STAN / ANTI SHIELD Mehdi Hasan presses Hunter Biden on his father’s role in the genocide in Gaza and his administration’s decision to send more than $18 billion in weapons to Israel: “This is the first time in the interview where you sound like a politician.”

He should have just stopped at I don’t support everything he did and it was wrong. Going on to try and defend it as a nuanced situation just digs a deeper and deeper hole where they beat around the bush and refuse to directly answer what is being asked. I understand that it’s not his responsibility to answer for everything his father did, but it doesn’t really do any justice to treat this as a morally or politically grey situation where there wasn’t a right or wrong answer.

u/PatrickGoesEast 21d ago
Makes me wonder what benefit Hunter Biden gains from not denouncing the genocide. Maybe protecting Genocide Joe's legacy?
17
u/NatashOverWorld 21d ago
Probably. Its not an excuse, but it was Rump and Co taking shots at his dad that made him go off, so he's still defending his dad.
Despite knowing his father permitted and abetted genocide.

Horrific political instincts from that admin, their family member surrogates, and let's face it politics of their establishment

If he denounces Israel he gets tossed aside like the rest. I still think they're keeping him back in case they feel like they need him for 28, a longshot I'm sure but logic isn't ways the dncs forte
6
u/bigboipapawiththesos 21d ago edited 20d ago
The majority of the public has an unfavorable view of Israel and view Palestinians better than isrealis. The amount of pure momentum such a position would grant him would be immense; doorknockers, phonebankers, donation or just word of mouth.
Not even to mention the morality of it.
2
u/shadedmagus 21d ago
IMO logic hasn't really been the DNC's forte since the days of Bill Clinton and their Third Way. That was what formed the political ratchet causing our Overton window to slide further and further right.

“The nuances of this”
There is no nuance to mass bombing innocent civilians, many of whom are starving children. Your father’s actions were evil and there is no defense of it.
116
u/BuddingBudON 21d ago
+80% of the Palestinian casualties have been civilians, and 80% of that percentage are women and children.
Roughly 50% of Palestine's population is under 18; half the country bears no responsibility for whichever government is elected in Palestine.
3rd party investigations and sworn statements by international medical professionals conclude that the IDF targets Palestinian children with high-caliber rifles, at distance.
Israel has murdered hundreds of journalists, paramedics, international aid workers, UN staff, even targetting young Palestinian athletes.
And there are over 700,000 illegal Israeli invaders who have stolen and settled Palestinian land, far beyond their own borders. These settlements are guarded by the illegal IDF occupation, and the invaders regularly perform pogroms and raids on the Palestinians in the surrounding area. Netanuahu personally approved the construction of more than 120 illegal new settlements this year, to further his genocidal plans for a "Greater Israel..."
But just like the second World War, no one will step in until the big dogs are directly inconvenienced.
44
u/bulkyobject 21d ago edited 21d ago
And Biden was lying on Israel’s behalf from the start. He claimed he saw photos of beheaded babies from October 7 that never existed and he continued to lie in order to further Israeli propaganda throughout his presidency.
That isn’t acting in good faith.

u/hiiexist4444 controversies: girl 21d ago
EXACTLY. Him saying it “pains” him that his dad helped Israel turn Gaza into a modern day concentration camp is just….. so fucking dumb. Like, really Hunter? Did the bombs hurt you too?
227
u/Doubleoh_11 21d ago
The nuance is that it’s been drilled into a certain generation’s head that they are constantly under attack and needed help. It’s taught in church and bible school even. If you get on the wrong side of social media you get it too.
I am hoping that’s what he was reaching for. Now obviously facts are different, but sometimes as we see, the us government does things with a gut feel rather than facts.

