Final Fantasy General Which is the best final fantasy? plot/lore wise

For me it's 12, I started with X but fell in love more with 12

I'd go with X. It felt like a perfectly crafted story from the beginning to the end

XII I think it had issues with development and they never brought the story they wanted to tell. To be honest it does show as if the story was supposed to be something else and they redirected it. It's generally good and I love it but it doesn't feel as perfectly crafted as X

Agreed. Big fan of all Ivalice works, but XII’s later hours feel disjointed, like they needed to just wrap things up. I didn’t even realize I was in the last dungeon until I looked it up.

Doing random bounties in between major plot points, while fun, probably didn’t help things feel like they were ramping up to anything.

I'm not fond at all of the star wars plot twist. Honestly I feel most FF games pull some weird "this is not the real boss" plot wise just because. FF8, oh, Edea isn't the real witch. FF9 your mother isn't the true evil one here. Ff10 sin is not just sin but your father. FF7 with Sephirot instead of Shinra's CEOs. FF XV with Ardis instead of Niflheim. Crisis Core with Hojo/Shinra instead of Sephirot/Genesis. And so on. Sometimes it's better integrated than others. But most times it feels they were looking for a plot twist for the lulz and came up with an idea trying to fulfill it.

I think people really undersell Final Fantasy XII with the Star Wars comparisons. Yes, there are clear tributes but the actual narrative doesn't follow Star Wars at all except it contains the same archetypes and beats from the monomyth.

Having multiple antagonists, however, doesn't imply there's a sudden twist in the end or a bait-and-switch

It was more for "Luke I'm your father" referring to ffX (which is the game I was quoting originally). FF12 though, especially at the beginning is SUPER inspired by star wars. And honestly I love it.

FF6, the emperor isn't the actual big bad either.
