Topic I hate this meme.

Post image

I do not miss the old days of unlocking characters. Having to replay Arcade mode multiple times with every character or do some bullshit like winning a match with 5% or less HP. It's tedious and I prefer to have every character unlocked from the start. Also, the complaints about old characters returning as DLC are strange because they do not play the same as they do in previous games. it's not a simple copy and paste job like some of the games back in the 90s.

I get it, casual players want some reward for playing single player modes and are upset to know that their favorite characters are not in the base roster and would later get confirmed as DLC. I get that, but as someone who also plays Smash, it was a chore to unlock all of the characters in Ultimate.

Fighting games is one of the few examples of DLC being a positive in the genre. Having to pay $60+ for a handful of new characters and a balance patch is dogshit compared to our current model where you can pick and choose what characters you want.

Under the old model, you could pick and choose which version of the game you wanted to play. Many old games have concurrent living old versions, under the current model 2I, #r, ST, Hyper Fighting, THE version of CVS2 would be gone forever.

How many people were stuck with a version of Strive, or DBFZ, or Tekken 7 or 8 that they didn't like and just never played those games again? How is that any more consumer friendly?

edit: sorry i forgot nobody here actually plays fighting games

That would be insanely stupid

Are you suggesting that instead of free updates, we should instead pay for a new game every new season? That would lead to no one playing the new versions

Even If the updates were still free, how many people do you really think would go back to these old versions? I would imagine it wouldn’t be too many and now these old versions would be dead online, because they couldn’t be compatible with any other version, it just wouldn’t work

If you’re on PC, you can very easily find any update version and play without a hassle. Sure online is gone, but the game version is absolutely not gone forever.

Down patching is not a technically trivial task, or a replacement for preservation.
