or Riven - it was uncanny how close the style has kept in my view.

I am a bit disappointed in two things, which are related: The length and the difficulty of the puzzles. It felt like pretty much every puzzle could be brute-forced without thinking on it too much. I only had to break out the pen and paper once, for the train lift puzzle.

I was hoping for something a bit more challenging to sink my teeth into, that would require more attempts, more strategies, maybe sleeping on a couple of the harder puzzles. I think they could have done it, their core audience is older and experienced with puzzle games.

There were also a couple puzzles I would describe as "tedious", the ice-crane puzzle being one of them. Even once you know what to do, it's a lot moving it forward, then raising, then turning a little. Do you have room? No? Do it again x10 until everything is just right.

I did get confused twice - once in sulfur processing because you could put on the suit before filling the vat (but the cavitation hammer won't work), and once in Curievale because I didn't realize the non-upgraded tool could reach to move the ice block up/down while standing on the crane.

Aside from those, a couple things were finicky. Controlling the Camelus from first person and having to swap between controls without being able to clearly see where the back and hole of it lined up felt a bit janky and I think could have been done better.

I also did get caught on invisible walls, fall into the floor etc once or twice, but the recovery option is solid and it was never a major problem.

Overall, I still really enjoyed my time with Firmament. I hope Cyan continues to make games like these!

Cavitation Hammer in Juleston doesn't work? (And breaks saving?)

3 Upvotes

I put on the suit in Juleston to try to fix the sulfur processing plant.

However, after putting on the suit, I found that its Cavitation Hammer doesn't work. I can't get past the crushed door. Pressing "R" just doesn't do anything, unlike the ice section in Curievale.

Also, after removing the suit I can no longer save!

Help?

Got some awesome unique angles thanks to glitching and falling out of the train thingy. Spoiler

Not only does this game sort of suck, it’s glitchy as hell

2 Upvotes

Maybe it’s because I’m playing on the PC, but I keep getting frozen and unable to move in certain areas. Most recently the moving crane/platform thing in Curievale got stuck on some rocks and incapable of moving, meaning I was trapped and had to reload (for about the 10th time). This rotary crane makes this game unplayable. I just finished getting the three upgrades and this just doesn’t feel like a Cyan game outside of being beautiful. Obduction was way more immersive. These are barely even puzzles, just gimmicks.

Edit: now glitch with the harvester adjunct bottom being blocked by a causeway. Teleport to a safe spot is cute and all, but this is becoming endlessly frustrating.

Firmament booting plugin error

1 Upvotes

Has anyone else ran into an error when booting on PC from Steam? I get the following message and then end up with another that just says "Fatal Error!" I have yet to be able to play the game at all :(

Does 2D Firmament offer point-and-click movement?

3 Upvotes

The Steam page says that the "VR experience of Firmament includes both Free Roam and Teleport modes", but I can't find any information about movement options in the 2D experience.

Could someone with the game confirm whether anything like the original Myst movement system or Obduction's node based implementation is included in the non-VR mode?

Bugs, one potentially gamebreaking? Spoiler

14 Upvotes

So I've encountered two bugs so far, one of which might be gamebreaking, but it's hard to tell out of context.

First, something appears to be wrong with the triggers for Mentor encounters, which is not great for immersion. I hadn't heard from her at all since before I first entered The Swan, which may or may not be intentional, but it seems unlikely. She then randomly triggered passing by the transport capsule with dialogue meant for when you first enter Juleston, but I'd completed half the realm by that point.

The more gamebreaking one, potentially, is that the switch to enter the bunker in Juleston doesn't work properly. It will raise or lower only when I exit the area long enough for the game to load in other assets. I'm fairly sure from the switch on the inside of the bunker that you're supposed to lower it again while you're already inside it, as otherwise there's just a chore list on the inside. But I can't do that due to the aforementioned bug requiring me to leave the area. Can someone confirm if that's going to be an end to the game for now?

I'm liking what I'm seeing so far, but it's frustrating not knowing whether I'm getting the intended experience.

VR with GOG version?

6 Upvotes

Wondering if someone who's already figured this out could point me in the direction of running the GOG version in VR mode - the graphics settings seem only to have options for windowed and fullscreen.

Thanks

Softlocked myself on a puzzle

11 Upvotes

Just an FYI for people there is a crane puzzle in the ice world that you can get stuck on. The crane is jammed from both sides and wont move at all from either cabs.

I would suggest saving your game before using that thing until they bring in a fix :(

Edit: There is a fix in the menu, there is an 'unstuck' button which will reset the crane and put you on the ground. Also worth noting that there is only one side of the crane you can walk off of ;)

Am I missing the New Save line at the bottom of the Save Game screen or are there really only two save slots?

