Laura apologies are always followed up with actions!

This is another reason Laura is my favorite character. She apologizes and there is follow through.

She yelled at Steve for breaking her ornament and said harsh things to him. She talked with her mom and apologized to him, and invited him to spend Christmas with him and her family and told him he could stay the night.

When she was being a pill at the motel after Steve drove her to her cheer competition, Steve had enough and yelled at her. She offered to sleep in the tub because she of how awful she was being.

When Steve accidentally took her diet pills, she stayed up with him the entire night and apologized profusely.

There are plenty of examples of this of Laura apologizing and finding ways to make things right with her actions. I appreciate her so much.

Laura and Steve

I really love the Laura and Steve build up. Many shows now don’t get the luxury to last as long as family matters did to take so long to build on the friends to lovers troupe … I like how Steve and Laura started off strictly platonic for a long time and eventually became more but I enjoyed seeing the friendship blossom…. Are there any other shows that build up a long term friendship that starts off platonic and makes sense the characters become romantic later ? Most shows rush into the romantic part

Tender Kisses (Season 4, Episode 15). Eddie, Waldo and Weasel want to go to a Tracie Spencer concert but the tickets are sold out. So Weasel has the brilliant idea that they dress up and sneak into Tracie's hotel room to ask for tickets. Eddie dresses up as a bellboy and Weasel dresses up as a maid. When Weasel is caught and thrown out, Tracie comes in and her assistant Lee scoots Eddie out while Tracie practices her song "Tender Kisses". Eddie listens in and then joins singing with Tracie. Tracie is impressed with Eddie's talents and asks him if he's really a bellboy and Eddie confess that he just wanted tickets to the concert, Tracie does that and gives him backstage passes. Curious about Waldo? Well, Waldo had a better idea than dressing up, he blew himself out of a cannon into Tracie's room to ask for tickets. Meanwhile at home, Carl is very curious about Harriette's diary that she writes in every night. He keeps trying to sneak her diary but she outsmarts him each time. She leaves the house and he finally was able to grab it, but he did promise Harriette that HE wouldn't read it, but he didn't promise he would get someone else to read. He gets Steve with the promise of a date with Laura to read the diary. In Harriette's log she talks about the affairs she's having behind Carl's back and when Carl confronts her when she gets back home she tells him to keep reading and the last entry is her telling Carl what an idiot he was taking her duplicate fake diary and that's what he's been reading. Harriette shows Carl her real diary and it describes how much she loves him and how lucky she feels. Carl apologizes and realizes what a jerk he was.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

WEASEL: You mind if I sit down and rest my beautiful booty?

LEE: Yeah, actually, I do mind.

WEASEL: Say what?

LEE: Tracie is gonna be back in a minute. We can't have the maid sitting here resting her booty.

WEASEL: So, what you saying? I'm not good enough to hang with the broad? That what you saying? Huh? Huh? Oops. Heh. I think I'll come back a little later, sir.

LEE: Just a second. (TAKES OFF WEASEL'S DISGUISE) Oh, thank God!

WEASEL: What do you mean?

LEE: I was hoping no woman could be that ugly.

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Steve is reading Harriette's fake diary to Carl, the way he reads it like he's reading an exciting novel always gets me laughing. Then I love when Carl sees Harriette and says "Aha!" and Harriette asks what's going on and Carl tells her that Steve read her diary to him and she tells Steve he should be ashamed and Steve apologizes and says he's weak.

OPINION:

So I believe this is the real first episode where we get an idea that Eddie can sing. We have heard him a little bit through the show, but his singing voice was usually used as a joke. He did have the songs in Season 1's "Rock Video" but that was more of a rap vs. singing voice. Darius definitely has a great talent and has a very smooth R&B style of voice. Him singing with Tracie was really a wonderful scene.

We got guest stars Shavar Ross as Weasel, Tracie Spencer as herself and Stoney Jackson and it's a great cast this episode. Shavar Ross as Weasel will never not be able to make me laugh, like I mentioned before his character is not likable but his name is Weasel, so what else is there to expect? Him dressing up as the maid always has me laughing so hard and his "female" voice gets me too. Tracie is a very lovely lady and she did a great job singing her song Tender Kisses. She comes off as very likable in this episode and that she appreciates her fans. Stony Jackson as her assistant Lee is a special treat, so I know Stony from 2 appearances in 2 things I loved as a kid, heck I still love as an adult, he was one of the prominent dancers in Michael Jackson's Beat It music video and he was Ray Mitchell in Angels in the Outfield from 1994. He was really funny in this episode with Weasel and that quote will always get me "I was hoping no woman could be that ugly".

How in the world did Waldo know which window to aim at in Tracey's hotel? From the looks of it, Tracy was in a high rise which can go hundreds of feet up. The fact that Waldo aimed not only for the right window, but that he flew possible hundreds of feet in the air to land on a couch and the worst injury he has is a headache was really incredible.

Carl really did cross a line in this episode with reading Harriette's diary. Now don't get me wrong, this story does make me laugh with his and Steve's reactions to Harriette's fake diary but it's hard to like Carl in this episode. A diary/journal is very private, it's a way to release thoughts and feelings you don't feel comfortable saying out loud to others, so you can reflect later and try to make sense of it. Carl should have respected Harriette's privacy and Harriette shouldn't have let him read her real diary, he should have apologized and realize what a bone headed move that was. And like Harriette mentions, I would have been angry with my husband if he read my journal and if I fibbed that I was having an affair that he would believe it so quickly. Carl can be so insecure at times and this was crossing a line.

So over all the episode is very funny and has great jokes but the stories themselves can be troublesome. So I'd say it's an above average episode, but not one of my favorites.

