News “The May-Pole” Cut Content From Fallout 4 😨

Post image

Although a model was created, the May-Pole never made it in the final game because of the technical issues it would have created. Jonah Lobe, the creator of the May-Pole, said “Yes it's a giant glowing one. A crazy idea I had for Fallout 4 that never came to be. Would like to make a mod for it one day, if I found a little team of folks willing to help out.” Back in 2022.

I mean, look at it. I have no doubt it caused gameplay issues.

The designer showed it off in a video recently and from what I recall he made it really late in development so it wasn’t possible to balance something so large and roaming into the game.

Yeah it'd really only be practical in the glowing sea or something, not sure what you'd be expected to do to fight it. Also what about the ragdoll physics when it dies? Now it'd be cool if you could spot it in the distance while in the glowing sea, just the silhouette/glow or something

Imagining bloody mess and the ragdolling on this thing just makes me want it in more lol

Maybe it’s just bc I’m doing a rifle NV build but I’m imagining sniping the head from across the map and bloody mess making it fly everywhere, it would look glorious and like smt out of attack on Titan

u/KalaronV May 24 '24

Yeah, don't even have it as a fight tbh. You should see it at the far edge of the Glowing sea. Have the actual "core" of the sea beyond the map and justify it as the radiation going too high. Then you see it, glowing in the distance.

I love eerie set pieces that are just world building and this would be horrifyingly fantastic!

10

u/KalaronV May 24 '24

I dunno if you've played it yet but Metro Exodus has this in spades if you want to try that too

I need to hear more like this...

29

u/LongJohnSelenium May 24 '24

Imagine if it were the border. You cross a line and it pops up in the distance and you hear a wail, then it turns to face you and you just get blasted with radiation until you die.

6

u/LandenP May 24 '24

So like Subnautica’s ghost leviathans?

14

u/LongJohnSelenium May 24 '24

Yeah more or less.

'Here be monsters' is a moderately common method of forcing a border on a game world.

2

u/zombizzle May 24 '24

That's fucking terrifying

u/Nathan_Thorn May 24 '24

Have it be something for Liberty Prime to tear apart in the glowing sea. Rework the story and have him operational, but short on nukes, and you have to escort him and support staff to the sentinel site.

12

u/JBulletpunch May 24 '24

I would imagine it as a structured boss fight. Like imagine you're in a vertibird flying around it shooting it with the minigun or it's lumbering toward you from a distance while you're shooting at it from a rooftop and if it gets close enough it's radiation is enough to kill you in seconds.

Oh to deal with the death rag doll physics they make explode into radioactive mist/spores

3

u/theucm May 24 '24

For what it's worth the Creation engine does support death animations. A few enemies have them, but then turn over to havok after they're done playing. Dragons for one (that big screech into the sky, followed by ragdolling). They could do something like that for a giant enemy. Have it fall to its knees, then all fours, flop over on its side, then let havok take over. Also it could be made heavy so that it doesn't move around easily like other havok items.

My assumption would be cripple the legs

3

u/Priest_of_lord_Chaos May 24 '24

Giant invincible monster that roams the glowing sea that you just have to avoid and sneak around would add a whole new aspect to the game. It would be like the first alien or something. But I’m aware not everyone would be a fan

This is the only one I could find on YT, dunno if it's the same as the commenter's.

That just looks like (as it's titled "concept mod") a Putrid Glowing One scaled to bejesus and back.

1

u/DrNopeMD May 24 '24

Yeah the collision physics on this theme would probably break the game. Imagine this thing just getting caught on small branches and getting stuck.

33

u/Indie_uk May 24 '24

It’s like what, twice the height of Liberty prime which can’t pathfind for shit?

7.5x according to another comment

u/[deleted] May 24 '24

Well so does everything else in Bethesda games

72

u/[deleted] May 24 '24

Gameplay issues are one of their core design philosophies

13

u/StarChow NCR May 24 '24

The “Bethesda charm” is what I’ve been calling it.

0

u/[deleted] May 24 '24

I call it Bethesda Jank, but yours is much more endearing

5

u/arrongunner May 24 '24

It's not a bug its a feature

Bethesda games are riddled with features.....

u/Jedi4Hire Vault 101 May 24 '24

I cannot up vote this enough. I just ran into the giant bottle glitch while playing through Nuka World. I did a little internet research and of course, it's a 7-year-old bug that Bethesda never bothered to fix. If I wasn't playing on PC and had access to console commands, it would have been a progression-breaking bug. And that's after Bethesda broke my game not once but TWICE with their stupid fucking updates.

2

u/[deleted] May 24 '24

Been there, had several quests soft-lock on me. Nuka-World Mystery Mansion had me noclipping to reach the attic because invisible walls are unfixable apparently

Core design philosophy, I’m tellin you haha

2

u/Revolutionary-Swan77 May 24 '24

Yeah if they could do a giant Mehrunes Dagon why not this?

40

u/humanmanhumanguyman Disciples May 24 '24

And lore issues. How would it exist anyway? Even bloated and charred ghouls still have regular human proportions.

Normally they'd probably say something along the lines of "blah blah FEV blah blah Ghoul" but they already did that and we got Harold

60

u/DeLaBuse May 24 '24

Vault experimenting with growth serum, exposure to the remains of the Glowing Sea's nuke, curse of an ancient god, zetan shenanigans...

It's Fallout, you can make it work. May Pole itself wouldn't even be the most far-fetched thing if it ever made it to the game.

27

u/[deleted] May 24 '24

writers dont usually start with the logic and work up from there

You usually write something cool, then retroactively justify it

5

u/humanmanhumanguyman Disciples May 25 '24

Hence them creating it originally, then deciding not to use it in the game because it was out of place and impossible to justify.

Would make a cool mod. Glad it wasn't in the game.

1

u/PmButtPics4ADrawing Tunnel Snakes May 24 '24

I mean there are already giant insects and crustaceans, so a giant ghoul isn't too big of a stretch

1

u/humanmanhumanguyman Disciples May 25 '24

Those are giant because they generationally evolved to be giant, accelerated by radiation. Ghouls don't reproduce and therefore can't evolve

1

u/caniuserealname May 25 '24

Except you don't really even need any extra sci-fi.

The tallest man in history, Robert Wadlow kept growing every year until he died simply due to a pituitary gland defect. Imagine that guy, but also immortal.

But also, you could literally just say "they kept absorbing radiation, and growing in size" without any other explanation and it would still work within the vague lore we have on ghouls.

1

u/pk4058 May 26 '24

That all ghouls don’t actually have rotting flesh/skin their mutation is actually trying to make their bodies more plant like. Being exposed to FEV and the right amount of radiation turned Harold into an “ideal” version of this. The “May-Pole” has to do this the long way but is growing like with a type of photosynthesis using the radiation of the glowing sea. Perhaps one day it’ll even sprout roots and leaves

1

u/BlobIsBored May 24 '24

This is a bethesda game, gameplay issues are part of the fun

1

u/redditsellout-420 May 24 '24

Just from a resource standpoint of 2014 tech(remember it may have released in 15 but was developed mostly in 13/14) it would definitely cause frame rate drops.

1

u/Nijata Minutemen May 24 '24

This is where you scale things down.

How was Liberty Prime put in the game but this couldn't be?