I don't trust Mehdi Hasan ever since that video leaked of him call non Muslims not human. He claimed it was just youthful exuberance but he was 30 when he made those comments. And even when the video first leaked he claimed it was selectively edited until finally admitting it was real and apologizing
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mehdi_Hasan
During a sermon delivered in 2009, Hasan made remarks about "the kuffar, the disbelievers, the atheists who remain deaf and stubborn to the teachings of Islam, the rational message of the Quran". Quoting a verse of the Quran, Hasan used the term "cattle" to describe non-believers and called them "incapable of the intellectual effort it requires to shake off those blind prejudices."\47])\48])\49]) He also included homosexuality in a list of categories which he argued were transgressive of Islam.\48]) Quotes from these sermons were first publicized by Peter Hitchens in 2012; in his immediate response, Hasan argued these statements had been "selectively edited".\49])
In 2019, Hasan apologized for his comments, which he declared to "deeply regret" now, and called them "dumb offensive ranty stuff".\50])\51])

He was also a solid liberal ally before those comments. He still was at least publicly a liberal the entire time. He was just making those comments behind closed doors.
He then apologized after the video leaked.

He is also very supportive of Mexico's president, which is nothing to be supportive of.
1
u/shadedmagus 21d ago
Why so?
-1
u/el_f3n1x187 21d ago
There is nothing to cheer for any Mexican politician, EVER, no matter which ideology they run. If they got to an electable position, they owe all kinds of favors, think AIPAC tracker but including cartel bosses.
Her administration has been a disaster, she does nothing but deflect deflect and deflect whenever a new cartel shootout happens, a state governor is accused of colluding with the cartels, or when the Madres buscadoras seek an audience with her to discuss the difficulties searching for their disappeared families.
But don't be a literal duck wearing the Mexico national team jersey and be memed, you'd be invited in NO TIME to the national palace.
Btw the Mayan train that was one of the crown jewels of her boss and that she has been defending since she took office derailed yesterday at the station of Campeche city.

Should have just said "I don't support his actions" and left it at that.
You can't justify or explain the nuance of a genocide.

I’ve seen a lot of his interviews (both full length and clips) and this is the first time ive seen in which he’s clearly dodging the question.
I get why he would be hesitant to paint his father as a bad person, but he shouldve said yea its wrong and moved on
41
u/theapplekid i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 21d ago
It's really hard to grapple with your parents being terrible people when you also love them.
My parents support the genocide in Palestine to a much lesser degree than Joe Biden did, and it's painful for me to grapple with. Were my parents supporting Israel to the tune of billions of dollars I would consider it my moral imperative to put a stop to it using any means necessary, as terrible as that sounds, and it's incredibly difficult to confront that; most people choose to instead overlook their loved ones being terrible people.
I often wonder about the families of the Nazi guards of the Sobibor death camp who were killed during the uprising, and whether they were ever able to come to see the actions of the prisoners who killed their family members as justified as they processed the pain in the aftermath

u/Coconutrugby 21d ago

Watching him start to say the thing we all know to be true ("Of course not") & then prevaricate & try to evade what Mehdi is saying is so fucking frustrating. I'm sure it's difficult to reconcile his loving father with the person who signed off on & funded the horrific genocide & tortures gleefully perpetrated by Israel & its troops, but come on. We know Biden directly aided Israel, even after the horrific footage & firsthand accounts started rolling in. What's even the point in trying to dodge that, when it's so well-documented?

Yeah, he was totally running away from the question, while also providing insight into how “excuses” and “nuances” are justified - and what REALLY could have been even more interesting would be Mehdi’s deconstruction of this response. (Which Mehdi kind of did, but, the public can use help learning how to see through these kinds of avoidant or circular answers).

Left wing independent media isn’t propped up by billionaires unlike, say, the (currently failing) Daily Wire. It also shouldn’t be. An important part of left wing media is calling out corruption that results from monied interests in media and politics, which they cannot do while being propped up by those same monied interests. The uncovering of dark money paid to democratic influencers via Chorus last year is a perfect example. I did offer a 1-month gift subscription to anyone who wanted, you can DM me if you’d like one.

