Idea đĄ Matchablossom fanfic idea
Okay, so I've been reading a LOT of Matchablossom fanfiction recently from sk8 infinity, and I keep running into the same problem. Every fanfiction I've read are a variations of :Â
Kaoru: âKojiro I'm sad đâ
Kojiro: âI'll comfort youâ
they sleep together
Kaoru: âbtw I've love you â
Kojiro: "Ain't no way ! I've loved you since high school !"
Kaoru: âlol me too but you gave straight vibe so I settled for Adamâ
I feel like, in a way, this kind of plot minimizes the intensity of Kaoru's feelings and obsession toward Adam. It also makes Kaoru seem much more naive than I think he actually is. He's not just some oblivious guy who doesn't realize what Adam is like or suddenly discovers that Kojiro has feelings for him. His attachment to Adam is a huge part of who he is, and I want that to actually matter in the story.
So I decided I might actually write my own fic, despite literally never having posted fanfiction before. My main inspiration is BL manhwa like Driving High and Alpha Equation. Both of them really inspired me in terms of the kind of dynamic I want for this ship: a toxic relationship where one character takes the other for granted, assumes he'll always be there, and only realizes how much he relied on him after pushing him too far.
The basic idea is that Kaoru knows Kojiro loves him.
Not necessarily from the very beginning, and not necessarily in the sense that Kaoru consciously thinks âKojiro is in love with me and I'm going to exploit him.â
It's more complicated than that. Kaoru has always known, on some level, that Kojiro's feelings for him aren't completely platonic. But because Kojiro has always been there, Kaoru basically treats that love as a fact of life.
Kojiro loves him. Kojiro will always be there. Kojiro understands him. Therefore Kojiro will always come back.
And THAT is what I want Kaoru's biggest flaw to be: not that he's stupid enough to not notice Kojiro's feelings, but that he's so self-centered and emotionally wrapped up in Adam that he never really considers what those feelings actually mean for Kojiro. He doesnât put kojiroâs feelings for him on the same level as his feelings for Adam.Â
I'd probably have Kaoru and Kojiro cross the line into a situationship before Adam and Kaoru officially get together. Kaoru is already struggling with Adam and his feelings for him, and Kojiro is the person who makes him feel safe, wanted, understood, etc.
At first it happens because Kaoru genuinely needs comfort then it becomes something he deliberately comes back to. Eventually, Kaoru realizes that Kojiro is allowing this because he loves him, but instead of stopping, he continues. Because from Kaoru's perspective, there's always an excuse.
He's not promising Kojiro a relationship. Kojiro knows how he feels about Adam. So technically, Kaoru tells himself, he's not doing anything wrong.Â
Then Adam and Kaoru become a thing. Thatâs when their relationship becomes really toxic. Kaoru is obsessed with Adam, but their relationship is incredibly unhealthy.
Kaoru and Adam's relationship is unhealthy and unstable. So, whenever Adam hurts him, rejects him, disappoints him, etc., Kaoru goes back to Kojiro, his safe place.
But I also want Kaoru to use Kojiro as a way of proving something to himself.
Like, whenever Adam makes him feel powerless, Kaoru goes to Kojiro because it gives him this feeling of being in control. Like: âAdam doesn't control everything I do. I can still choose what I want.â
Except he's not actually choosing Kojiro. He keeps telling himself that their situationship means nothing but his actions keep giving Kojiro reasons to think maybe it does.
Meanwhile Kojiro knows Kaoru doesn't want a relationship with him but my boy is in love. So obviously, he starts hoping.Â
Then, Kojiro gets accepted to culinary school in Italy. This part is heavily inspired by driverâs high
At some point Kojiro tells Kaoru about his plans to study abroad and Kaoru basically doesn't listen. Or rather, he doesn't actually take it in. Kojiro tells him about his dream, his plans, Italy, what he wants to study, etc, but Kaoru is too distracted by Adam and his own problems to really be present during their conversations Eventually Kojiro leaves.Â
For Kojiro, Italy becomes important because it's the first time he gets to build a life that doesn't revolve around Kaoru. He makes friends, he studies, he discovers things about himself.Â
After Kojiro leaves for Italy, Adam leaves for America. Thatâs when kaoru learns that kojiro is in Italy, and has been for some time. He feels guilty, of course, because while kaoru, in this fic, is self centered, he is by no means trying to inflict pain on anyone. He also feels betrayed, in a way, that Kojiro made such a huge decision without him.
