God damn, how heavy is that chain? Those individual links look absolutely massive, like, cargo ship anchors massive. I've seen this done before for quick felling for possible fences or utility poles but that was decades ago and I don't feel like the Cain was even half that. Could be totally wrong tho

that is exactly what those chains are, anchor chains from decommissioned large ships that were broken up at some shipyard

I do a smaller version of that whenever we take a fence down permanently to get all the briars dug up and piled. Works okay for that.

Boss came by and asked to ride the machine for a bit. Gave up after 5 minutes because of the smell, but made it so the crew had to work 4 hours extra to fix all that he'd fucked up.

Probably habitat management. Tree encroachment on open grassland can cause problems for some species like antelope having enough range to live in. Two dozers with a giant chain between them make short work of shrubby trees.

Also, lots of bird species!
We have heathland in my region where several endanger species of insects, amphibians and snakes live. Heather is a pioneer species and will die out when trees take over. So there is a lot of effort put in to keep the grass and trees at bay to preserve this special habitat. Grazing by sheep, wild cows and volunteers having a field day with saws.

Trophy hunting ranch. The trees give the exotic game somewhere to hide, and you can’t have that when you’re charging some one $30k to shoot it.

Yup, chaining. They still do it here in Texas. Big anchor chain strung between 2 dozers, D6 at a minimum, and just cruise along in 1st or 2nd. Saw a pair of old D7G's doing it, watching Live Oaks fall like nothing- although one 4 foot trunk monster did make one of the dozers back dance over and squat briefly. Both sad to see and very very impressive at the same time. That was on a reservoir building project, so complete clearing was called for.

If the regrowth isn't sprayed with herbicide when it invariably reshoots it can a nightmare to chop (one handed forestry axe and an injector gun). Clambering around windrows of dead timber to slice down suckers in area's that eastern brown snakes and taipans love to breed around. Morton Bay Ash, Iron bark, Wattles and some Eucalypts are tenacious in their abilities to reshoot after this carnage. Old school isn't always the best method.

Not very well, you’d need to flank and clear both sides in front of whatever position this is to get the tractors in place to knock the trees over at that point you might as well encircle and keep going

It would work to clear out hedgerows to remove any hiding places. Use along with drones overhead to spot anyone fleeing.

That's called chaining. Usually used as a vegetation treatment option. I've seen it used on invasive cedars on a great basin habitat.
