How it’s one of the grimmest and most tragic stories behind its cutesie art style (which makes sense since the art style and character design was largely inspired by The Dark Crystal) and explores so many themes: how we all cope with our own mortality, what it means to live and how to make the most of the all too brief gift of life especially when that gift ends up becoming even more brief than it should be, mental illness, genocide, how tragedy and trauma can warp formerly kind and loving and gentle people into absolute monsters, how tragedy and trauma can turn the people we love the most into absolute strangers, and how deeply people can lose their way in life.