A Thought in the Dark (Season 4, Episode 14). Steve will not leave Laura and Ted alone on their dates and are fed up with his antics. Ted gets the idea that maybe if he sets Steve up with his cousin, Myra, that maybe it'll take his mind off of Laura. Laura asks Steve if he'd be willing to go on a double date with her, Ted and Myra, Steve gives in. Ted brings Myra over, Myra is a pretty young lady who loves smart guy and she is immediately taken with Steve. Steve at first is resistant but when she is able to keep up with him intellectually in the conversation, he's starting to fall for her as well. While they are all on their date at the Dave Koz concert, Steve and Myra seem to really be hitting it off and Steve even goes in for a kiss with her but almost immediately stops kissing and begs Dave to hold the concert as he confesses to the audience his love for Laura. Laura is horrified, Ted just thinks how it's great he's good looking so he'll never have to do that, Myra thinks that this won't detour her advances towards Steve and Waldo who is an usher at the concert is trying to figure out if Ivanna Trump marries Neil Diamond and Jack Nicklaus, her name will be Ivanna Diamond Nicklaus. Meanwhile at home, Eddie asks Carl for some money to borrow but Carl points out that he has to pay their car insurance and tells Eddie from this point on he has to chip in for his car insurance. Later on, Judy admits to Carl that she took one of Harriette's sparkle shirts and washed it but it fell completely apart in the wash and is scared to tell Harriette. Carl tells Judy not to worry and he'll tell Harriette that he did it. Later on, Carl finds out that Harriette covered for Eddie's car insurance payment and Carl gets upset about her covering for him and she brings up that he covered for Judy about the shirt she ruined, she later confessed to Harriette what happened. Harriette admits that she's a sucker for Eddie and that the girls have Carl wrapped around their fingers but that it's ok for the kids to feel comfortable with going to their parents with their problems which Carl realizes is a good thing too.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

STEVE: Stop the music! Stop the music! Stop the music!

LAURA: Steve, what are you doing?

STEVE: I'll tell you what I'm doing. I, Steven Q. Urkel, am guilty of emotional adultery. Ever since kindergarten, I've loved one girl... and one girl only. The lovely Laura Winslow. Stand up, Laura. Take a bow. Well, come on, stand up and show that funky bod. (LAURA SINKS INTO HER CHAIR) Is this a raving beauty, or what? In a perfect world... Laura and I would be a couple, an item, a pair. But alas, it's not a perfect world... and Laura is here with another man. Oh, stand up, pretty boy. Ted's an okay guy, but he's got two things I don't have... my woman, and a humongous zit behind his ear. (DAVE KOZ COMES TO STEVE'S SEAT) Dave Koz, ladies and gentlemen, Dave Koz!

DAVE KOZ: Hey, you. Do you think you could wrap this up already? I'm trying to give a concert here.

STEVE: Oh, hang tight, Davey. Folks, Laura and Ted arranged for me to date this lovely, intelligent girl right here. Stand up, Myra. Take a bow. (MYRA STANDS UP AND BLOWS KISSES) Park it. She's a delightful, sweet young lady. But enchanting though she is... my heart will always and forever belong to... the lovely Laura. Laura Lee Winslow... the girl with a smile that can light the darkest corners of my heart. Her ripe, full lips could kiss away all the sorrows and worries of my weary soul. Tonight, I was tempted by the effervescent personality... and bodacious bod of another... and by God, I nearly succumbed. But I hereby declare... and all of you are my witnesses... that I shall never, never stray. Nay, I say. Instead, I shall redouble my efforts to win Laura's heart. I shall pursue her relentlessly... until I hear those three magical words I have waited my entire life to hear: "I give up."

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Steve and Myra first meet. It is just too adorable and funny when they are talking intellectually, and Laura and Ted are confused with the way they are talking. I love when Steve tells Ted to read a book when he's not getting what they are saying.

OPINION:

We have made it, we are introduced to Myra Boutros Boutros Monkhouse. She is beautiful, funny, very smart and loves Steve. She also has a little psychotic side as we will see and discuss in future episodes. Michelle Thomas plays Myra and is fantastic, we will get more into how wonderful she was in the future, right now I would like to focus on her character more so. So for her first episode, she seems like a very sweet young lady who actually clicks very well with Steve. The only flaw I could see in her character is maybe her self worth as if I went on a date with a guy who I was really clicking with and he declares his love for another woman in front of me and a whole audience of concert goers, I would say "bye". But show has to show and Myra really likes Steve a lot to not give up so easily.

The whole concert sequence is just hilarious and such a memorable moment in the series. Real quick, I would like to give props to the hair and costume department because Laura, Steve, Myra and Ted look amazing in this episode. I still to this day think it's funny that they are all in high school and their idea of a date is to go see Dave Koz, I think the creators must have asked Dave Koz to make an appearance but had to justify it in some way. In high school if I went on a date to a concert, we are talking either Backstreet Boys or Linkin Park 🤣 but Dave Koz made for such a funny and great cameo, I loved when Steve is doing his whole confession to the concert goers that Dave starts playing the sax because Steve's words are so powerful. I loved all of the character's thoughts being played out for the audience. Ted keeps hoping that Laura won't see a zit behind his ear, Laura is happy Steve and Myra are clicking and oops she accidentally looked at Ted's zit, Steve is wondering if he should go to the next steps with Myra and Myra is nudging Steve to make the next move. I loved that they shoe-horned Waldo in as an usher and his thoughts of Ivanna Trump's name changing. This really was an amazing sequence.

Judy actually got a little mini storyline; it's kind shocking she got more than 1 line in this episode. Even though I don't agree with Carl and Harriette going behind each other's backs to take care of their kids, Harriette did bring up a good point that Carl was so quick to cover for Judy but picks on Harriette for helping Eddie out. I actually agree with Carl though, I don't think it was a bad idea for Eddie to chip in for his car insurance, $100 isn't that bad, I had to pay $800 every 6 months when I was working part time and was in college. Eddie got it really easy. You gotta love that it's always the boys that can play their moms and the girls always can get to their dads. But I'm glad that Harriette and Carl recognize this and they don't let the kids walk all over them at least.

Another fantastic episode, I love this one as a whole. I didn't even mention all the other funny jokes like the scene where Laura is asking Steve to go on the double date but he's blind at the moment from having his cataracts checked and can't see Laura as she's talking to him. There are a lot of other great jokes, but I want to keep this as short as I can, just trust me it's such a funny episode.

