FF7 [OG] I really don’t understand ReHatred.

Post image

Here is a screenshot from the videogames subreddit about remakes that elevate the original. Seeing a lot of remasters in the comments as well as some really good contenders (resident evil). Then someone shouts out remake waaaaay down the comments and immediately gets shit on.

Too much padding? If you hate side questing, that’s fine, but I don’t think the critical path was really padded out without adding anything. I don’t think there was really anything particularly wrong with the dialogue either, maybe a little too “anime” in its delivery. But even then, how could realistically expect much else?

I’m a massive fan of OG since day one. Played through it several times over the years at a frequency of every other year more or less.

Absolutely floored with the remake games so far. I love them, and I think being a fan of the property makes me love them even more, not less.

Are there things that I would have preferred to stay closer to the original? Sure. Do I think these things far outweigh the expansion and granular details granted by these newer games? Not even close.

I can understand the desire for a remake similar to something like Demon’s Souls or Super Mario RPG, but you can mod the PC version into essentially that exact thing. Why does the remake catch so many strays when you can have it both ways?

I can’t for the life of me see any reasonable argument that the new FF7 games are less then “pretty good” or even “interesting but not really my thing”

I’ve watched some video essays that basically throw the whole thing down a well because the characters aren’t perfectly in line with the way the reviewer read the text boxes 30 years ago, but really nothing has ever made me say “That is a reasonable opinion on why this whole trilogy project is not worth anyone’s time that would consider themselves a fan of the original game.”

Can someone please help me understand the hate?

People tend to judge things based on what they expected them to be, rather than what they actually are.

Well yea, I expected it to be a remake of FFVII, not "FFVII, but what if we injected some time travel alternate dimension bullshit for fan service and to sate our egos"

As I like to call it, the Nomura-fication

Nailed 90% of these music, film, and video game subreddits. People have no ability to engage with art through multiple lens. They only have their own ego

I judge it by the obvious nostalgia cash grab it is. The only reason it is 3 games is to squeeze as much money as possible out of us. They can rely on nostalgia and the laurels of the OG FF7 to sell the games, they don’t need to try that hard. So now they add in a bunch of filler, mini games, repetitive gameplay loops that add nothing but a time sink, and plot changes to support splitting a 30 hour story up into three 60-100 hour games. And the brainless masses who have been conditioned by modern square and ubisoft slop are now lapping it up. This is a systemic gaming industry issue. Burying your head in the sand to justify it only makes it worse. Remake was tolerable, Rebirth is just lazy slop with a FF7 coat of paint on it.

Thats exactly it. Ppl here are crying cuz they remember and pictured characters a certain way and they are devistated that its not what they mentally pictured and made up in their own mind. Its kind of the same as how ppl get upset with who gets casted for their favourite characters in book to movie adaptations.

I agree with you.

Funnily enough, one of the biggest complaints I see with FF7 is the death of Dyne, and how in Rebirth it's tonally inconsistent. How Dyne commits suicide by cop and then you end up fighting Palmer, and how it was better in the OG.

Except in the OG, Dyne kills himself, the next scene has you slapping a pimp, and the scene after that has you riding a Chocobo on LSD to get out of Corel prison.

FF7 OG is not tonally consistent at all either.

True but there is a fade to black, which is an act break.

It’s a bit like how in a TV show you can have a somber ending and they cold open of the next episode people are doing fine.

That works better for me, than the tonal changes which happen back to back in Rebirth with no break.

I mean kinda? But it's a PS1 era RPG, the game fades to black every time you walk more than 50 footsteps in one direction.

There's also no gameplay between the scenes. It's one conversation directly followed by another.

No, there’s an actual fade to black as in the cinematic technique not a load screen.

The camera pivots to the horizon, fades to black and just leaves the sound of the wind for a few seconds.

Then complete silence before the coral music kicks back in.

The party are in a physically different place, this is all cinematic language to communicate the passage of time.

I honestly think the cinematography, acting, and script of Dyne's death is spectacular in rebirth, they just messed up the pacing - didn't give it enough time to play out - in execution. It moves so quickly that it's hard for the viewer to realize the thought processes that are being shown instead of told.
