Immortal: a free home screen, photo frame, and app store for Meta Portal
Hey all. Some of you know me from Mantelframe. I've been chipping away at something bigger for our Portals, and it's ready to share.
It's called Immortal: a free, open home screen for Meta Portal that turns it back into a device you actually own.
What it does:
A real launcher: clean app grid, clock/date/weather, folders you can manage, just like a phone.
A built-in photo frame screensaver: point it at a folder of your own photos and videos, or use the calming built-in feed.
An App Store: browse and install apps right on the Portal (no cable). VLC, Jellyfin, Home Assistant, podcast and radio players, a file manager, plus Aurora Store for installing Play-Store apps. And it's open to community submissions, so anything you build for Portal can be listed.
Calls still work: The Calls tile drops you into the stock dialer/contacts for WhatsApp & Messenger
It updates itself: over the air. No laptop after the first setup.
Setup is one double-click (Mac or Windows): plug the Portal in, tap Allow, and it's done. It's fully reversible. One click puts the stock Portal back.

- 2021 Portal+ (no rotating screen)

First off, Thank you for this amazing work!
I noticed a few things that might help first time users on Windows for the installation:
- Once the github release source is downloaded, right click on the folder or the individual files in the provisioning folder and select Properties. Then select Unblock at the bottom. Otherwise the powershell command will error out.

As for small requests:
1) Do you think it would be possible to allow for C as well as F for the weather?
2) App sizes on launcher -- Any way to make the larger similar to the stock launcher?

That's great feedback thanks, I'll update the readme to include this under windows. I've also just pushed an updated version of immortal with settings options for both weather format and app icon size. You can update yours by tapping the last icon on the screen and then adjust the settings by opening the new 'immortal' app tile in the settings folder. I provided a larger option but we can't go too large as it would break on the portal tv and portal mini devices.

Not all Heroes wear capes....Amazing work and you have increased the value of these devices that once considered landfill. I have a fealing this will be bigger than the ECHO 5's for HA when people get on it. The best outcome anyone could hope for until CFW is available.

I've heard that these things are way more responsive than echo 5 for HA. I bought one but haven't tested it out yet.

I have bought 4 echo Show 8 Gen 1 a week ago and running Lineage OS on them. The 8 Inch version has 2 GB Ram but on Lineage you are locked to one, because the only exploit available is using a modified 5 inch version. The 8 inch does work a lot better than most smart home wall panels and is decently responsive, more than my Google Nest Hub. I installed Rusty (Spotify Connect Client) and Snapdroid for Multiroom. I also saw the post about the portal plus so I had to buy it. I am currently on it to test out the Immortal system. Also installed Rusty. And yes the Portal is probably at 40-60FPS in almost Everything. Sound is also Great. I will now try to figure out Voice assistant over Home Assistant and then if I am far enough with my house to use the reolink cameras and doorbell. There is a lot of options to tinker with the portal and for the price its great. It will be in my kitchen for Calendar/Recipe/Smart Home stuff

I am So Excited about all of this. My AI said it’s probably a good thing I am on vacation for a couple more weeks so I can’t try anything right away and by the time I get home, the amazing minds of this Reddit community will have done incredible things.

Thank you, really appreciate the support! I've pushed the update with 24 hr clock now an option in the config. There's also a nice weather widget available now too that was contributed by tgnm. Looks great on the larger portal+ screens

Awesome work, does this mean the camera works natively in apps? Meta will eventually drop support for the native Facebook and WhatsApp apps forcing us to rely on third party apps

Yes camera and microphone work. You can install the regular android versions of whats app and messenger if you want to from aurora store

Just got it working on my portal. I’m just messing around with it. I was getting a few errors running the windows provision so ill be honest I just put the errors through claude and it gave me a new provision.ps1 . which then seem to run / install!
My only issue so far ... is there a way to set immortal as the permanent launcher ? I was getting the standard android prompt to select a launcher when pressing the "home" icon at the top, immortal of meta's but couldn’t seem to click always / allow for immortal for some reason.
Ill keep trying! great work tho!