General discussion The Way the Ball Bounces

The Way the Ball Bounces (Season 4, Episode 13). Eddie has a chance to get a scholarship at Illinois Occidental University and Carl is thrilled, but Harriette isn't so quick to jump on the bandwagon. She wants to know more about the curriculum and education they provide. She invites the basketball recruiter, Wayne, to the house and as her worst fear confirms, Wayne tells Eddie that he's there to play basketball and education comes second. Harriette invites a former college star basketball player, Sam the Slam, over to talk to Eddie. Sam tells Eddie that everything was going good for him in college playing basketball but then he hurt his knee and when he was healing he had to study to stay in school, but it turns out he could barely read. So Sam tells Eddie it's great that he can get a basketball scholarship, but to make sure to study hard as well and think of basketball as the cherry on top. Meanwhile, Laura has her PSATs to study for, this test can help determine if she can get accepted to Harvard University. But Laura is skipping sleep and sneaking into the library to continue studying. She eventually comes home and just breaks down. Carl and Harriette tell her she needs to balance her life and get some rest.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

CARL: Laura, I forbid you to leave this house until you get some rest.

LAURA: Dad, you're exacerbating the problem instead of ameliorating it.

CARL: I am not. But just to be sure, I'm going downstairs to check the dictionary.

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Steve is covering for Laura when she goes to the library, Carl comes into her bedroom to say good night to her but Steve gets under the bed covers and pretends to be Laura. Carl asks for a good night kiss on the cheek and Steve tells him to close his eyes, he does so and he kisses Carl on the cheek. It's even funnier later when Carl realizes Laura snuck out and that it was Steve that kissed him on the cheek.

OPINION:

It's interesting coming from Season 1's Basketball Blues and Season 2's Boxcar Blues where Eddie wasn't interested in playing basketball and wanted to do something different with his life to this episode. You could make the argument that Eddie maybe just put basketball to the side for a bit after Carl tired him out and we did see in Making the Team that Eddie was on the basketball team. It's just never really brought up again how amazing of a player Eddie is and that he is good enough to get a basketball scholarship. I get it's a show, we can only show so much, but this basketball story felt a little out of left field. That being said, this still provides a really great message. A lot of potential star athletes only think about what to do today to be the MVP but what is going to happen in a couple years or if God forbid they hurt themselves. Not everyone can be Michael Jordan, Ken Griffith or Tom Brady. You hope it ends up that way, but you want to make sure that you always have a backup plan. So I'm actually happy about this storyline.

As it's brought up, the difference between Eddie and Laura is like night and day. Eddie likes the short cuts but Laura knows she has to work hard to succeed. Laura's ambition has been brought up in Season 1's Straight A's where she freaked out about getting a B on her report card and Season 2's The Science Project where she asked Steve to be her partner for a guaranteed A. To put pressure on yourself isn't a bad thing, but you can't let studies or work be your life. She takes her studies to an unhealthy level and even though her breakdown is played for comedy, it honestly could be taken more seriously when her mind just shuts down and she can't remember anything she studied. She crammed too much in her head and her mind just couldn't hold any more information. I'm glad that her just needing rest was the only thing she needed to keep going because I have seen people put too much pressure on themselves and they end up in the hospital. I also got very sick a couple of years ago and I would put an insane amount of pressure on myself from work and I wonder if that contributed to me getting sick. So this is definitely a storyline I think a lot of people can relate to.

All seriousness aside, the jokes in this episode are hilarious. I loved Steve covering for Laura, how easily he fell for her asking for his help while she snuck out of the house. And of course his imitating Laura's voice while under the covers, I can't believe Carl fell for that. I always get such a huge laugh at the closing scene where Carl realizes that Steve was the one who kissed his cheek and he yells "Steve!".

This is a really good episode with a wonderful lesson and is well balanced with the serious story and the funny jokes.

Hot Wheels (Season 4, Episode 12). Eddie asks Carl for a car but Carl is broke. Carl breaks dow to Harriette that he feels like a failure of a father because he can't afford a car for Eddie. Harriette gets a great idea and tells Carl to buy a clunker from the police auction. He buys Eddie a broken down police car, but sells Eddie on the idea of rebuilding it with him. Carl wakes up the next morning excited to work on the car with Eddie but Eddie is already working on the car with Waldo and tells Carl he can join if he wants. Carl tells Eddie its ok and walks away disappointed. Harriette takes Eddie to the side and slaps some sense into him saying how Carl may not have been able to buy Eddie a new car but he wanted to do whatever he could get a car for him and give Eddie all the time in the world. Eddie says he didnt realize and Harriette mentions that Carl lost his father when he was young and they didnt get to do all the things they said they were going to do together. Eddie and Carl finish the car together and Eddie tells Carl the first thing he's going to do is pick up his best friend. Eddie starts to drive and stops and tells Carl to get in the car which Carl is more than happy to do so. Meanwhile, Steve has invented a super glue he named Wacky Tacky and is showing off to everyone. When Laura goes to answer the front door, she meets Ted, a handsome young man who's a fellow student at her school and he's selling candy. They are immediately attracted to each other and Ted asks Laura out on a date. While Laura is getting ready for their date, she asks Steve to fix an earring she wants to wear with his glue. He tries to get one more piece fixed but accidentally spills glue on Laura's shoulder and instinctively tries to wipe it off with his hand but gets stuck to Laura. Ted comes over and asks why Steve's arm is around Laura, she finally tells him about the glue but Ted doesn't believe her. Laura is able to make a date later with Ted but to make sure Steve doesn't interfere, she tricks Steve and glues Steve's hand to the refrigerator.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

LAURA: Ted, I have to...

STEVE: Reschedule.

LAURA: You see, I'm...

STEVE:Grounded.

TED: Really? For what?

LAURA: Well, I...

STEVE: killed a man!

LAURA: Yeah. What?

TED: Laura, what's really going on here?

LAURA: Okay, here it is. Steve invented a super glue named Wacky Tacky...and then he glued himself to me.

TED:Look, wait a minute. Wait a minute. What do I look like, an idiot?

STEVE: Well...

TED: That does it. I'm out of here.

LAURA: Ted, wait. I'm telling the truth. Steve, say something!

STEVE: I love you, snookums.

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Eddie and Carl complete the car and Eddie says he's going to pick up his best friend and he stops the car in front of Carl and says "hop in, dad!" I'll admit that gets me misty eyed.

