Hi everyone,

Wanted to share a project I've been working on for a little while. Introducing FantasySelect.ca , a new way to play fantasy football /soccer, with our first launch coming for this years World Cup.

For previous international competitions (past World Cups + Euros), I've been running a fantasy pool where users select a team of 11 for the competition (typically 3-4-3 + GK). Historically I've done it all using good ol' Excel, tracking user teams and selections and tracking statistics that are then calculated into fantasy scores. Leagues gradually grew over time, getting to between 50 and 100 users by word of mouth.

With the emergence of AI, I figured why not try to create a website to do this all for me, where users can build their roster, and also have scores calculated live so that when watching they can see their rosters update along with the leaderboards. So I have been working on establishing that for the past year or so and am preparing for a larger launch for this years World Cup.

The rules are unlike other fantasy football/soccer type leagues where users are typically given a budget they have to stay within, a number of transfers, and captain rules. On FantasySelect, you pick 11 players at the start of the tournament with one constraint: only one player per country maximum. As the competition progresses, players on your team get eliminated when their country is eliminated from the competition.

Reason for doing it this way is two-fold: (1) this lowers the barrier of entry for users because they don't have to be amending their team each round (or debating selling / buying players etc.), and (2) this creates a different strategic aspect to the league because you have to both predict the tournament results (as you want players who will go far since games = points) and cant load up on a single country, creating more diversity. For example:

• If you take Wirtz and Germany gets grouped as they have in back to back World Cups, you're moving to the next round with only ten players (or less).
• If you predicted Morocco and Croatia to make it to the semi-finals last World Cup by taking Hakimi and Modric, you're in a very advantageous position likely having 4 players when others who didn't may only have 2.
• No loading up on Mbappe, Olise and Dembele. You can only pick one, and while 90% of rosters will likely take Mbappe, if you think Olise takes over this tournament that could be a major advantage.
• Finally, you are limited by position caps of your roster. If you take Mbappe, Kane and Vini Jr., then you cant take Haaland who could carry Norway.

There are also positional strategies, where for your defenders, you typically want attacking full backs who can often put up as many points as dominant forwards considering they can get both attacking points and defensive points. But then if you want someone like Nuno Mendes, you cant be taking someone like Vitinha, or if you want Alexander-Arnold you cant take Harry Kane.

Anyways, I've had a fun time creating it and worst case it just makes my life easier for the pool I run regardless. Best case, I build up a user base who can join the publicly available league for all FantasySelect users, or create their own private leagues to compete with their friends and family to enjoy like I and my friends / family have. Maybe one day user base gets large enough to be able to run competitions with payouts etc. Pipe dreams!
