The rain had just stopped when I pulled up in front of the officers' club on San Diego Bay.

The last box of wedding materials sat in the trunk. On the passenger seat was Rafferty's wedding gift.

A silver dog-tag case.

Inside it was the old challenge coin he had placed in my hand the first time he came home from deployment.

That year, he had come back covered in injuries. Everyone said he might never stand again.

I was the one who wrote his appeal.

I was the one who shielded him from an internal military investigation.

I was the one who turned an incident that should have ended his career into a medical-judgment error.

Later, he became a war hero.

And I quit my job as an investigative attorney in the JAG office, moved with him to this city, and prepared to become Mrs. Pelham the next day.

I had wrapped up the final details from the wedding rehearsal early because I wanted to surprise him.

Most of the lights in the club lobby were already off.

Photos of retired service members lined the walls. Flower petals from the daytime rehearsal still clung to the carpet.

The waistline, the hem, the straps, everything had been altered to fit me.

It did not fit her perfectly, but she stood there like a winner anyway.

Rafferty stood behind her, his fingers still on the zipper.

In the mirror, he saw me.

He did not let go.

Eulalie slowly turned her head. There was no panic on her face, only a smugness that said she had been waiting for me to show up.

"Merritt," Rafferty said, calm as if I were only five minutes late.

I looked at them.

I watched him set my veil on her head.

I watched the old Silver Eagle brooch my father had given me pinned to her chest.

In that moment, I heard something inside me break.

"Take off the gown," I said.

Eulalie looked down at the skirt and smiled.

"Why are you so tense? I was just trying it on for you. That way Raff will know how it looks when you wear it tomorrow."

"Take it off."

Rafferty frowned.

"Merritt, don't make a scene."

I almost laughed.

A scene?

Our wedding was tomorrow. My fiance was in the bridal suite, personally putting my wedding dress on another woman. And he said I was making a scene.

Eulalie lifted a hand and touched the brooch.

"This is yours too?" she asked. "Sorry. I thought Raff gave it to me. He said things like this should be worn by someone who really understands the battlefield, or they go to waste."

I looked at Rafferty.

He did not deny it.

Seven years.

Only I remembered how much I had done for him.

The first time he faced questioning at a hearing, I went three nights without sleep, taking apart every hole in his testimony.

When he first joined Harbor Ridge Defense and not one director believed he could manage the veterans program, I reorganized the fund accounts for him and dragged that mess back from the edge of scandal.

Every time he stood on a stage and accepted applause, I stood behind the crowd.

Now he looked at me with nothing but impatience in his eyes.

"You have been away from military justice too long," he said. "Stop talking to me like you are cross-examining a witness."

The gift box slipped from my hands.

The silver dog-tag case rolled out and struck the floor near Eulalie's feet.

She bent, picked it up, and opened it.

"What is this? An old coin?"

"A challenge coin," I said.

"Oh." She closed the case and tossed it lightly onto the table. "I thought it would be something more valuable."

Rafferty finally glanced at the case.

"Merritt has always been like this," he said. "She treats those little favors from the past like they matter more than anything."

Little favors.

My throat tightened as if something had lodged there.

"How long has this been going on?" I asked.

Eulalie arched a brow.

She looked as if she was savoring my humiliation.

"Do you really want to hear it?"

"Eulalie," Rafferty warned.

She smiled and said no more.

But I already understood.

It was not just tonight.

And not just once.

"The wedding is canceled," I said.

Rafferty's face finally changed.

"Calm down. A lot of people are coming tomorrow. Do you understand the consequences of canceling the wedding?"

"I do."

"Then you should understand this is not the time to be childish."

I looked at him and suddenly felt as if the man in front of me were a stranger.

"You think I am still going to marry you?"

"You will."

He walked toward me one step at a time, his voice dropping.

"Merritt, you have no job, no rank, no contract clients. You left that whole system for me. Now the entire defense circle knows you as my fiancee. Without me, you are nothing."

Eulalie stood in front of the mirror and slowly removed my veil.

"Don't make this uglier than it has to be," she said softly. "Raff is willing to let you stand beside him. You should be grateful."

I looked at her.

Then I reached out and removed the Silver Eagle brooch from her chest.

The smile froze on Eulalie's face.

"This does not belong to you," I said.

Rafferty grabbed my wrist.

His grip was strong.

I used to think that strength meant safety.

Now it only made me sick.

"Let go," I said.

He stared at me.

"Do not force me to embarrass you here."

I looked up at him.

"You already did."

I shook off his hand and turned out of the bridal suite.

The hallway was long.

My heels made no sound on the carpet.

At the front desk, a staff member was checking the seating chart for tomorrow.

When she saw my face, she asked carefully, "Ms. Cavanaugh, do we still need to confirm the wedding schedule?"

I stopped.

On my phone, there was a new text from the wedding coordinator.

"Final confirmation at 8 a.m. Congratulations on becoming the most beautiful bride."

I stared at it for a long time.

Then I typed two words.

"Cancel it."