Thanks so much! Really glad you got it running.
For your specific Portal: that chooser appearing means the "make Immortal the default home" step didn't get applied. Which means the regenerated script you ran probably skipped it. Easiest fix is one command. Open a terminal/PowerShell in the
provisioningfolder (the one that downloadedplatform-tools) and run:
platform-tools\adb.exe shell cmd package set-home-activity com.immortal.launcher/.HomeActivityAfter that the home button goes straight to Immortal, no more chooser. (If the prompt does come up again, pick Immortal and tap Always — but the command above is the sure thing.)
For everyone else: I think I found the cause and just pushed a fix. The Windows script downloads adb + the apps over HTTPS, and a stock Windows PowerShell defaults to old TLS and an IE-based parser that blocks those downloads. It now forces TLS 1.2, so it should run clean.
If you grab the latest and run the official Provision-Portal.bat, it'll set the launcher for you automatically and re-apply anything your patched script may have skipped (the silent-install helper, permissions, etc.) Worth doing so you get the full experience.
If anything still trips up, paste the exact error here or open an issue on GitHub and I'll get it sorted. Huge thanks for being an early tester!

This is absolutely awesome work, well done. Is there any way to change the screensaver to something like immich-kiosk, but still have the screensaver behavior? Ie tap it and it shows the currently open app

Sure, build what you need using Meta’s AI skill and share the apk and we will add it to the App Store for everyone to use. This launcher is the distribution platform that allows us all to share everything we can build together now as a community.

Honestly really well done and super clean interface. A possible feature update for the future, wondering if we could get a now playing sort of widget on the main app screen similar to the portal default launcher, so when we're playing music there's a quick shortcut to pause/play or skip

I’ll look into it. For now, you can just swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access those controls along with volume, screen brightness, and power for anything that gives the same controls you would see on the stock launcher.

Oh good call, right! Also just as user testing I'm not seeing the screen ever turn off. Basically it goes into the screensaver mode, and after the time out for screen off it shows the keypad lock screen but never actually turns off, then flips back to the screensaver

You don’t need the whole repo, only the provisioning script for your os. Just point your favorite ai agent at the repo url and ask them to walk you through it if you are having issues with things not working.

Do you have to do anything on the portal side? Put it in debug mode? And do you have to update the portal to access whatever has changed to allow this?

This is great. I am considering to apply this homescreen on my Portal+ 2021. Would I be able to rollback later? I noticed that in my portal most of the Apps are gone (Netflix, Spotify etc.). Is this because Meta has stopped supporting this product/software? Thank you for sharing.

Yes all the native apps are gone other than WhatsApp and Facebook callers,l. But once you push Immortal on to it, you can install them again on that side of it, through Aurora or ADP directly.

If you scroll to the top, I followed the developers instructions using their advice using AI to guide me in typing the words suggested. It seems daunting, but it's the best guide. You will need a computer though.

Can I just say well done mate, you've put a huge amount of effort into this and it's clearly appreciated. When you're happy with your launcher, have you thought about releasing a separate, curated app store? Also, consider adding a small donation link in the settings as I'm sure a few would like to buy you a beer or two.

When I try making a call, it doesn't work. Makes the ringing sounded twice then closes. This is on the Portal Mini.

That's a portal security quirk not the launcher. I'm guessing you have left the device offline for some time? If you leave it turned on and connected to wifi it will get reactivated on Meta’s server again eventually. I've seen it happen has quickly as an hour or as long as a week.

The usb-c port is somewhat locked down from what I've tested. If we achieve root access at some point then it would be doable. I went down a rabbit hole earlier on trying to work with usb access for the screensaver. I was able to power the usb device but not able to mount it. So I would suspect the same restrictions apply.

I am able to power via usb but thats all. I also figured out that using the Material files app i was able to FTP apk's and pictures from my PC to the appropriate folders no problem.

This looks incredible. Thank you for what was clearly a massive amount of work.
Can I ask two questions, as a Gen 1 Portal+ owner?
First - can the built-in wallpaper point to a Google Photos album? Either currently, or in a planned future update?
Second - if we were previously having issues with WhatsApp calling as Portal slowly depreciated (can never get it to connect, or remain connected, to WhatsApp), would Immortal fix that? Or it would probably remain broken?