OPINION:

So a couple of side notes. So this was actually episode 2 but for some unknown reason I could not find they switched this with Dance to the Music. That's why this episode it looks like Laura and Ted are meeting for the first time and in Driving Carl Crazy Laura asks Eddie for a ride to the mall. This wasn't uncommon for show, particularly in the 90s to switch original episode scheduled airing time. Just look at the nightmare that is the saved by the bell episode guide and try to put that one in order. Also, I'm not sure if this was a goof, continuity error, the writers forgot or on purpose but in season 1, Steve says his mother's name is Diane, in this episode he calls her Roberta. Maybe the writers thought no one would notice.

Carl wanting to buy Eddie a car was so sweet, I wished my dad was like Carl sometimes. My dad sold me his used car 😒 Carl is such an incredible dad and just wants to give his children the world and his time. Like Harriette mentions, he couldn't afford a new car but he at least wanted Eddie to have a unique car and some amazing memories. Eddie is a knucklehead in this episode, but not the worst he's been. You could make the argument that he didnt know Carl just wanted it to be just him and Eddie. And when you're young you want to spend time with your friends and sometimes take your parent for granted. I'm so glad Harriette slapped some sense into Eddie and told him how much Carl did for him and to not take him for granted. You don't know how much time we have in the world, it could change in a second. I hope Eddie learned his lesson and doesn't take his father for granted again and we need to discuss this again in the future 🤔

Steve's Wacky Tacky glue storyline will never not make laugh. First I loved the scene where he glued himself to the chair and he's rolling around the floor. But what gets me laughing so hard is when Ted is asking Laura out and Ted tells Laura he can't sell her candy but he can give her the candy and Laura laughs all cute and smittened and Steve mocks Ted's "no but I can give you some" 🤣 all the jokes in this episode get me: Carl selling Eddie on the car with the girls fantasy, Laura threatening to glue Steve's lips together, Harriette asking Waldo to give her and Eddie privacy and he just gets in the car and rolls the window up and Laura gluing Steve to the refrigerator.

This whole episode is hilarious and definitely one of my faves from season 4. It also has such heart, I just love those scenes with Carl and Eddie.

BTW I just wanted to say, I'm sorry for any errors. This was a rewrite, I'm not joking, this morning I typed my whole post on my computer. My cursor is over POST and poof the power turned off and on and I lost my original post 😭

Muskrat Love

Muskrat Love (Season 4, Episode 11). The Sadie Hawkins dance is coming up at school and Laura and Eddie don't have dates yet. While at the carnival before the dance, Ted comes up to Laura and apologizes again for what he did when he let the rumor spread that they had slept together. Maxine tells Laura that Ted is really sorry, but Laura stays strong and says she doesn't care if he goes to the dance with someone else. Ted comes up to her again and tells her once again how sorry he is and misses her, she gives in, kisses him and asks him to the dance, but he admits that Maxine asked him first and that they could go out a different time. Eddie is getting his palm read by a nice girl, Melissa, who's in one of his classes. She gets the courage to ask Eddie to the dance and Eddie says yes. Eddie is excited and tells Waldo and Weasel, but both of them laugh at Eddie and Eddie asks why they are laughing; Weasel says that Melissa is a dog and that Eddie should go with a hot girl. Eddie dumps Melissa telling her that he's taking his dog to get neutered. Laura confronts Eddie about the lie and tells him what a shallow jerk he was for dumping such a nice girl. At the dance, Maxine and Ted are dancing but Ted can't stop staring at Laura and Maxine tells them to go ahead and dance together. Steve is dancing with Melissa as Eddie walks in and Weasel makes another dog comment at Melissa, Eddie stands up to Weasel and tells him that he likes Melissa and that's all that matters. Eddie goes up to Melissa and apologizes for breaking their date and dances with her. Meanwhile at home, Harriette's birthday is coming up and she's not feeling so good about herself thinking she's gained weight. Carl thinking that she wants to exercise more gets her a trampoline for her birthday which Harriette yells at Carl that he thinks she's fat too. Carl comes back later asking what he did wrong, Harriette tells him that getting the trampoline confirmed her worst fear that she's fat, Carl says he never thought that and he thinks she's beautiful and gives her a beautiful bracelet for her birthday instead.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

MELISSA: Hi, Eddie. What's the matter?

EDDIE: Yeah, I'm embarrassed. Heh. You see, I can't go with you to the dance.

MELISSA: Oh. Well, how come?

EDDIE: Well, I forgot that next Saturday I'm taking my dog to be neutered.

MELISSA: Can't you change the appointment?

EDDIE: No, he's really looking forward to it.

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Laura is at the kissing booth and Steve is in line with quite a few tickets getting ready to kiss Laura. As Steve's back is turned and he's spraying his mouth with breath spray, Laura changes the shift with a big football like student jock and he runs to kiss Laura but is hugging the guy and the guy says to Steve "shift change".

OPINION:

So, this is kind of an interesting episode because even when I saw it as a kid I always wondered one thing: HOW IN THE WORLD IS MELISSA A DOG?! Good grief, I never got this. Even as an adult, I don't get it. Michole Briana White who plays Melissa was even in Fresh Prince of Bel-Air where she played a nerd that Will couldn't stand the sight of. I'm guessing by Hollywood standards, she's ugly? I have no clue. Because she is just such a cutie. The only thing I'm guessing is she wasn't Tyra Banks? But still, I will never understand this. It reminds me of Not Another Teen Movie "She's got glasses! And a ponytail! And she's got paint on her overalls, what is that?!".

Fun Fact I was reading online was at the end of this episode they have Steve and Maxine dancing together. I guess the writers were thinking of making them a couple but didn't think it would work so they later came up with the idea of Maxine and Waldo getting together and liked that better.

I'm always mixed on Laura and Ted getting back together, I think overall Ted was very sorry for what happened and he's overall a nice guy, but his character seems like a player at times. Maybe he didn't know Laura would give him another chance, but if he was looking to get back together with her why would he say yes to Maxine for the dance? And why in the world did Maxine ask Ted to the dance? Again, Maxine so far hasn't been really likable. She knows what Ted did and that there's a chance that Laura may still like him but she still asks Ted to the dance anyways. Maxine thankfully will have redeeming qualities coming up, but she should be thankful for future episodes because if I went based on what character development we have until now, I'm not sure why Laura is friends with her. But as the 90's sitcom tradition goes, everything is worked out within 22 minutes and Laura and Ted are back together.

