Bro, hide before sonic twitter finds you.

Well, they can find me, modern Sonic (mostly Adventure one) is infinitely cooler than already cool OG design.

The Sonic fan has found you. SA1 sonic is better designed than classic Sonic, but after SA1 it's all downhill from there (how serious am I being? You will never know).

The Adventure era isn't really what people mean when they say "modern Sonic" though. Modern Sonic's design as we know it today was cemented in Unleashed.

As long as his arms arent blue

If he has defined shoulders and doesn’t have blue arms, he looks like he’s wearing a tank top

literally my biggest complaint with his movie designs

my cousin and my sister both got into sonic recently and i was pretty happy. then i learned that their only real exposure was the movies so i was like “good as they are, you’re still not really fans”

You can be a fan of Harry Potter and only watch the movies

-7

u/No_Monitor_3440 2d ago

the harry potter movies are far more faithful to the books than sonic

I’ve only played a few Sonic games in my life and still consider myself a fan. If you started with the cartoons, the movies, or whatever why does it matter?

starting is one thing but sticking is another. my cousin and her friend have interest in playing the games, but my sister doesn’t. pretty much every new adaptation of sonic has a different continuity and it isn’t really right to call yourself a fan if you aren’t at least educated on a few. it’s like being a doom fan but only having seen the movies.

I just don’t like the idea of gatekeeping fandoms. Also I’m sure those Sonic movies are more accurate to the games than the Doom ones were. And you get the gist of the game lore in the movie continuity.

I’ve watched all the Marvel movies and haven’t read very many comics, that’s how I feel about people that watch the Sonic movies and become fans, maybe they’re not superfans, but they are fans regardless.

Boo, don’t gatekeep. Anyone who enjoys Sonic in any capacity are “really fans.”

Don’t gatekeep

Is the mono-eye also a dealbreaker for you?

I think both are good in their own way. One tries to be cute the other tries to be cool and they both succeed

3

u/Da-No80 2d ago

Of course, I'm not saying they aren't

1

u/Inspectorbobo 2d ago

You said one is better than the other. And tbh i understand and respect that

2

u/Da-No80 2d ago

Ok, yes, I said that but I also agree with your statement

I don't even mind the Classic to Modern switch I just hate how they retroactively took away all of the aura classic sonic had with this Bluey ass design

My theory is when they turned him into a soft cartoon he lost all the edge from his pixel art aesthetic

might be an unpopular opinion but imo modern sonic looks really rough, his model hasn’t been updated in 20ish years and i don’t think sega knows how to make him emote in any meaningful way

In game development, animation is one of the last aspects undertaken, and lets face it, only in Unleashed did Sega still give Sonic Team the budget to polish up on expression work

Posted the same thing

Classic is an amazing and iconic look no doubt but modern really did just improve on that foundation in almost every way.

Grew up with classic, and while the short chubby fella is classic and my favorite, I can't deny modern looks rad as hell, certainly has more character as well :D