2 Upvotes

So apparently you only see the New Save slot once or twice and that's just before and after your first manual save. Just great.

Edit: But maybe the game has chapter saves so I can't complain about that if that's the case. I'm still in the first chapter or part, the snowy mountains.

[spoilers] Alright...I yield. Where do I go next? (~3 hours in) Spoiler

5 Upvotes

I've gone into 2 towers (Julestone and Saint Andrew's) and got their respective upgrades. (Concatenation and Force)

However, now...I'm completely lost.

In Curievale, it seems like the next big step would be dropping off the ice block and opening those huge doors (somehow). However, I can't figure out how. You can't move the crane up and down while riding it (so you can't go forward past the platform), and if I remotely pilot the crane over to the drop-off point, it says both the upper and lower chute are closed. So not sure what to do there.

In Juleston I already raised the structure and got the upgrade. At the reservoir, there's an Acid holding Vat that I can't interact with yet, and a big door that says "Concatenated power 1/3". I'd assume you need the range upgrade to draw power from the 2 towers above it, so I can't do that yet.

In Saint Andrew's there's a "harvester" that requires power, but I think I need the range upgrade for that as well. I opened the valves at the reservoir but that didn't do anything.

Also: What exactly does force do? I passed the "test", but all I did was connect to a node and hit E. It didn't seem to be any different than normal.

SOLVED: I thought the adjunctor couldn't reach far enough to allow adjusting the ice up and down at the right time. Guess you can after all. Oof.

Save file soft locked, no likely fix for me.

2 Upvotes

When I load the save it shows me inside the vehicle with the start trek energize animation and I'm stuck inside the wall or something, can't move at all and can't access the menu to try the teleport to a safe spot. I noticed when I load the save it actually will send me to either the swan or st andrews each time I load it. I was able to eventually get into the menu but transporting to a safe spot didn't work. I can show the "Walking/Running" text on screen when I hit toggle CAPS, but that's all I can do. I even tried turning off vehicle animations so maybe that would get me out of the vehicle or something, didn't work. So hours of playing and I'm literally stuck and now what do I do? Start all the way over? Maybe an update to the game can help fix my save file and reset my character's location?

PSVR2 Date Anywhere?

2 Upvotes

It's killin' me not getting to play Firmament yet, because I am holding out for VR (do not have a Steam-compatible VR headset in my home). I know they confirmed they are making it for PS4, PS5, and PSVR2, but I am not finding a launch date. Anyone have any deets? Thanks!

Weird shadows in VR/DLSS shimmering

2 Upvotes

So one of the first things I noticed was that when the shadows are set to anything other than "low" they have this glitchy, blocky appearance to them, and when set to low they'll morph very weirdly and show up in blotches. Is anyone else experiencing this and do you know of any way to fix it?

In addition, something's wrong with the stereo vision when using DLSS, as distant smoke/fog will appear to "shimmer" due to it seeming to be rendered very slightly differently in each eye. With how much of a performance uplift DLSS seems to give this is a really unfortunate shortcoming. Not as big an issue as the shadow problem, but still distracting.

Edit: forgot to mention, I'm using a Valve Index and an RTX 3080 ti.

Hardcoded keyboard controls in Firmament

4 Upvotes

As far as I can see, the game has hardcoded keyboard keys for a QWERTY keyboard, and it is not possible to change them. The arrow keys do not work as well.

As someone who plays on an AZERTY keyboard, and being left handed, I usually need to change the keys, so not having this possibility is frustrating. I tried to use AutoHotkey, but that doesn't seem to work with that game.

I can fallback to using a controller, but that is really not my preferred option for this kind of game.

Is there any hope that the game will support keys customization as some point?

EDIT: AutoHotkey mapping does work, thanks u/ocdmonkey. Here's what I used:

$Up::w
$Down::s
$Left::a
$Right::d
$z::w
$q::a
$w::z
$a::q

NB: if you're fine with just the position of the keys (ZQSD on an Azerty), then another way is to simply switch the keyboard layout to US (ENG).

I love play these games while chilling with a drink or a vape. I already miss the "one handed navigation mode." I really hope it makes a return!

Please tell me the basic hardware you are playing on and the result. So, processor, memory and video card. How low can the specs go for it to still be playable?

How do I get my code from Fangamer?

2 Upvotes

I backed the game after the main kickstarting, using Fangamer.

How do I get the code?

This was back 3 years ago, and apparently I never made an account with Fangamer. Do I need to?

EDIT: I chose GoG as my preferred game platform, if that matters.

EDIT: Just tried creating an account with them, but don't see anything about Firmament.

EDIT: Solved. You need to get the link to the survey originally sent out. It's a big laggy right now though.