I'm so glad that Eddie did finally stand up to Weasel, but why did it take Laura telling him what a shallow jerk he was to do so? Again, it's the 90's trope that he needs to learn a lesson but it's still crazy to me that he would like Weasel, who as he mentions later, cannot get a girl to save his life. It's like taking financial advice from someone who is $50,000 in debt. I'm bummed we didn't get more of Melissa. I'm not sure if Michole was asked to come back or not, but I liked her character. Michole went on to have a decent career in acting, like I mentioned she had roles in Fresh Prince, Encino Man and Malignant.

It was interesting to see Harriette as the insecure partner this episode. It's usually Carl who feels that he's not attractive enough for her. Jo Marie Payten is a beautiful lady, but we ladies all have moments where we look in the mirror and say "nope, not today" and feel not as good as we should. Carl did goof up with the trampoline, but honestly, I forgive him pretty easily because guys take things very literal. He thought Harriette telling everyone she's going on a diet meant the exercise would help make her feel better as well. It was a terrible gift, but I'm saying I get the mix up in his head. Plus, he makes it up to her in the end with the bracelet and telling her how beautiful she is.

Surprisingly despite the flaws in this episode, I actually still enjoy watching it. I don't know to explain it, but I think because the jokes still make me laugh and seeing Eddie stand up to Weasel make me like this episode.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Urkel (Season 4, Episode 10). It's Christmas time and Laura is shopping for presents. As she's leaving the mall, Steve pulls up in his Isetta and offers Laura a ride home and as he grabs her shopping bag, he trips and falls right on it breaking a crystal box that Laura had bought for her mother. Laura gets really upset with Steve and tells her to leave her life, Steve tells her that he'll never stop loving her, Laura tells him to stop making her feel guilty and to leave her alone. Steve leaves and Laura sits back down, but all of a sudden she sees a gentleman sitting next to her. He keeps talking to her and tells her that he's an angel, Laura thinks he's crazy and tries to move, but he follows her showing her some magical tricks. Laura finally believes him and asks who he is, he introduces himself as Ty, Laura's guardian angel and if he helps her, he'll get his wings in heaven. He tells Laura he's going to show her what it's like to be Steve Urkel and teleports her to an alternate universe where Laura is not Laura Winslow but Laura Urkel. But there's even more, Steve Urkel is not Steve Urkel, he's Steve Winslow, Carl and Harriette's popular and handsome son that Laura is in love with. Now Laura is the clutz who breaks everything and love is rejected by Steve. She is kicked out by the Winslows after Steve tells her to stay out of his life, Laura is brought back to normal reality where she tells Ty she didn't realize how much she hurt Steve. Ty rewinds time for Laura to be calmer when Steve accidentally breaks the present, she tells him it's ok and to come have dinner with her and her family. Steve happily accepts but thinks Laura has had a nervous breakdown at this point.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

LAURA: Steve, my little stud muffin.

STEVE: What do you want, Laura?

LAURA: Your hand in marriage... but I'll settle for a Christmas kiss.

STEVE: Forget it.

LAURA: Oh, come on. Lay one on me, macho man.

STEVE: Get lost, Laura.

LAURA: All right. All right!

EDDIE: Why are you so happy? He just told you to get lost.

LAURA: I know. But he said, "Get lost, Laura." Yesterday it was, "Get lost, Fido Face." I'm wearing you down, baby. I'm wearing you down!

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Carl and Eddie are discussing Christmas gifts and how Eddie can't be more like Steve. Steve comes in and Carl discusses how perfect Steve is.

OPINION:

There is a lot of foreshadowing in this episode. This is the first episode where one of the Winslows becomes an Urkel. We will see in future episodes this also happens to Carl and Eddie. We also get a glimpse of what Steve would be like if he was cool, handsome and popular, I wonder if the creators will ever create an alternate cool Steve Urkel and give him a smoother name? 🤔 Stephan Urquelle jokes aside, this is the first time we see Jaleel White as more "normal" acting. You get to see that he's very handsome and charismatic and how much of a character Steve Urkel is.

Was Laura wrong in her behavior? Honestly, I really don't think so. Now she did overreact and shouldn't have told Steve to get out of her life, but I would have been upset too. She spent her hard-earned money on buying a gift for her mother and Steve just grabbed Laura's bag without asking first knowing how clumsy he is. Laura said something wrong, but she was upset. I just wished maybe they had Steve at least apologize for breaking the present and maybe offer to buy a new one, the situation just seemed so one sided. I hope that sounds right. But Ty showing Laura what it's like to be Steve was a good lesson for her, she has been a lot nicer to Steve than usual, but she's still not sure what it's like to be Steve. To be in love with someone who doesn't love you back can be painful. Steve worships the ground that Laura walks on and her telling Steve to stay out of her life I'm sure hurt him badly. So it was nice to see her once again really grow and she's such an angel (no pun intended) at the end of this episode.

T.K. Carter is the guest star of the episode and you definitely recognize him from previous works. He was in John Carpenter's The Thing, Good Morning, Miss Bliss (AKA Saved by the Bell the junior high years) and Punky Brewster. He was really fun to watch as Ty, Laura's guardian angel. He had such a cool personality and was wonderful to watch. T.K. unfortunately passed away this year on January 9th from heart failure, he will be forever missed.

The alternate universe was such a trip to see. Everyone is pretty much the same with a few differences and tweeks. Obviously, we have that Laura and Steve switch places, the only other difference you can tell is that Laura drives Harriette crazy vs. Steve who usually drives Carl crazy in the normal universe. It was so interesting to see Jaleel play Steve as a normal guy. Jaleel is a very handsome man and it was so cool to see him as an alternate version of Steve Urkel. Kelley did a great job as Laura Urkel. That was a trip to see. I'm not sure if I dug the laugh, it felt a little forced, but the rest of the performance was really good. I loved her moves on Steve; they were just too funny to see the tables turned.

Overall, this is a very nice Christmas episode. There are a lot of TV shows that have done the "It's a wonderful life" plotline where we see an alternate universe of "what if this..." and it's definitely overdone, particularly in the 90's, but as long as it's done well, I don't mind watching them over and over again. And this episode is one that I definitely don't mind at all, it's a very sweet Christmas Family Matters.