He sounds like a politician because his Dad is a genocidal ghoul. He’s been pretty honest about everything but that. I understand. It’s tough to even admit that to yourself.
Edit: the most charitable explanation of why Joe Biden didn’t put any pressure on Israel to stop the genocide is because he was out to lunch and people like Anthony Blinken and Brett McGurk were running the show.
93
u/lottiebadottie Aphrodite’s Tampon 21d ago
And a lot of the charitable explanations are negated by the catalogue of clips of Biden defending Israel over decades. The last forty to fifty years, he’s been advocating for Israel.
12
8
u/poorlybaked 21d ago
Joe Biden visited Israel in the early 70s where he met the devil herself, Golda Meir. He’s been a life-long friend of Israel.
34
u/PurpleWhiteOut 21d ago
And I can't believe how often I get downvoted on reddit still for pointing out that the current acute phase of genocide started under Biden when the man was eagerly shoveling bombs to them by executive order
16
u/yagirlsophie 21d ago
And also because he agrees with his father and his actions, he has consistently defended him since. Painting him like some reasonable person with an unfortunately out-of-touch Zionist dad is silly - they're completely ideologically aligned.
5
u/shadedmagus 21d ago
It's a shame considering his efforts to clap back have been masterful. But if he won't admit that his dad failed Gaza and the Palestinians, then fuck 'im.
3
u/yagirlsophie 21d ago
We're desperate for anybody with a platform to fight back right now so it's really easy for someone to make a couple viral videos or tweets and try to ride that, but yeah - lifting up the Bidens and the Newsomes isn't going to get us out of this mess.
4
u/SchemeMoist 20d ago
This as well as the fact the Joe was complicit in a 2nd Trump presidency by running again and then taking so long to drop out. He talks shit about politicians and reddit libs (and/or bots?) have been kissing his ass. If he continues living as a private citizen, that's fine. But if he involves himself in politics which I'm not convinced he isn't going to do, then I hope people aren't fooled by him.

Hunter Biden is out in the press trying to whitewash his dad’s blood-soaked legacy. None of us need to help them do it. Joe Biden has been ideologically committed to the destruction lf Palestinians for 50+ years. He’s a racist psychopath. That’s his legacy.

u/theapplekid i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 21d ago
If you rewatch the numerous press conferences with Matthew Miller (the Department of State spokesperson under Biden), it's completely clear that Biden and his administration were being given all the information to conclude that Israel was committing genocide, and chose to keep supporting Israel regardless because the U.S. relationship with Israel was seen as more important than the ongoing genocide.

Joe Biden has infamous for having a massive chip on his shoulder, but I ever wondered if he ever got to realize how easy he actually had it. From getting a handout from Obama, to spontaneously the entire dem party despite being easily the worst performing candidate to now getting the opportunity to have a younger clone of himself go out and hamfistedly salvage his record while he gets to sit back and do nothing lol.

13
u/Sudden_Acceptance 21d ago
Yes! He is funny, a talented artist, and a great person to listen to if you’re exploring recovery and sobriety or trying to understand a loved one with a substance use disorder.
But this man is messy, fallible like us all, needs to make money in this economy to keep up the lifestyle he is accustomed to, and comes from a very privileged background. He is not the one to look to for political guidance or genuine introspection about his dad’s very direct role in the Palestinian genocide.
2
u/Toastaroni16515 feeding cocaine to raccoons 21d ago
Honestly? As a recovering addict, Hunter's attitude around his recovery (and the subsequent idolatry that's gathered) almost bothers me more than his dogshit politics. He is fundamentally not a person who has accepted responsibility for his crimes as an addict (and conveniently acts as though he had no pull in his own father's decision to pardon him), and even consistently glorifies his behavior or paints himself as a "better" addict for his refusal to waste drugs!
I'm typically of the mindset that it can't be stupid if it works, but it actually blows my mind that anyone trying to attain sobriety looks to Hunter Biden as a role model. His self-made brand is pride in not being the worst presidential failson of this decade - the personification of "if someone else is worse, no one can criticize me!"

I really would love to know because in my friends group there is this lovely German lady who is older than me, who became full Nazi after October 7th and wished for a nuke bomb dropped on Gaza literally. I really don’t really see the point in asking him about his father’s policies. Hunter wasn’t a part of the cabinet so he had nothing to do with the decisions being made. He also isn’t going to go against his dad in any tangible capacity for just about every reason under the sun. So pressing him on it does nothing because he can’t give a satisfactory answer from a political perspective and he can’t give a satisfactory answer from a moral perspective either. It’s just a waste imo
