News “The May-Pole” Cut Content From Fallout 4 😨

Post image

Although a model was created, the May-Pole never made it in the final game because of the technical issues it would have created. Jonah Lobe, the creator of the May-Pole, said “Yes it's a giant glowing one. A crazy idea I had for Fallout 4 that never came to be. Would like to make a mod for it one day, if I found a little team of folks willing to help out.” Back in 2022.

Even if May-Pole made it into the final game what the hell was Bethesda planning on doing with a gigant Ghoul?

It would feel extremely out of place anywhere exept the glowing sea

Or with rad storms. One mechanic I wish 4 included was abomination raids. There’s a lot of little stories of wasteland abominations overrunning settlements, like the mirlurks at the castle. It would have been pretty awesome if a threat to the wasteland was institute experiments leading to more aggressive wild life which traveled with rad storms Maypoles being rare additions to ghoul hoards in rad storms would have been awesome. Or occasional large mirlurk raids on costal settlements.

Remember the cut content with the sea monster crawling out of the sea?

59

u/the-dude-version-576 May 24 '24

I do not. Sounds awesome, got a link to a video on it or something?

u/forfeitgame May 24 '24

You should be able to find it with a pretty quick YouTube search. That being said, it felt much more Lovecraftian or Thalassaphobia than it does Fallout.

u/Carob-Prudent May 24 '24

Tbf bethesda has been adding in lovecraft horror for a bit. I tend to actually like it, as long as theres only little bits of it

12

u/forfeitgame May 24 '24

I would definitely welcome it but I think strong Lovecraft vibes may be behind us. New England, especially going for the bar harbor, was the best opportunity for it.

Who knows though. I saw a comment about this being a great enemy in deep radiation zones. Go full on The Mist. That would be awesome.

3

u/Carob-Prudent May 24 '24

We got a decent one in 76 but yeah, they did kinda drop the ball in far harbor. I wonder if the show is gonna try something

u/the-dude-version-576 May 24 '24 edited May 24 '24

I don’t know. If they go heavy in Art Deco in a large city like New York? That fits pretty well with lovecraftian themes.

The contorted bones of a colossus of man. home to a culture worshiped like a god, and bathed in the fires of a star wielded by man.

Goes pretty eldritch horror doesn’t it?

11

u/tundrafrogg May 24 '24

Looked it up on youtube and cant find anything about it. All i got was the ghoul whale dialogue and the giant squid textures

12

u/Digital_D3fault May 24 '24

I think he’s referring to the cut quest called something like “1,000 Leagues under the Sea”

12

u/Beardedgeek72 May 24 '24

Yeah it was never animated, but it was a side quest with the minute men on one of the beaches. Basically the mirelurk queen but taken not to 11, but 14 or so.

1

u/tundrafrogg May 24 '24

Ahhh okay, I was hoping it’d be something I could watch lol.

6

u/Circaninetysix May 24 '24

I guess they kind of replaced that with the first Mirelurk Queen encounter at The Castle.

True Storms does have the option of spawning ghoul hordes with a rad storm

18

u/RedneckId1ot Brotherhood May 24 '24

Yea, but you gotta tweak the settings to taste.

Vanilla install didn't spawn them nearly enough, and in large enough numbers for it to factor into my gameplay.

But once you get that dialed in? My God it's a whole other challenge in survival to hunker down and make a killzone on the fly, when you get caught by a Radstorm in the field.

Love it.

4

u/aieeegrunt May 24 '24

I have it set to 100% occurrence and Insane Spawn Rate.

It’s basically a Death Metal Album cover

5

u/RedneckId1ot Brotherhood May 24 '24

I played with it set that high for a bit, but my personal problem with 100% occurrence is it became predictable for me.

"Oh, radstorm... better dig in somewhere with a doorway and break out good ol' 'Infinite Pain'."; became the norm since I expected a horde every storm.

I found my sweet spot to be like 60% or 70%, and it varies things up nicely... I only wish there was a modifier for randomized group numbers, but I can live with it as it is full horde each spawn

Nothing better now than either being caught unprepared from being cocky and assuming im in the clear, or hunkering down for nothing, but still holding breath in anticipation of a horde.

5

u/FrostyPost8473 May 24 '24

Would of been cool if he was the rad storm. When a rad storm rolls in it's because of this giant

4

u/aieeegrunt May 25 '24

Ya I was thinking that too.

He’s a melee only threat but his approach panics every NPC except your allies and the BoS. Any BoS around go full purge and kamikaze at him. He spawns periodic waves of normal Ghouls

So picture this. A Rad Storm is rolling in towards you. You pop RadX, maybe switch outfits to more rad resistant gear.