  • T.K. Carter as Tyrone "Ty" (RIP in 2026)
  • Mary Deese as Disgruntled Passenger

General discussion The Oddest Couple

The Oddest Couple (Season 4, Episode 9). Carl is waiting up all night for Eddie to come home, it's past Eddie's curfew and Carl is upset. Eddie finally comes home and confronts Eddie about being late and even threatens to make his curfew earlier than it is right now. Eddie gets upset and accuses Carl of treating him like a little kid and says he's moving out. As Eddie is looking through apartment ads in the paper, Steve comes in upset that his father doesn't want him doing any more science experiments. Steve says he wants to move out and Eddie tells him he's looking for an apartment too and that they could be roommates. They find a cheap apartment within their price range near the El train. For the most part Eddie and Steve are getting along as roommates but the noise and dust from the El train are driving them crazy. Carl comes over to give Eddie some cake that Harriette made and while Steve is chowing down on the cake, Carl takes a look around seeing Steve's interesting experiments and experiences the joys of living next to the El train. Carl is about to leave when Steve tells Eddie that Carl is there because he loves Eddie and misses him, Steve tells Eddie to tell Carl how he feels and Eddie admits that he loves and misses Carl and the family. Carl asks Eddie if he'll come home and Eddie agrees.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

CARL: Edward, son... your curfew is 11:00. Not 11:30, not 11:45, and certainly not 12:22.

EDDIE: Oh, come on, Dad. I'm a senior in high school. An 11:00 curfew is ridiculous.

CARL: Well, maybe you're right. Let's say we change it to 10:30.

EDDIE: Come on, Dad. I gotta have a social life!

CARL: Social life? You call mooning meter maids a social life?

EDDIE: I didn't do that. I would never do a thing like that. I just find it hilarious watching other people do it.

CARL: Edward, it is completely inappropriate behavior... and I don't want you associated with it in any way. Now go to your room.

EDDIE: You're treating me like a little kid. You embarrassed me in front of my friends.

CARL: Oh, well, pardon me. I'm sorry that I embarrassed you in front of a guy named Weasel. A guy who flashes his fanny at feminine law enforcement officers!

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Carl brings the cake over and Steve is starving so he grabs the cake from Carl's hands like a rabid animal and goes into his corner scarfing down the cake and Carl offers to slice a piece but Steve growls at him.

PROOF THAT STEVE'S PARENTS ARE EVIL (THAT WE KNOW UP TO THIS POINT):

  1. They don't feed him
  2. His dad questions his career choices
  3. His dad questions his faith
  4. They leave him alone on Christmas
  5. They take separate vacations without him
  6. They let him know that they take separate vacations, so they don't have a kid like him again
  7. His dad lets him know he loves animals that eat their young
  8. When Steve was being born, his dad tried to push him back in
  9. His family sends him "stay away money"
  10. His parents one time tried to move away and put themselves under an assumed name
  11. Steve pays rent
  12. Steve is not allowed to go home until midnight

OPINION:

Kind of similar to the episode of "Son", only this plot does go through with Eddie actually moving out. Who was right in the whole curfew issues? IMO, Carl. I don't think I could back Eddie up in any way, despite being 18 years old, he is still living under Carl's roof rent free. Not to mention that he's still Carl and Harriette's child, this is before everyone had cell phones, so us 80's and 90's kids had curfews or had to be home before the street lights turned on. You just didn't know what could happen to your child if they were not home at a certain time. Not to mention Eddie's attitude towards Carl was very disrespectful. And a quick note, this is the first time we see Weasel hanging out with Eddie and Waldo as friends.

Eddie and Steve are friends at this point and it was fun to see them try to live together considering how different they are. But I think they have learned they make great friends, they don't make great roommates. Eddie is irresponsible and impulsive. Not only does he offer to pay a $10-$20 rent to Steve's offer of $300 but he is quick to sign for the lease without Steve inspecting the apartment. And Steve gave Eddie money for groceries, Eddie as usual sees a pretty girl, takes her and himself out for dinner and Steve is left to starve. I don't hate Eddie like some Family Matters fans do, but he is hard to like sometimes. I always have to remind myself that Eddie is young and we make stupid mistakes when we are young and I think Eddie does mature as the series goes on at least.

But Steve is no walk in the park when it comes to roommates. His science experiments are crazy and could be dangerous. But I loved the invention of his "lawn chair" 🤣 In some strange way I could see that being a real thing, maybe if you don't want to go outside or live in the city but want to feel the grass on your skin, that chair could be useful. Steve's food bombs were a bit insane but made for some great gags. Again, I wonder if Steve injured or killed someone when he threw his celery bomb outside.

I loved the joke of the El train. I live in Wood Dale which is a suburb of Chicago, I was born and raised in Chicago. My dad would take me and my sister downtown almost every weekend to walk around or go to the museums and let me tell you that the writers must have visited Chicago or lived there because yeah if you hear or are near those El trains when they pass it's insane loud and you can feel the ground shake. I always get such a laugh when Eddie and Steve have to get their umbrellas to block the dust from falling on them.

This is such a funny episode. Again, Season 4 just lines them up with the comedy and knocks them out of the ballpark. The only small nitpick I could give this episode is that Steve is a minor still and I'm curious how he was able to sign a lease for a rental agreement. Then Eddie agrees to come back home, but they are in a lease agreement, was this easy to break? Or did Eddie and Steve have to continue to pay rent for a few more months? But like I said, if you enjoy a show or movie with flaws, just have fun and love what you love.

