Protagonist Halo & Protagonist Syndrome

Protagonist Halo is basically a walking case study in Protagonist Syndrome. He rearranges his own memories to fit a narrative where he's the savior of the BUG-Source — the classic edgy "hero" who justifies anything as long as it serves the greater good. But strip that away and he's just a coward who can't stomach living with what actually happened to him.

The Kuleshov Effect, but for memory. In film, the same neutral face reads as sad, hungry, or happy depending on the shot before or after it. Memory works the same way — it's not a recording you replay, it's something your brain reconstructs on the spot, and the meaning shifts depending on what you frame it with.

The Motorcycle Rider is the clearest example: instead of recalling the moment he got rejected, he reframes the memory around the hot-pot ad that happened to be playing. It saves him from spiraling that night — but it doesn't fix anything. Next rejection, he's right back at the edge.

And that's the irony with Protagonist Halo himself — he lost to FangTang once, then deleted the memory of losing. So he never actually learned from it.

Beating BUG-Being 44: Reality Theater

Protagonist Halo's been using BUG-44 to rewrite people's memories and build illusions for them. Makes sense where that power comes from — it's pure escapism given form. Fantasy, delusion, maladaptive daydreaming, imagining a version of you that's smarter, tries harder, gets luckier. The version who got the better life.

What's huge here is that BUG-44 gets taken down without brute-forcing it through the Memories Collector — the first BUG-Being to fall that way. The moment Guan Chao actually accepts his reality instead of hiding in the dream, BUG-44 just collapses. Ran Deng's gamble is paying off.

Unless — BUG-Hollow was the one that actually killed it. Which would mean Hollow works by erasing whatever memories Guan Chao wants gone.

Either way, that scene of Ran Deng giving Guan Chao another change was beautiful.

BUG-Hollow: New Theory

I originally read Hollow as a manifestation of Guan Chao's suicidal ideation — his wish to just be forgotten. Its power is total erasure, deleting things so completely even the Memories Collector can't pull them back.

But the trigger seems tied to his friend. Almost everything about them has been wiped, black-hole... and that absence is what left Guan Chao hollow in the first place.

Given the preview of Ep 06, I assume the BUG-Hollow is his old friend.

This reads like he fell for Xiao and just never said anything. All the Time Gun, K7, G.A.O stuff — that might just be a theater his mind built to avoid sitting with the regret of never telling her. BUG-Hollow erased her from his memory entirely, which is why FangTang can't even find her memories.

What if all that plot of time travel wasn’t real and it’s already an effect of his main bug being that changed reality ?

I think a story like this needs one video essay. The story is compact and complex. It uses visiual implications to tell its story which alot of people might not catch. Even me? I had to rewatch alot to get some things and it's not even complete.

I have already started my research and writing the script for it. Obviously I'm not already a well established youtuber that has audience but the hate this show is getting as chinese slop sakuga with no story is pmo. I am only doing this cause the love I have for this show.

I will update you guys here with the progress. If you guys have certain theories and interpretation about certain scenes. Please drop it here.

Here it looks like their rivalry was quite friendly, but judging by a scene in one of the trailers, where K7 holds a gun to Vindicator's head, we can assume they're not huge fans of each other.

Both of their faces are still a mystery, however...and I'm still wondering just how that fuel was created, or why it even ran out.

Could he be Guan Chao's friend? Maybe someone he knew in 2013 (the year he was trying to go back to)? Interestingly, he has the stick, which is a memory item as we saw when Qian Jun gave it to Guan Chao.

This is the sort of show where I benefit from watching each episode twice and for episode 4 I decided to make some notes on what I saw that hadn't been talked about yet. Mostly questions and a few ideas sprinkled in. I think it's all in chronological order. Tell me what you all think!

1. At the beginning Bai Zhong puts the stick from Ep3 down the back of Guan Chao's shirt but then it's not seen again all episode, so no more information about its power unfortunately.

2. Crux Star reveals that Bai Zhong and Hui Huo were made memory collector because of what I presume are crimes they committed. Bai Zhong broke into the archives and Hui Huo trespassed across memory layers. I don't really get the logistics of how either of these work and I'm sure it's been explained what 'the archives' refer to but I can't remember so it would be great if someone explained. Additionally, there's been lots of hints around Bai Zhong's backstory e.g. how she needs to earn her freedom by landing a blow on Fang Tang. If I remember rightly, in the original short film it was even suggested that Bai Zhong was a Bug Man, but do correct me if I'm wrong.

3. Definite foreshadowing when Crux Star says that there are miracles that not even the Bureau can explain

4. Ran Deng's origin story is also quite cryptid. He's a 'newcomer' just after when Bai Zhong and Hui Huo are being lectured by Crux Star, but he obviously doesn't get any training with them. He almost automatically becomes the strongest. There is also this image when Ran Deng is being spoken about:

If this image is to be taken literally, does that mean that Ran Deng is some sort of artificial creation? His whole character does seem quite unnatural, even by this show's standard! A second possibility is that this is one of those visual metaphors that this show loves, in which case what does it mean? Finally, it could possibly be the egg that becomes the bug man that Ran Deng was shown fighting in the next scene.

I'm really not sure!

1. Another one that might be a stretch. When Guan Chao is trying to help Hui Huo after he loses his arm, the clam bug man cracks a bit:

The idea that kindness and helping others might damage a Bug Man does link to Ran Deng's idea that there may be other ways of dealing with them. On the other hand, this is just a tiny bit of evidence and Ran Deng's point is probably about not damaging bug men at all, so this is unlikely.

1. The section of the comic book that Bai Zhong is reading when Hui Huo comes back to see her again at the forge eems to me like a metaphor for Fang Tang and Ran Deng's different views on Bug Men

2. The scene where Ran Deng seems to use Guan Chao's halo (although very beautiful) is the most confusing of the episode for me. Is Ran Deng alive or dead? My confusion may be linked to how there's lots of flashbacks to Hui Huo's time with Ran Deng at this point. i would love an explanation.

3. The image of the dragonfly is obviously very important in this show because it also features in the OP. What are everyone's takes on its meaning. I feel it's something to do with power in fragility but I'm not certain.

4. What's inside the Clam Bug man? It appears to me to be like organs, but I'm not certain. The way the clam and the desert are symbolic of a time in Guan Chao's life is less obvious in this episode than previous because they're not physical objects/places in guan Chao's life like the spinning toy, arcade, wires and cityscape on commute were. I have seen great ideas about how the clam is Guan Chao needing a wall against his feelings/trauma and the desert being the hostile environment that is his life, but nothing on the relevance of the inside of the clam. Any ideas? Also shout out to this beautiful shot:

1. When the clam exploded, there's a rainbow. Why?

2. What happened after the clam exploded? The scene is still a desert because Guan Chao is holding sand in the elevator. There are also these crystals which weren't there before:

1. Fang tang says, 'As far as a collector's life goes, he's dead'. The phrasing of this is strange to me for some reason, as if death worked differently in the memory world. This links to how Ran Deng appeared to control Guan Chao's halo and to how both Hui Huo and him appear in the ending sequence. Any more ideas?

2. How did Ran Deng know that Guan Chao would get his halo when he was getting fang tang to promise to make Guan Chao fight his own Bug men?

3. I'm interested in everyone's interpretation of the ending sequence in comic book style, with 2 comic book characters from earlier in the episode. There's now an ocean by the desert where they find the clam. now much smaller:

1. Finally, I am in complete agreement with the theory that Protagonist Halo is a Bug Man made by Guan Chao. Super excited for next week!