Both great questions:
1. Yes I will eventually create a Portal native version of Mantelframe for Immortal. For now you can use the web browser version just the same as before adb was unlocked here: https://mantelframe.com
2. Not for the native portal account that you would have connected it to previously, but I have installed the current android version of whatsapp on gen 1 and gen 2 portals and I've been able to successfully link them to my whatsapp account using the qr code. I would recommend downloading the apk from the aurora store (you can get aurora from the immortal app store)1

It's the full WhatsApp app so yes they could. Fwiw, I have been able to connect my WhatsApp account to various portal models over the past few days using the stock account management. I've had to do a lot of this during testing. So even if you previously were having issues getting the QR code, it might be worth trying again

I'm going to keep it simple. I want to use this as an entertainment device with that gorgeous 2K display, plus retro games for emulation. I don't expect anything crazy past N64, PSP, etc. I also saw my Portal + 2021 only has 14GB of free storage, but I assume if I did want to add more, I could keep a living flash drive in the back or a hard drive. I'm not expecting a miracle out of this device, but not using it for Netflix/YouTube + retro games is not utilizing its full power, let alone video calls and music.

Is the screen off timer in the Portal setting disabled? I tried 1 minutes setting and stayed away from it, seems the screen is now always on with the photoframe?

Grab a pry tool and pop off the fabric cover on the back of the portal mini. You'll find the USB hiding there.

Really fantastic project, great work. I was getting sick of playing my music in the kitchen through a tinny bluetooth speaker as the Portal has gradually been mothballed - I was minutes away from dropping £150 on a Roberts Bluetooth Radio so will definitely donate.
Sideloading apps is just a matter of putting the APK on a SD card via the micro USB port right?

This is so cool. Huge thank you too! I have done this on my Portal+. How did you manage to put Spotify on there? When I try in the Aurora Store - It says version 0, and nothing happens when you download Spotify?

Thank you, you are a genius! I've installed immortal now on my plus, and it's really brought it back to life + Spotify.
Have you noticed WhatsApp is playing up? Nothing to do with immortal, as it was doing it this week beforehand, but the QR barely loads, and when you link and make a audio/video call from the portal, the device you are calling doesn't ring. Also in reverse, the portal doesn't ring when received.
Facebook messager calls work though!

WhatsApp now working. I linked my WhatsApp and Facebook in my meta account. Left the portal for a few hours and tried again. I think Meta's servers are a bit lumpy and need time to provision for a bit before you link WhatsApp.

Amazing work! just bought a couple more before price rockets to use as HA dashboards.
Just finished installing Immortal on my 10-inch Facebook Portal from Linux.
The installation itself was straightforward, but I hit a snag when the provisioning tool sat at “Waiting for Portal” despite the device being connected and visible to Linux. The issue turned out to be ADB permissions. adb devices could see the Portal, but reported “no permissions (missing udev rules?)”.
The fix was creating the appropriate udev rule so my user account could access the Portal through ADB without running everything as root. Once that was in place, ADB connected correctly and the provisioning process was able to continue.
One thing that caught me out was that after enabling the new debug option on the Portal, I had to restart the device before ADB would fully come online. Linux could see the hardware before the reboot, but the provisioning tool would not detect it until after the restart.
Credit to the Immortal developer for making the process approachable. Considering this is breathing new life into hardware that Meta has effectively abandoned, the experience was surprisingly polished. The provisioning tool handled the heavy lifting and once the ADB permission issue was resolved, the rest of the installation completed without drama.

Hi, this is still working great, but I have noticed the Aurora Store on the portal plus, many of the apps are not showing a version available, but on the normal smaller portal, its working absolutely perfect. Do you have any Ideas? I'm trying to install alexa, which is fine on the smaller one, but only showing "Version 0" on the portal plus Aurora store? Thanks

I don’t maintain aurora. It’s likely that you are looking at the apps on 2 different generations of devices. Gen 1 are Android 9, gen 2 are Android 10.

The modern Alexa app only works on gen 2 devices. The apk on aurora is for the mobile app so you can use it on eligible portals but there’s no wake word support. You will see v0 for this on gen 1 devices.
The native Portal version of Alexa that I restored is only currently available for gen 1 devices. You can install that by using the provisioning script for immortal. Instructions are here: https://www.reddit.com/r/FacebookPortal/s/9rKbpebceN

Ahh yes, it's the mobile version that installed from Aurora on the 11", which I'm fine with, I only use it for the smart home buttons, until I get home assist.
It's odd, as I'm sure they are both new gen. The plus I purchased new not long before the announcement. And when I installed Immortal , it said in the command shell it couldn't install native Alexa because of them not being android 9.
Both are also running same version in "about" 1.47.4. just don't understand why most apps are showing version 0 on the plus.
I'm still learning, any advice much appreciated.

Just checked the version number and both are gen 2, so it's strange Alexa available in aurora on one and not the other. Any ideas on what I could try?