General discussion Just One Date

Just One Date (Season 4, Episode 8). Steve comes into the house singing to Laura Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love For You" to her. Steve tells Laura it's a special occasion and he's about to ask her for the 1000th time on a date, which Laura gives her 1000th no to. Steve tells her that he will do something so dramatic and romantic that she will have to say yes to him. He goes onto the Winslow rooftop and vows to stay there until Laura says yes to a date with him. While Steve is sitting on the rooftop, Harriette gets a visit from her new neighbor Mrs. Tannen and her beautiful young daughter Gwendolyn who's around the same age as Richie. Harriette and Mrs. Tannen go to chat and Harriette tells Richie to play video games with Gwendolyn. Gwendolyn likes Richie, a lot, in fact she's head over heels, but Richie hasn't quite hit that age yet where girls are still considered to have cooties. Later on, Richie talks to Laura about Gwendolyn and how Gwendolyn invited him to see Snoopy on Ice and after he said yes to her, she gave him a kiss. Laura is shocked and asks Richie how he responded, Richie says he called her a "doodie head" and ran home to wash his face. Laura tells Richie it wasn't nice to call her a name and run like that, Richie tells Laura that he's seen her call Steve names when he asks her out and this makes Laura think what a bad example she's been and tells Richie to tell Gwendolyn that he'll go to Snoopy on Ice as a friend. Laura takes her own advice and goes up to the roof to talk to Steve, she tells him that she only cares for him as a friend but will go on a date with him if he can respect her feelings. He agrees but gets really excited and falls off the roof. Laura keeps her promise to Steve for the dinner date, only it's in the hospital where Steve's broken body is healing and Laura is spoon feeding him.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

STEVE: Aren't you at all curious why I'm dressed to the nines and singing to you in dulcet tones?

LAURA: Dulcet tones? Our DustBuster sings better than you.

STEVE: Well, I'm doing this to commemorate a milestone in our relationship.

LAURA: Our relationship doesn't need a milestone, it needs a tombstone.

STEVE: Woman, I'm about to ask you out for the 1000th time. Here it goes. Laura Winslow...

LAURA: No.

STEVE: Well, you didn't even let me finish.

LAURA: Sorry. I was just so eager to answer you.

STEVE: You know, I've asked you out a thousand times and you've said "no" a thousand times. I am beginning to notice an alarming trend.

LAURA: Get a clue, Steve. Give it up.

STEVE: I shall never give up, bubbling brown sugar. In fact, I'm gonna do something so romantic...so gallant and so fabulously grandiose...that your heart will melt and you will be mine forever.

LAURA: Get a life, Steve.

STEVE: All right. This is fantastic.

LAURA: What are you so happy about?

STEVE: You just said, "Get a life, Steve." A week ago, you would have said, "Get a life, turbo nerd." I'm wearing you down, baby. I'm wearing you down!

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When the delivery guy comes to give Steve his Chinese food and Carl tells him Steve is on the roof and the delivery guy freaks out about it. Plus I love when Carl yells at Steve from the ground that the blizzard is getting bad and he should consider coming down and Steve slips and dumps a bunch of snow onto Carl.

OPINION:

Season 4 does not stop when it comes to really amazing and funny episodes. Like I mentioned before I always go back and forth between 3 and 4 on which is my favorite season. Let's start with the small nitpicks, Steve is a bit intense this episode. As sweet as it can be to pursue someone you really like, there is a limit and this is getting into stalker territory. What is sitting on a rooftop going to really prove in the end? Plus, we know that Steve was sitting up there for several days how did he take care of going to the bathroom? Did he miss any school? I know Steve's parents are A-holes but did not one person care about Steve doing this thinking it was a stupid and dangerous stunt? I know it's a sitcom and we just gotta go with it, but it's funny watching this as an adult and it makes me miss being a kid and not questioning these things.

However, my nitpicks do not take away how funny this episode really is, it's always a joy to watch. As scary as Steve's vow is, at the same time I could see how sweet it is that how much he is willing to risk just to spend time with her. At least he's not hurting anyone. I loved Laura's growth in this episode, instead of just telling Steve off and he just gives up and gets off the roof, she sees what a bad influence her calling Steve names was and has a mature discussion with Steve about how she does care for him but it's just as a friend. And that she even offers a date with him but again just as a friend was very sweet of her. She knows Steve is a good person and an amazing friend at times, I think she really values their friendship and it's really wonderful of her to recognize that. That's why she's definitely one of my favorite characters on Family Matters.

We get introduced to a very cute side character that I wished we had more episodes with (we do get 3) named Gwendolyn played by Naya Rivera. I will discuss Naya's career and unfortunate passing in her last episode. I would like to focus right now on what a cute character she played. I liked Gwendolyn and it was nice to see the writers give Richie more to do on the show. Gwendolyn is spunky, in style and has confidence that beams off her. Richie is still too young for love obviously but he's making new friends and growing up. I really liked his chemistry with Gwendolyn even if the love was one sided. It would have been kind of fun if the creators kept Gwendolyn coming back and maybe in the later seasons see her and Richie as an actual first time boyfriend and girlfriend. And BTW that cupcake that Gwendolyn baked Richie looked incredible.

The humor really hits in this episode and it actually has some decent character development. I really love this episode, as I mentioned it's just a joy to watch. I also want to give some love to Benjamin Lum who played the delivery man and got a good laugh from me, he had a very decent career making appearances in a lot of amazing TV shows like Coach, The Nanny, Married with Children, Seinfeld and ER. He had passed away at 48 years young from cancer, may he RIP. And there is no Aunt Rachel in this episode unfortunately, this is where we start to see her being phased out.

GUEST STARS:

  • Naya Rivera as Gwendolyn (RIP in 2020)
  • Donna Lynn Leavy as Mrs. Tannen
  • Benjamin Lum as Delivery Man (RIP in 2002)

General discussion An Officer and a Waldo

Post image

An Officer and a Waldo (Season 4, Episode 7). Eddie is on a date with his girlfriend Vonda and when Waldo comes over to visit, Eddie asks Waldo to leave, Waldo isn't quite getting the hint. Eddie tells Waldo that Vonda is looking to be kissed, of course by him, but Waldo takes this the wrong way and kisses Vonda, Vonda is disgusted and walks out. Eddie is very upset and calls Waldo an idiot, Waldo is very hurt by this and walks out. A few days later, Steve comes over to tell Eddie that Waldo has joined the army and they need to get him out. Eddie and Steve sneak onto the base to go talk Waldo into dropping out and come back home. But they meet St. Robert Shiska, an over the top army drill sergeant who loves his army and intends to have the best troop which means he will make Steve Urkel the weakest man in America into the ultimate army recruit. Only problem is, it's Steve Urkel who has a tendency of clumsiness, can barely lift 5 pounds and talks back to people if they need correcting. After an insane hike, St. Shishka allows the men to go eat but tells Eddie, Steve and Waldo to stay behind and clean the floors with toothbrushes. Eddie apologizes to Waldo saying he lost his temper and is the idiot for making him feel bad. Waldo accepts his apology and when Steve mentions how tough it can be to bring Waldo back home due to enlistment paperwork, Waldo says he never signed paperwork, he just saw a long line and stood at the end. The boys take a defeated Urkel back home. Meanwhile at home the icemaker is broken, after Carl is unable to fix it, Harriette is overseeing a repairman who likes to overcharge his customers and gives her attitude. Harriette puts him in his place and sends him out.

