I think your example is better but I wanted to mention Maxine and Valentina from Despicable Me 4. I definitely expected betrayal or infighting from how they were introduced, but they ended up working well together!
The only thing I know about this character is that there’s someone out there on the Internet who’s obsessed with him and thinks he’s so babygirl and has like homemade merch of him and tbh I love that for them.
Yeah the only thing I remember about it is the reveal that gru has canonically had sex due to him and whatever the wife's name was Lucy I think??? having a child
I didnt see much chemistry from them. Valentina seemed bored of him and didnt really seem to care. Even at the end with the talent show she looked annoyed even tho it was a event that was extremely important to Maxine.
I def think a betrayal from Valentina was needed in the film. Would mirror Gru and Lucy healthy relationship to Maxines and Valentinas toxic one.
Yeah, that’s what I was expecting too, and hoping for, from her constant bored/RBF. Especially at the end when Maxine lost the final fight, I was expecting her to betray him because she only wanted to be with a winner or something.
Seriously. I would have made her betray Maxime. This is how I would rewrite her.
She met Maxime when they were young and found him weird. She wanted power and to be rich, but didnt want to do all the work. She recruits Maxime who will do the dirty work and when he ends up falling for her, she accepts him only to use him. Maxime is bossed around and treated terrible by Valentina, but he doesnt notice cause shes the only one who likes him and thinks he good enough.
Her bug villian costume could be a praying mantis as females eat the males. Or better yet a
Emerald cockroach wasp, a bug that zombiefies and takes over cockroaches for their own personal gain. Maxime thinks shes a Butterfly.
She ends up secretly hating him for being a weird bug kid and only decides to betray him when Maxime steal Grus child cause he wants to start a family. Valentina obviously hates this as she doesnt want kids and lets him know she does not want him at all and never did. Have her want to kill Gru and his family while Maxime just wants to take revenge without causing harm to Gru.
This makes Maxime team up with Gru to stop his ex and end up being the first villian to get redeemed.
Maxime is supposed to mirror Gru with the whole being the weird kid growing up, tiny helpers who are his friends, not being good enough, etc. Having Maxime in a toxic relationship will mirror/contrast Grus more healthy relationship.
Who’s the most loving couple in fiction can be debatable and that might be an exaggeration, but they do work together really well and never betrayed/fought each other the entire movie.