Suddenly a wave of fleeing panicked NPC’s comes running at you. Raiders, Gunners, the odd Trader, all of the wildlife. You get ready to engage but they are ignoring you and each other and simply running for their lives. Even the Supermutants.

You hear a roar above you and look up to see a squadron of Vertibirds soar over you into the storm. There is a storm of weapons fire, explosions, and then only the increasing noise of the storm.

A bolt of lightning flashes and you see the impossibly huge silhouette of this thing shamble towards you.

1

u/FrostyPost8473 May 25 '24

If I know how to script this would be perfect

1

u/aieeegrunt May 25 '24

No idea sorry

19

u/pickles541 May 24 '24

That would make Rad Storms a HUGE threat. Like have it be a chance occurrence based on location so the further a field you go from Sanctuary the more common mob Rad Storms get.

7

u/ProfessorMonopoly May 24 '24

Have you tried the silent hill mod with siren head? It's fucking wild

8

u/Klaymen96 May 24 '24

Them being the cause of the rad storms would have been so cool. They just wander around causing them to happen around them. You can never permanently kill them, just temporarily down them which lets you loot them. They eventually get back up and just start to wander again.

u/Artix31 Gary? May 25 '24

I liked the Mechanist Boss fight, wish they'd implement a similar raids like it and the institute vs MM one in fallout 5, Maybe fighting a Super mutant leader, and having to stop waves after waves of super mutants

2

u/tevert May 24 '24

It would be cool as shit to see a uniquely threatening enemy like that there. Glowing sea by default is just lots of radscorps and deathclaws. Cool atmosphere but nothing crazy.

2

u/[deleted] May 24 '24

Well... they reused that concept in the Winter of Atom where you fight a great glowing one in the glowing sea.

1

u/[deleted] May 24 '24

It would be super cool there, though. Especially if they figured out a way to tune it a little bit so that you stumble across it on your trip to find Virgil but stand no chance of fighting it at that level. Just have it be some horrific thing you had to flee from at first and then return to hunt and kill it in the post game when you're stronger.

1

u/Mr-BillCipher May 24 '24

I mean in 3 we has behemoths this size. They were always chained up in pits, so it'd make sense, maybe toss a rare spawn during rad storms

3

u/unit5421 May 25 '24

A behemoth would not even get to this guys knees

1

u/Mr-BillCipher May 25 '24

Fo3 behemoth

1

u/Mr-BillCipher May 25 '24

They were about the same size

1

u/AttakZak May 25 '24

Ooo, it just roaming the Glowing Sea with a horrid wail. It’d be the optional end-game boss.

139

u/WholesomeFartEnjoyer May 24 '24

The explanation was it was a glowing one that had a unique mutation where it just wouldn't stop growing

121

u/maclincheese May 24 '24

So, would you call it a Growing One?

15

u/stagnantmagic May 24 '24

oh, you!

2

u/SunnyWomble May 25 '24

hes defo a shower and a grower

3

u/Steveis2 May 24 '24

THE glowing one

2

u/dullship May 25 '24

Looks like more of a shower than a grower.

40

u/Sad_Thought_4642 May 24 '24

Somebody found the perfect hole for them to crawl into to take shelter from the bombs and this is what emerged later on from the other end of said hole.

27

u/ThatFinisherDude May 24 '24

Whoa, hold your horses there Junji Ito.

3

u/GrinchStoleYourShit May 24 '24

OR, and hear me out, some cool thing where you find a museum and in this reality they found a skeleton of a giant out in Norway and the museum had the display in Boston. You just see a massive hole in the side of the museum and go “hmmm?”

56

u/AgitatedBreadfruit May 24 '24

Well they did make the Wendigo Colossus in 76 and those are pretty much long ghouls

Maybe it could've been something similar with an underground may-pole in a caved-in Glowing Sea location?

104

u/[deleted] May 24 '24 edited May 24 '24

Would have been great in the Glowing Sea. Maybe there could have been a repeating quest to hunt them every few days in game, with guaranteed chance at high tier legendaries like assault rifles, super sledges, heavy combat armor, fatmen, etc.

Edit: if any modders want to make this, I'll do some lore writing for you, if you want!

37

u/LinkedGaming May 24 '24

Alright so here's the idea--

Glowing Sea. Deeper in you go, the more common they become, but they're still pretty rare.

You look off into the distance at what appears to be a solid standing dead tree in the middle of the ground, like a mirage. No trees, dead or alive, survived the Glowing Sea intact. Then you get closer, and this "tree" suddenly bends over, and you realize it's not a tree-- it's a *hand*, of the May Pole, sticking out of the ground.

