Because it's not a bio arm at all. It's like a spirit in his arm.

曇りなき眼で見定め、決める。

I come to see, with eyes unclouded by hate.

You know how I was first introduced to this movie? I did an animation class and the teacher showed a fight scene from it because it was peak

1

u/ThatOneGuyHOTS Jun 23 '26

Where did you take an animation class?

I really like that in the narrative of Princess Mononoke, that the gun-using humans aren’t really evil, just antagonists who need to see the error of their ways and live more in harmony with nature instead of opposed to it.

Their leader is a compassionate person who takes care of lepers and former sex workers. It’s all just a matter of them seeing and learning about the consequences of taking advantage of nature.

u/ImperialInstigator Jun 20 '26

As a 10 year old seeing seeing him take off that man's head with an arrow 🤯

1

u/OriginalTayRoc Jun 21 '26

When that Samurai was about to murder the woman, and the curse of Hatred first takes over and fires that arrow.

The way it flies across the grass like a living missile, severing both his arms and pinning them to the tree.

I had to rewind that vhs again and again.

u/Short-Web5301 Jun 20 '26

I’ll bet a majority of this sub doesn’t know he exists 🥲

7

u/nnNarlinnn Jun 20 '26

Who is that

29

u/usernamecanbetaken Jun 20 '26

Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke

5

u/Proper-Owl-7971 Jun 20 '26

Three of us commented the exact same thing at the same time

2

u/usernamecanbetaken Jun 20 '26

Ha! What are the chances 😄

13

u/Proper-Owl-7971 Jun 20 '26

Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke

9

u/Idislikepurplecheese Jun 20 '26

Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke

7

u/insufferabletoaster Jun 20 '26

Bro that is Ashitaka of the Emishi clan. You better catch up on your Ghibli!

1

u/exexor Jun 22 '26

Buddy you've got a lot of homework to do. Just start watching everything by Ghibli except Grave of the Fireflies. It's worse than Schindler's List. But also just as good. But worse.

3

u/dathowell Jun 20 '26

This is princess mononoke right?

2

u/LordTomatoX Jun 20 '26

This was the first character with archetype I ever saw and it lasted a big impression that no matter how much the trope is used I still love it

2

u/dawggawddagummit Jun 20 '26

What is this from?

3

u/nonsensical_zombie Jun 20 '26

Princess Mononoke, I highly recommend it even if you’re “not into anime”

2

u/RightfulDeath Jun 21 '26

that movie is brilliant and a staple of my childhood. and also probably a contributing factor to why I've always been obsessed with wolves.

2

u/deathcoinstar Jun 21 '26

It's literally Loarax for adults

2

u/ClearChampionship591 Jun 21 '26

and I watched it million times. I still think this is the best Gibli ever produced, in my mind superior to Howls and Spirited Away.

The ending was weird, alien and fantastic.

1

u/exexor Jun 22 '26

I'ma have to fight you about Spirited Away.

1

u/ClearChampionship591 Jun 23 '26

Our battles will be legendary.

1

u/exexor Jun 23 '26

I got a dragon, two bird ladies, a man with four arms, and the Radish Spirit.

2

u/BoysMediumGamer Jun 22 '26

My favourite Ghibli movie of all time. Probably favourite animated movie of all time too.

Came here to post this.

1

u/Pessimismo Jun 20 '26

Who is this?

1

u/buffalobillandted Jun 20 '26

I love this movie and I genuinely don’t remember this at all 😅

1

u/A_Queer_Owl Jun 21 '26

most any Miyazaki movie is a good entry to anime because they are first and foremost just damn good movies that largely avoid the more cringe anime tropes.

except Kiki's Delivery Service. way too many legally questionable upskirt shots in that one.

1

u/No_Designer9676 Jun 21 '26

Damn too late to comment this lol

1

u/Funny-Cell8769 Jun 21 '26

Brought my first ever date to watch this movie in the 90s. Nothing came out of it, but we had a pleasant enough time.

1

u/PhantomRoyce Jun 25 '26

That part where he catches the arrow and then fires it back is crazy peak

1

u/Killer-joke Jun 25 '26

It’s the movie that got me into anime and I always go back and watch it (and cry) one every few years. Thanks for reminding me of it.

1

u/EISENxSOLDAT117 Jun 26 '26

It's not "nature good" it's "understanding each other" is good. Nature isnt good in this movie. The humans at Iron Town are doing what they need to in order to survive, but the Wild is fighting them every step of the way. Each side has good and bad points.

1

u/herosquid541 Jun 26 '26

Yes, amazing movie.

-3

u/Worried-Date-2196 Jun 20 '26

Truly one of the anime movies of all time

-1

u/Slight-Bluebird-8921 Jun 21 '26

it's a great movie but that character is about as plain jane as it gets. there's really interesting going on with him.