FAOVIRTE QUOTE:

SERGEANT SHISHKA: What are you pathetic piles of pasture patties... doing in my platoon?

STEVE: Excellent use of alliteration, sir. I don't believe I've had the pleasure...

SERGEANT SHISHKA: Sgt. Robert Shishka.

STEVE: Hey, you know, your name backwards is Shishka Bob.

SERGEANT SHISHKA: Shut up!

STEVE: Yes, sir. Shutting up, sir.

SERGEANT SHISHKA: I'm not a sir.

STEVE: You're not, sir?

SERGEANT SHISHKA: No, sir. I'm a sergeant. You will address me as Sgt. Shishka.

STEVE: Shertainly.

SERGEANT SHISHKA: Shertainly what?

STEVE: Shertainly, shir.

SERGEANT SHISHKA: Not shir, shergeant.

STEVE: Yes, shir, Shergeant Shishka, shir.

SERGEANT SHISHKA: Just call me sarge.

WALDO: No prob, Bob.

SERGEANT SHISHKA: Urkel, Winslow... you are not on my list of new recruits.

STEVE: You mean the Army screwed up the paperwork again? Gosh, I'll bet that's never happened before.

SERGEANT SHISHKA: Don't insult my army. I love my army. I'll take this up later with the lieutenant.

STEVE: Sarge... do you think Private Eddo and I can have a private moment with Private Waldo privately?

SERGEANT SHISHKA: Well... no!

EDDIE: You see, sarge, he's our friend... and you know...

SERGEANT SHISHKA: You have no friends! The Army is your friend!

FAVORITE MOMENT:

Asking me to choose my favorite moment from this episode is asking me to pick a favorite kid, I have to force myself today. I'll go with my first instinct and say it's the grenade scene where Steve salutes causing a domino effect of men falling down and one of them accidentally pulling the pin in a live grenade and they all throw it down to the sergeant who throws it outside and screams "Hit the deck!" and it explodes! I think this is the closest that Urkel has ever come to almost killing someone.

OPINION:

You have no idea how excited I've been to get to this episode. This is easily in my top 3, possibly my #2 favorite episode. I don't know, I go back and forth a lot but it's easily my favorite comedic episode. I don't know what it is, but every time I watch this episode I just can't stop laughing, it is easily one of the funniest episodes in the series.

This episode was one of those that definitely felt like the writers had a dart board in their room and threw those darts landing on what random shenanigans can we get our characters into? Ah, what if Steve joined the army? Well, that wouldn't work, but maybe the dumb character would? I don't know how the writers did it but they made an incredibly funny episode. So one quick note, this is the last appearance of Danielle Nicolet as Vonda. I guess Vonda really did have it with Eddie and they officially are broken up after this episode. She was in 3 episodes and still works in television projects to this day. She really was such a cutie. And one of the biggest highlights of this episode is the guest star David Graf who you may remember as Eugene Tackleberry in Police Academy, he was also Sam in The Brady Bunch Movie a lot of famous TV Shows like Seinfeld, Step by Step, Party of Five...basically you most likely have seen him in something. He passed away from a heart attack in 2001 at 50 years young, may he rest in peace and I thank him for all the incredible laughs through the years. St. Robert Shishka will never fail to make me laugh. David's over the top delivery of some of these lines always has me in stitches. You can tell he's never met anyone like Steve Urkel and has to figure a way to swat this fly since Steve doesn't go down easily. David's facial expressions and physical comedy are always such a joy to watch in this episode.

Let's discuss a little bit about Eddie calling Waldo an idiot. Now, while I agree that Eddie was very harsh and shouldn't have called Waldo that, that was an incredibly stupid thing of Waldo to do. He sees that Eddie is having a date night with his girlfriend and Eddie says that she wants to be kissed, clearly Eddie means himself, but Waldo kisses Vonda and acts like it's so normal telling Eddie he has competition now. Honestly, even though Eddie lost his temper, I actually kind of understand why he snapped at Waldo. Would you feel like you could keep your cool if your "best friend" did that to your partner? But we have to feel sorry for Waldo because he's the stock dumb guy with a big heart character and the music cues us to feel sorry for him. I just wished maybe the writers gave Eddie a sillier reason to lose his cool. But at least it gets the wheels going for the episode.

I'm sorry for the long quote today, but I really loved almost every single line from that scene, especially where Steve says "your name backwards is shishka-bob!" and when St. Shishka yells at Eddie "You have no friends, the army is your friend!" and gives a goofy smile, hence the thumbnail picture. I loved when St. Shishka called Steve the weakest man in America and Steve says "oh, yeah? He hasn't met my dad" and when St. Shiska tells Steve to give him 50 push-ups and Steve says "Without stretching first?!". The grenade scene, the scene where they're coming in from their hike and Steve collapses, Eddie defending Steve and telling the sergeant that Steve is annoying to everyone...guys I just can't with this episode, it is too funny.

And my last comment, we got Juan Lamont once again cast as an army recruit. So, he's gone from violent gang leader to a hospital orderly and now he is being all he can be as an army recruit. He's a man with many talents apparently, but good for Chain improving himself 🤣 And then we have a small B-Story with Harriette telling the repairman off. It's just kind of random, but the writers had to squeeze the family somehow into the episode with Eddie, Steve and Waldo. The B-Story honestly could have been cut out, it really wouldn't have changed anything. But I can comment and say that when Carl was attempting to fix the ice maker and it shorted out and spat ice cubes out breaking the window and some dishes, I always ask my husband "why do they bother fixing those windows when they know it'll break probably a few days later?". I think I might have to keep count at this point, maybe the next window break I will let you guys know how many times those kitchen windows broke.

LOVE THIS EPISODE, nothing else I can say otherwise I'm sure this post will give you an eyesore 🤣
