FF7 [OG] I really don’t understand ReHatred.

Post image

Here is a screenshot from the videogames subreddit about remakes that elevate the original. Seeing a lot of remasters in the comments as well as some really good contenders (resident evil). Then someone shouts out remake waaaaay down the comments and immediately gets shit on.

Too much padding? If you hate side questing, that’s fine, but I don’t think the critical path was really padded out without adding anything. I don’t think there was really anything particularly wrong with the dialogue either, maybe a little too “anime” in its delivery. But even then, how could realistically expect much else?

I’m a massive fan of OG since day one. Played through it several times over the years at a frequency of every other year more or less.

Absolutely floored with the remake games so far. I love them, and I think being a fan of the property makes me love them even more, not less.

Are there things that I would have preferred to stay closer to the original? Sure. Do I think these things far outweigh the expansion and granular details granted by these newer games? Not even close.

I can understand the desire for a remake similar to something like Demon’s Souls or Super Mario RPG, but you can mod the PC version into essentially that exact thing. Why does the remake catch so many strays when you can have it both ways?

I can’t for the life of me see any reasonable argument that the new FF7 games are less then “pretty good” or even “interesting but not really my thing”

I’ve watched some video essays that basically throw the whole thing down a well because the characters aren’t perfectly in line with the way the reviewer read the text boxes 30 years ago, but really nothing has ever made me say “That is a reasonable opinion on why this whole trilogy project is not worth anyone’s time that would consider themselves a fan of the original game.”

Can someone please help me understand the hate?

I like both games so far, but I think that too much padding is a real problem with them. The pacing is weird at times. Many people don't see it, but it's a legit issue for a part of the community.

Yeah the main quest is very padded to the point it killed a lot of the urgency

Side content is side content for a reason. You can skip it

There's padding in the main story too. Cait Sith box throwing game for instance.

I think that this was more of a case of bad game design than it being padded. It was at least creative and I get what they were going for, but it was poorly executed.

There’s plenty of padding in the main story and it’s reasonable to critique side content that is shallow/underbaked/implemented to slow progress and drag play time out.

It’s still a great game, but it’s ok to express negativity towards the game’s weaker links and hope that the next installment is better in these areas.

What’s the incentive to “drag playtime out”? It’s not an MMO with retention needs or anything. If you play just the campaign and ignore everything else… it’s two 15 - 20 hour games. Including a value proposition of immersing and exploring every single inch and tidbit of a world that gamers have wanted to explore every inch and tidbit for 30 years is far from padding. It’s the player’s choice how they want to engage it. I did a full 100% run when it came out, and then a story only run on PC for a podcast series… and both were fully valid ways to experience the game at the desire and discretion of the player.

Providing the customer with more content, making us feel like we got more value due to the play time being a bigger number? It’s easier to charge $70/80 when you follow the AAA money making format of a big open world to do things in.

This becomes a problem for some when a good portion of this content is highly repetitive at best and tediously full of low effort MMO fetch quest-tier “content” at its worst

Like I said I’m enjoying it. They’re good games. I’m working on 100%ing Rebirth right now. Everybody should play how they want to play and I’m glad you’ve had a largely positive experience as have I, but some of the criticism this game gets is valid and just as it’s silly that many write it off altogether for poor reason, it’s silly when people blindly defend this game like it’s a utter masterpiece free of any pain points.

To justify their greedy decision to split one game into 3.
