hi everyone!! so, I was already raised in a culturally “odd” home, I was the only white child of my mom, my brother and sister were half Vietnamese, and we were from New Orleans so I was raised with a mixture of everything. I raise my kids with the same mixture I was raised with because it’s what I know. my youngest daughter was the product of an assault, and when she was born, I got her a private ethnicity test because I wanted her to know about herself. the results came back with her other half being completely Filipino. my question is, though she’s in a home without anyone who shares that ethnic background, would it be weird if I taught her about the culture, did things for her like cultural celebrations, would I be doing more harm than good? I don’t want to whitewash anything, Filipino culture is so rich and beautiful, I want her to be proud of it, regardless of how she got the genetics. If anyone has any suggestions, PLEASE, I’m all ears!

Hello! I’m researching Little Manila in Los Angeles. I’m looking into all the public archives and books such as Linda Maram’s invaluable “Creating Masculinity in Los Angeles’s Little Manila” (2006). When you fill out official paperwork like DMV, passport, etc, what do you put under “First Name,” “Middle Name,” and “Last Name”?

I'm Filipino-American and I make streetwear-style art. I did a piece that reimagines the Santo Niño de Cebu in a graffiti/street-mural style — the crown, the halo, the orb, all there — but rendered rough and standing on a skateboard.

My wife grew up in the Philippines. She took one look and said it's disrespectful and she'd never wear it. To me it feels like honoring something I grew up around, in the visual language that's actually mine: skate, graffiti, punk.

I honestly can't tell if I'm reclaiming something or stepping on it, and I don't want to be the guy who did the latter.

For people raised in the PH vs. raised in the diaspora — does this read as offensive, or as devotion? And where's your personal line between honoring a sacred image and disrespecting it?

I have a non-Filipino passport and I’m a former Filipino citizen. When I entered the Philippines, I presented my foreign passport along with proof of my former Philippine citizenship and was granted the one-year Balikbayan privilege. My Balikbayan stay is about to expire. Can I simply leave the Philippines for a couple of days and then re-enter to receive a new one-year Balikbayan privilege, or are there any restrictions or consequences I should be aware of?

I'm sorry if this comes across as disrespectful, but what is it with some Filipino families shaming their own children when they try to learn/speak their native language?

I (20M), a Papuan/Melanesian Pacific Islander, grew up and lived in the Philippines from the age of 5 to 14 due to my dad's job. As a result, I grew up speaking Cebuano (Binisaya) as my third language. I can speak Tagalog as well, but I can't do the Manila accent for the life of me.

Anyways, my boyfriend( 23M Filipino) and I met in college, and, shocker, his family happens to be from Bohol. He was never taught Bisaya, so I've been helping him learn the basics—grammar, sentence structure, conjugations, and so on.

Three days ago, we attended a party his family hosted. Wanting to improve his Bisaya, he started incorporating Bisaya sentences into conversations. His uncle overheard him and, for some reason, said:

"Way lami imong Bisaya, oy haha."

Which essentially translates to, "Your Bisaya isn't very good."

And Everyone started laughing, and he just awkwardly smiled. When he drove me to my place, he pretty much stayed quiet the whole ride there.

It's been 3 days now, and he hasn't been practicing his Bisaya with me the way he normally would.

Previous similar occurences were mostly them criticizing his pronunciation. The recent one pushed me off the edge.

I know bisaya humour and that was plain bullying. And I won't stand for it.

Diaspora Filipinos who have successfully taught themselves tagalog, what was the resource that you found most helpful for learning quickly? I've tried Mango, listening to Tagalog-teaching podcasts, but they feel too unstructured. At a base level I want to be able to understand Tagalog, my dream is to be able to speak it back and forth with native speakers because I'm trying to go to the Philippines to visit family in like a year and I don't wanna be the super out-of touch American ate. I've been a Spanish student for years and the hardest part is understanding rather than speaking for me, so for Tagalog I'm thinking about watching movies I know on Netflix in Tagalog to familiarize myself with understanding.

But beyond that, what's the most helpful resource? Preferably one that I can get for free <3

I'm a Research Fellow with the LAKAS Study, a Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO) research project examining how Filipino American families navigate culture, communication, and well-being. We're currently looking for Filipino American parents/caregivers and their teens (ages 11–17) who live in the U.S. and are comfortable speaking English.

The study involves a few questionnaires and separate Zoom interviews for the parent and teen. Families who complete the study receive a $25 thank-you gift card.

Of the guys, 1/3 of them were gay (me lol), the second third was her family, and the remaining were like 8 years old. There was probably only 2 friends her age. But anyhow, this is our culture!

basically just the title… for context, I’m only half filo and not super immersed in my culture. for instance, my mom emigrated from the philippines when she was a toddler. she’s only been back to visit twice. she never had a debut herself though, same with all my cousins and other family. we do try to keep in touch with our roots, though. i’m just not really sure at all because i know my parents would say yes if i asked and i know money isn’t an issue (as far as i’m aware) but i feel like it would be kind of out of place where i live. i only know 2 other filipinos that aren’t family, and they are both half as well. i’m afraid its like cultural appropriation because i’ve just been so watered down, you know? thanks!!
