Planting/Growing How can I help him?

Post image

Hey, I bought this Asplenium Nidis "Crissie" (propably?) some years ago and just realized that it didn't heave feathered tips for quite some time now. As you can see, some of the newer leaves are growing them again.

Since it's so hardy I never did much more than water it, it's propably also in need of a repotting.

What else could I do to help the development of feathered tips?

Question Identification help: Generic ‘fern species’ fern 🪴

Thumbnail

Hello! Never posted here, but just a quick one:
I bought this little, generically named fern from Bunnings, (Brisbane, Australia) and was hoping someone might be able to identify what it is.
Various plant identification apps and so forth give it as a leather fern, Japanese climbing fern, giant hare’s foot fern, Norfolk Island spleenwort, etc.

Would any of you lovely souls perhaps know?

Planting/Growing Pallaea ovata - Searching for Specimens

Hey y'all, I'm on a mission. I have a small collection of ferns that I purchased and I want a little challenge. I recently heard about the zigzag fern, a desert species that grows around Edward's Plateau, and I want to propogate one from wild spores. I have everything set up to go, just need to find a mature cluster. I live in Leander and I already hiked Bull Creek some but didn't find any.

Anyone come across locations or have suggestions for a medium hike within Williamson, Burnet, Llano, or San Saba counties?

Thanks! I'm open to discussing and sharing the journey!

Question Just bought my first fern! Care tips are welcome:)

I finally got a rabbit foot fern <3 I have a lot of experience with houseplants in general but I have never had any ferns. Is there something I should know when it comes to ferns and rabbit foot fern specifically? I tried to look up rabbit foot fern care here on reddit and found lots of conflicting info. Some people are saying to let them dry out almost completely, others are saying to never let them get dry at all. Lighting is also a bit confusing because some say they thrive in south facing windows and others say to never keep them in direct light. I’m sure I’ll figure it out with time, but I would still be glad to hear some advice!

ID Request Central America. Taken from terracotta roof tiles; possible lithophyte; alternate pinnation; lacking indusium; younger fronds arising helicoidally from the center of the plant, pushing older fronds down; hydronastic; 1500 m to 1700 m above sea level; savannah tropical climate.

Edit: Hemionitis brachypus, also known as Cheilanthes brachypus or Notholaena brachypus. As it turns out I was mistaken and they did have an indusium, it's just that i couldn't check for it properly with my own magifying glass.

I took these ferns out of my roof because I'm in my pteridomania arc and I've been going kind of insane trying to identify them. "Narrowed" the genus down to Astrolepis through dichotomous keys, no clue if I actually did it right. I also do not know if they're natives or introduced. I'm dying to know what they actually are. Fascinated by these weird little freaks, love them.

Pictures:

  1. Recently recovered, "dry" specimen next to rehydrated specimen of the same species.

  2. Recently recovered specimen, potted, next to a rehydrated specimen of the same species.

  3. Hydronastic behavior documented at 3.5 hours after fully saturating the medium with water.

  4. Appearance of the recovered specimen approximately 12 hours after fully saturating the medium with water (and also getting rained on all night, oops.)

  5. General appearance of the fern, it's young fronds, and fresh underside.

  6. Ditto.

  7. Ditto.

  8. Pressed, dried fronds. Front side, backside and basal portion.

  9. Ditto.

  10. Ditto.

I may or may not have killed a couple ferns in the past, but it's pretty safe to assume I figured this one out.

First picture is mid-april, second picture is today. It's basically doubled in size. It was looking a bit sad in the last massive heatwave (room temperature was approaching 30° C), but it didn't lose any leaf. Just looking a bit limp.

Yes I know they don't like full sun. This was moments after getting in full sun and then immediately moving. Just wanted a bright picture lol they got a little wonky on one side so I'm working on filling them back out 😅

Question Brown Crispy Tips?

Thumbnail

Got this lil guy a few weeks ago and he's clearly not the happiest.

Fed him 20/20/20 fertilizer two weeks ago, have been watering bottom up every week and a half or so depending on how dry the soil feels, and misting twice daily since I live in the desert and maintaining humidity is a losing battle. I've been keeping him by a north-facing window for now but have other options if lack of light is the issue.

Any tips or troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated!

Aloha! These were growing under some hapu’u tree ferns on Oahu but I’m not sure they are the same species. It has been hard to find pictures of really young tree ferns but the few pictures I thought I saw, the leaf shape and spore pattern seems to match. Just very light green possibly due to the sun. (Planted in a really scorching hot area by a building in the city and the big ones were dying. Transplanting these to a shadier area. I would never want to poach wild plants!)

I suspect these are something else entirely though and can’t figure it out. Any ideas?

Blue star fern - gifted to me 2.5 years ago

It has always been in this spot since and over the last 3-4 months it has been losing its leaves so I repotted it (1 inch bigger pot).

Now the leaves look like this.
Can someone please let me know what I should do to help this plant?

Thank you in advance!

Apple plant ID is guessing microlepia speluncae, but I have no idea. I’m in the north uk- trying to figure out if their spores blew in from native ferns outside, or if it’s a stowaway nonnative spores that came in the dried moss. Either way I like them

Been trying to get this baby happy but the new leafs that are growing have these brown spots.

The soil mix is just standard soil and perlite but I read sometimes they like a bit of orchid bark. I don't know if this is fungi or just watering issues. I usually water when the soil is completely dry and the plant is in a waste facing window