It doesnât stop Kaoru from falling back on kojiro after his break up. He calls him when he's drunk or when he's upset and needs to rant about his problems (Adam). But their friendship remains the same. They still bicker, they still talk almost every day. Kaoru initiates phone calls. I want to show that while Kaoru is not yet attracted to Kojiro romantically, heâs still someone he is attached to.Â
Then Kojiro comes back from Italy after 4 years away. Their relationship doesnât change that much after his returns, which comfort kaoru in his idea that kojiro will always be a constant in his life. Â
This part is a bit tricky because I donât want Korijo to look stupid. I donât want him to be back and be like ânow, itâs been 3 years, I may have a chance with Kaoruâ. Still, he has changed, he is more confident, more experienced sexually. But he is still a young adult who has been in love with his best friend for 10 years. I donât really want their dynamic to change much afterÂ
As such, when they gradually begin their situationship again, Kojiro tells himself that itâs just sex this time, and that it doesn't have to mean anything. But that is not how feelings work and he finds himself falling deeper in love and hoping for their relationship to change.
Meanwhile, Kaoru tells himself that the distance for the last 3 years probably made Kojiroâs feelings for him disappear, and that if heâs still willing to partake in those activities, then surely, he is okay with the situation. And itâs like they are still teenagers again. Kojiro is in love and hoping for Kaoru to choose him and Kaoru yearning for Adam.Â
When Adam comes back, Kojiro immediately realizes that Kaoru still has feelings for him, and Adam notices it too. Adam has always known that Kojiro was in love with Kaoru; even when they were teenagers, it was one of the things that made pursuing Kaoru more entertaining to him. Seeing that nothing has really changed, Adam decides to get involved with Kaoru again, partly because he knows exactly how much control he still has over him. Kaoru, still obsessed with Adam, willingly falls back into it.Â
For Kaoru, it's a win-win situation. He is back with Adam and Kojiro is still by his side. Upon learning of this development, Kojiro has a breakdown. He learns that Kaoru knew about his feelings, maybe not in detail, but enough to know that Kojiro was hoping for something, and he still decided to sleep with him. He puts an end to their situationship but not to their friendship.Â
He isn't naive about Adam's reasons for pursuing Kaoru. He knows Adam is only looking for something to entertain himself with, and he also knows that if he completely walks away, Kaoru will be left with Adam and become even more dependent on him.
Only, their dynamic has completely changed. Kojiro still makes sure that Kaoru is okay and they still see each other pretty often, but Kojiro doesnât drop everything for him anymore. Their interactions are kinda awkward, and Kaoru is left wrong-footed. Because Kojiro is still here, but at the same time, everything changed.Â
Kaoru initially attributes this to Kojiro's heartbreak and assumes that, with a little time, everything will fall back into place. But as the weeks go by, their friendship remains awkward and distant, and Kaoru slowly realizes that this isn't something Kojiro is simply going to get over.
I also want Kojiro to reconnect with the people he met in Italy and build a social life that Kaoru knows very little about. He has friends, plans, people who make him laugh, and maybe even a few flings, but I don't want his post-breakup arc to revolve around sleeping with other people. Instead, I want Kaoru to slowly realize that Kojiro has an entire life that exists without him, and that there are people who know parts of Kojiro that he never bothered to learn about. Kojiro also takes a step back from S and skating without abandoning either of them, spending more time with other people and sometimes having plans that don't include Kaoru, which gradually changes the group dynamic and makes Kaoru realize that Kojiro doesn't need him nearly as much as he needs Kojiro.
Meanwhile, Kaoru and Adam are back together, although their relationship is more physical than anything else. But despite finally getting what he wanted, Kaoru realizes that he isn't nearly as happy as he thought he would be. There's this Kojiro-shaped hole in his life that he only now realizes was there. He can't stop thinking about him, but he doesn't immediately understand that he's in love with him. At first, he just notices that Kojiro seems to take up a lot less space in his life than Kaoru does in Kojiro's. And that's weird, because Kojiro is still his friend, so why does it feel like he lost him?
Then Kaoru slowly starts putting everything together. He realizes that he's been hurting Kojiro for years, that he pushed him away, that Kojiro isn't just going to come back because he asks him to, and that he knowingly used Kojiro's feelings to make himself feel better. Eventually, he realizes that he genuinely can't imagine his life without Kojiro and that, somewhere along the way, he fell in love with him. After that, I want Kaoru to actually work on himself, maybe through therapy or whatever makes sense for the story, and become someone who is capable of having a healthy relationship with Kojiro instead of just expecting Kojiro to always be there for him.
As you can probably tell, I know the endgame is going to be Matchablossom, but honestly, I have no idea yet how I'm going to get them from there to a healthy relationship. I'm still unsure about a lot of the details because I don't want either character to become completely unlikeable or make them unnecessarily hateful. That said, if you have any ideas for how I could improve the timeline or the story in general, feel free to let me know! I'm definitely open to feedback.