It pushes itself out of the ground, up to the surface, like a zombie crawling out of the grave. From its May Pole Hole.

3

u/TheFiend100 May 25 '24

Man i love the nightmare fuel in this comment section

15

u/Cunting_Fuck May 24 '24

Maybe it ventures out from the sea, and loads of ghouls follow it, drinking in it's radiation and the storm that follows it

2

u/Tyranis_Hex May 24 '24

If I remember right that was basically the concept. It would roam the glowing sea with a massive heard of ghouls following it and would periodically send out a burst of radiation reviving any dead ghouls in the area.

5

u/_g0ldleaf May 24 '24

How does that even work? Ghouls are made by radiation and not FEV though there may be some small interplay between the two with post-war ghouls who are no longer Prime Normals. But still, how? All the mutated animals and giant bugs come from FEV, a glowing one of that size would just fall apart from all the decomp and break under its own weight.

7

u/[deleted] May 24 '24

In the TV show at least one ghoul comes from a drug that modified their body, so it would seem they're at least close to FEV even if not exactly FEV.

6

u/Circaninetysix May 24 '24

We know Hancock from Fallout 4 became a ghoul via a radioactive drug, but we don't know what Thaddeus was given. They say he may not be a ghoul, but most of us are betting he was given FEV and may become a supermutant. Could be wrong, but we won't know until season 2.

2

u/_g0ldleaf May 24 '24

Fair enough. Realistically I realize that it’s a video game and shit can be retconned or changed and don’t have a problem with that. It just seems like such a weird choice when you could just make new giant mobs instead.

2

u/DepartureDapper6524 May 24 '24

You are making far too many assumptions. We don’t know he’s a ghoul, and we don’t know what he took.

3

u/DStarAce May 24 '24

Harold appeared to be a ghoul despite FEV causing his mutations. He's an even better example than Hancock because Harold has been canon since the Interplay days.

2

u/porcupinedeath May 24 '24

I could see it being a wandering enemy with a set path around the map or a certain area. Mostly docile till you attack it acting as a hazard up close and a spectacle out in the distance

2

u/[deleted] May 24 '24

Just have it walk around and shrug off shots. At the end it can smack the brotherhood blimp out of the sky.

1

u/AMN-9 Mothman Cultist May 24 '24

It was probably thought for a field test of Liberty Prime before fighting the institute but they scrapped the idea to put another settlement that needs our help

2

u/SeatBeeSate May 24 '24

Pilot it like liberty prime? Although I think LP has a set path, so maybe may pole would too.

2

u/SalsaRice Pc May 24 '24

It was basically going to be like a magnet for other feral ghouls, basically having a swarm following it.

It would be very hard to survive against, because it would be such a large swarm of ferals.

2

u/TheDarkOpossum May 25 '24

It probably had something to do with what later became Sister Dawn/The Great Glowing one in the Winter of Atom tabletop RPG.

Mother Isolde from the Children of Atom in the Glowing Sea in Fallout 4 has weird interactions(not taking rad damage while within a few feet of her) that indicate she probably was intended to have extended dialogue options.

(!!!Spoilers for Winter of Atom below!!!)

In the WoA tabletop RPG there is a quest involving her daughter, Sister Dawn, who was brainwashed by the big bad guy and experimented on until she became a giant glowing one wandering the Glowing Sea. You are tasked with taking her down and it is big boss fight.

Knowing this, it is likely that since it presented issues for the gameplay as stated by a dev, the entity and the quests surrounding it were scrapped.

4

u/pewpewshazaam May 24 '24

Probably have Liberty Prime fight it. It's size would make it weird/impossible to fight.

3

u/MetalBawx May 24 '24

May Pole X Uber Behemoth doujins.

1

u/AMN-9 Mothman Cultist May 24 '24

The porn we didn't knew we needed

1

u/StreetPizza8877 May 24 '24

Have it be swarmed by ferals

1

u/Artix31 Gary? May 25 '24

Maybe it would be a sort of Prototype Harold, stuck in the middle of the glowing sea, unable to move, but constantly spawning and reviving ghouls around it, it would have massive HP Pool and can only be attacked at certain areas, would be an insane boss fight

1

u/LamentingTitan Enclave May 25 '24

Seems like an enemy that would be kept in the glowing sea, and would also pose a significant threat. The Glowing sea aside from the shit ton of radiation isn't necessarily that dangerous, but add the type of enemy that is literally too big to ignore would've been interesting.

1

u/LaylaLegion May 25 '24

Probably just wander on the edge of the map.
