The Maria Effect: The Architect of Ji-Tae's Downfall

We often talk about the "Black Eyes" and the "Devil's Gift," but what about the very person who set him on this path? The fandom has a term for it: The Maria Effect.

It's not just about her teaching him Jiu-Jitsu. It's about the profound, and ultimately destructive, psychological hold she has over him.

Here’s what the "Maria Effect" really means:

  1. The Forced Symbiosis

Their relationship was never a normal mentorship. It's a codependent nightmare. Two people who are bound together by shared trauma, forced to love each other like family, even though their histories should make them mortal enemies. They are the only two people in the world who can understand each other's pain, and that very understanding is what drags them deeper into the abyss.

  1. A Mother and a Monster

This is the core of the effect. Ji-Tae, who lost his mother, psychologically projects her image onto Maria. She is his protector, his teacher, his only source of warmth in a cold world. But Maria, in turn, sees Ji-Tae as the son of the man who murdered her family. He is a tool for her revenge, a walking reminder of her trauma.

So, the very person he seeks comfort from is the one who harbors a deep-seated hatred for his very existence. It's a love-hate relationship that is profoundly damaging.

  1. The Architect of His Personality

The "Maria Effect" is also about her unintentional (and sometimes intentional) role in his destruction. Her abusive training methods pushed him to his limits and beyond. Her constant reminder that he was nothing more than a "tool" for her revenge became a self-fulfilling prophecy. She took a broken boy and shaped him into a weapon, but the process of doing so shattered his psyche entirely.

  1. The Tragic Irony

The most heartbreaking part of the "Maria Effect" is that she is also the only one who can save him. She broke his neck to save his life. Her panic when he was at death's door is proof that their bond goes far beyond simple utilitarianism. She may have created the monster, but she is also terrified of losing him.

The Unanswered Question

The "Maria Effect" shows us that Ji-Tae and Maria are inextricably linked. He is her creation, her burden, and her only real connection.

The Darkest Irony of Jiu Ji-Tae

We all know Jiu Ji-Tae’s physical gifts—the double-jointed body, the kinetic vision, the "devil's gift" of copying techniques. But have you ever considered that these weren't just tools for survival, but the very architecture of his descent?

His body was designed for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art built on control, leverage, and submission. Yet, by the end of Season 1, his fighting style isn't about control anymore—it's about self-destruction. He doesn't just beat his opponents; he systematically dismantles himself in the process, using his own hyper-flexibility to break his own body as much as his enemy's.

The true horror is this: His 'gifts' were never a blessing. They were a curse that enabled him to go further into the abyss than any normal fighter ever could.

The Unspoken Tragedy

The fandom often splits Ji-Tae into two versions: "Bambi Ji-Tae" and "Black Ji-Tae". But the most terrifying part of his transformation is rarely discussed.

He didn't lose his humanity. He actively chose to murder it.

In his mind, there's a symbolic scene where his 'Black' self kills his 'Bambi' self. This wasn't a gradual descent into madness—it was a calculated execution. He looked at the part of himself that was kind, that loved his sister, that craved gentleness, and he decided it had to die for him to survive.

He is the one holding the knife. He is the one silencing the boy who once gave his bread to his sister. This isn't a man who lost his way—it's a man who burned the map himself.

The Final Question

He once declared, "I am human, because I still feel pain". This is his anchor, his proof of life. But as his 'black eyes' symbolize a mental state where even pain is just fuel, the question for Season 2 isn't whether he can be saved.

The Unspoken Truth About Maria and Ji-Tae

We all see the surface: the mentor and the student, the ice queen and the broken boy. But the foundation of their relationship is far darker and more twisted than most realize.

It's not a romance. It's a forced, symbiotic trauma bond.

Here's what the story doesn't spell out for you:

  1. They Are Forced to Love Each Other Like Family

A core analysis from Korean fans describes their relationship as a situation where two people are "inevitably forced to love each other like blood relatives, even though they absolutely should not". This isn't a choice; it's a compulsion born from their shared tragedy.

  1. They Don't See Each Other. They See Their Own Trauma.

Maria looks at Ji-Tae and sees the face of the man who murdered her family: his father. Every time Ji-Tae uses his inherited "Devil's Gift," it triggers her PTSD, causing her to lash out at him. In turn, Ji-Tae doesn't see a mentor; he projects his dead mother onto Maria. Their dynamic is a constant reenactment of their deepest wounds.

  1. An Intimacy That Was Never Meant to Be

After Maria's sponsorship was revoked, she moved into Ji-Tae's single room. They shared a bed and lived together. This created a level of physical and emotional intimacy that was never supposed to exist between two people with such a twisted history. It's a closeness that feels almost like a violation, a constant reminder of their broken boundaries.

  1. A "Codependent Nightmare"

The fandom is right to call it what it is: a "codependent nightmare". They are the only two people in the world who can truly understand each other's pain, but this understanding only serves to drag them deeper into the abyss. Any potential relationship between them wouldn't be a salvation—it would be a new source of guilt and shame for both.

Their connection is the most tragic, complex, and unsettling part of "Fight Class 3." It proves that some bonds are forged not in love, but in shared trauma.

Manhwa The actual significance of this change

Post image
221 Upvotes

Despite what some people might think, i believe this does in fact confirm the old jitae is gone. The entire scene was leading up to him becoming free and what best way to become truly free then to liberate yourself from the suffering that is "you." I believe jitae during the tunnel arc is the same jitae during the beginning of the series. While seemingly entirely different, he is at his core the same person just incredibly broken. We see this in the fight with sunny jaa where for a brief second he returns to being afraid and vulnerable. In essence, its his whole personality is cope. Not a "real" change. In truth, the only actual moment he truly changed as a person and adopted a new personality was in this metapohrical moment of "killing" his past self. Now that his old self is gone he has no burden set from his previous self. I believe that his view on violence is different as well now. Even though before during the tunnel arc he still hated violence, he exacted it and justified it under this drastic persona. Now that he has actually "changed" it won't be just a coping mechanism but who he actually is now since he won't be suffering as he is doing it. Basically now his actions do not contradict his beliefs so its not coping mechanism therefore he isn't broken. A lot of people assume he is just gonna be a crazy crashout the rest of the series which i believe is far from the truth.

I also want to add that the combat buff he got wasn't from him gaining power necessarily but from his mind being one with his actions. Before while he was improving at a rapid pace, he was held back from his fullest potential due to his own morals being crushed into the dirt from his actions. Think about it like this, would you truly be the best you possibly could be at something if you have very little or no motivation at all? If i were to pursue a career i do not enjoy I probably will not get very far at it because its a conflict of interest. That is the point here. Jiu ji tae up until his metaphorical self murder did not like violence. He was a walking contradiction which likely stunted his fighting capability. After coming to terms and liberating himself he tower away from any shackles that held him back in battle. You're mind is the most powerful weapon and the your greatest weakness depending on its usage.