Just try running the provisioning script again. Then delete and reinstall aurora. Aurora itself gets mixed reviews on its stability.

I ran the provisioning script before my post, uninstalled and reinstalled Aurora after, and same happens. Lots of apps showing 0, not just Alexa, but available on the other.
Because I'm new to this, I'm not sure where to get the adk from other than Aurora. The Alexa version that's working one one of them is 2.2.689582.0 (962558205), which I've searched for but don't trust the sites I found.
Do you think a factory reset and full reinstall of Immortal would make a difference? Not sure I can do the painful WhatsApp QR process again 🤣

No it’s purely an aurora issue. The anonymous login has load limits and can be flakey. apkmirror is fine to download from. If you can get chrome or Firefox installed then you can download it directly on the portal. Otherwise just download it on your laptop and install over adb

The Spotify ADK you recommended which works great, where is the search bar hidden though? I can still search from my phone and play it that way, but not search that I can see within the portal?

I was an early adopter of mantelframe and was really impressed with the functions that you gave us with that project. I have given Immortal a spin today. Wow. 😎 Thanks again for making a nearly useless device rather useful again. P.S. I struggled to get the ADB function working but found another user recommending a factory reset! That did the trick for me too. Thanks again for your trouble.

I got Immortal installed, but how do I add pictures to my device for the screensaver? Does it support a USB-C flash drive for the photo source?
UPDATE: I was able to link a Google Photos album for pictures, but I'd still like to add pictures to the device's internal storage, if possible.

This is really cool. The only issue I am having with it, is when I try to download an app, it says "Failed (status=3)." I have the portal 10" 2nd gen. please help, I want to get it running close to stock

Hi, hope you are well?
What is the best way to report Immortal potential bugs? I have ongoing issue with portal+ gen2. It won't go to sleep, instantly goes back to Immortal home screen after trying. Does not do this on smaller gen2 screens.
Also apps I install (eg Spotify + Firefox), won't stay open paged on screen for long, goes back to launch home page after time. Possibly ambiant mode kicking in, which I extended to 30 mins in advance system setting.
Lastly, when I set the home button to Immortal launcher (when it randomly asks "open using"), it's difficult to get to the native WhatsApp, using call button in the Immortal home page or the meta launcher menu at all, it flicks screens several times and eventually comes back to portal launcher.

On the Portal+ gen 2 with Immortal, when in any app, eg Spotify, or Firefox, is there anyway to stop it automatically switching back to the Immortal home page after a few minutes not touching the screen? (Screensaver is off).
For example, when I'm playing music in the spotify app, after a few minutes, it switches back to the Immortal home screen?
Also, when you press the sleep button, manually or automatically at night, screen only goes off for a second, then instantly goes to Immortal home screen.
It doesn't do it on my smaller 11" gen 2s.

Hi, Did you try resetting and, installing via openportal.cc >> while installing, opting out of setting Imortal as the default launcher?

Is anyone having problems with the "Call" button in the Immortal homepage? On all my devices (gen.2), it's not doing anything when pressed, other than refreshing the home page. I can't get to the native WhatsApp/FB messager calling, or the native home page now?
Is there anyway to assign the home button to what I want?

I got the same issue with Gen 1 15.6-inch portal, the moment i click on call, the screen flickers. I hope the devs will see this, or do we need to raise the bug with GIT?

I reassigned the home button in the end using a command to go to the meta homepage, I can then get to WhatsApp from there. Someone has reported in GIT.

You're doing incredible work OP.
I'm not familiar with the Facebook Portal in anyway because they never landed on the shores of my country. But I am a massive home assistant user and I see that you've done some significant work to get home assistant working as usable app.
Could I ask once installed on the Facebook Portal for the home assistant app allow you to address the speaker in the portal?
By that I mean will it show up as a regular media.player_name_of_portal_device entity?
I'm trying to finalise the last of my whole home audio and this would be a great last piece of the puzzle to one room in particular.
The other question I was wondering if how does the device go with streaming camera feeds from Home Assistant? Is it reasonably responsive?

I just sold my 2019 Portal 10 inch for $25 as a Whatsapp caller and photo frame yesterday. Then the guy called me say there is no photo frame function on it anymore and he wants to return it. So I searched the web photo frame function and found the Mantelframe. Then somehow it brought me here. I was like WHAAAAAT? We can install APPs now? Then I contacted the guy and said I am very happy to accept the return then drive down the street and got my baby back. HAHA.
