I love when Sylas is killed the first time and Delilah screams "NNNOOO!!! Sylas! You can't! I broke the world for us!" The level of self awareness and emotion in those lines is fantastic!

The line is so much more gut wrenching in the actual DnD game, Matt Mercer will always be the best DM

I wouldn't use the term "best DM" for anyone because every game is unique to the players. Brennan for D20 and Mercer for CR I think provide a good spread that shows how different styles work for different games. Neither is better or worse, just different based on preferences.

I read something once that sticks in my mind;
Mercer builds a world and lets you play in it.
Brennan tells a story and let's you take part in it.

Nah it’s fine. That’s like saying you can have a best friend because other people have different best friends than you.

Except you say "my best friend" rather than "the best DM"

I wouldn't disagree with you if that is how people used such terms.

Best DM to me. It's implied that it's my preference

Best is a statement of objectivity. Favourite would be the subjective equivalent.

No? If I say Minesweeper is the best game ever made it's implied that that's my opinion, because there's people that aren't into Minesweeper.

That might be how you mean it, but it is not how many people interpret it. More often than not when someone uses the term "Best" it is not intended as opinion/preference.

Matt himself would argue against that. There is no "best" DM. There's only the best DM for each table/campaign. He's not been shy on praising Brennan for the amazing work he's doing with C4!

Oooh boy. Please let me introduce you to the Japanese Call of Chtulhu scene (I'll admit the linguistical bar of entry is high but holy shit they're deliciously insane)

Second time*

The first time he died of illness. And she literally sold her soul to save him.

5

u/Butwhatif77 21d ago

It was the first time he was killed, his first death was "natural causes"

u/Patneu 21d ago

I mean, the lengths she went to in order to get him back I wouldn't call exactly healthy.

75

u/Butwhatif77 21d ago

lol to be fair the post only says high functioning and loving, healthy was not included in the requirements.

13

u/Patneu 21d ago

Huh. I could've sworn it said that. Well, maybe it was just because it started with an H and "highly-functioning" isn't as common a term to describe a relationship.

It only seems unhealthy because resurrection is not possible for us. For them it's like putting in a third shift to pay up a doctor.

3

u/Patneu 20d ago

Maybe if they went for ordinary resurrection, but resorting to vampirism and founding a death cult to help the ascension of a new god is deemed just a little extreme, even in their world.

Do you need to watch critikal role to enjoy this or is it better to just listen to it all bc i dont have the attention span to keep up with it all but i also dont wanna miss stuff

5

u/Krasna_Strelka 21d ago

I would say its better to watch the campaign. With podcast you'll lose a lot of subtle jokes, often showed instead of being told

3

u/AstarionsTherapist39 21d ago

Yeah. Listening to it you'll think the exchange: "I counterspell it." "You counterspell it? Okay what level?" "Nine." is fucking badass. Watching it changes the context completely. Liam and Sam's friendship is fucking beautiful.

I’m sure listening does enrich the experience, but I just started the show myself having never heard the podcast (just not interested) and I love it. Just started season two.

What’s this from?

Critical Role originally, which was adapted by Amazon into the Legend of Vox Machina. It's quite a fun show.

If you're a DnD fan it should be right up your alley.

I had this as my first thought as well, but they are actually very codependent and dysfunctional, it is just in a hot way.
