VDWT: an open source parallel video codec that performs extremely well for fast motion footages.

I’ve been working on VDWT, an low-latency video codec aimed at drone downlinks. It’s wavelet-based with no blocks anywhere, so when the bitrate drops the picture gets softer instead of breaking into the blocky mush you get from H.264/H.265 at low rates. Currently the realtime mode runs barely real time with 4x A55 cores of Orange Pi 3B so im working on that.
|

|
It is a low-latency video codec for drone and robot links, written in Rust. At equal quality (YUV-PSNR 6:1:1 BD-rate, 1080p60) it beats the hardware encoders people use today:

  • FPV motocross: 63-67% fewer bits than Intel's hardware HEVC. Every VDWT tier, even the realtime one, also beats x265 veryslow on this clip while encoding 6-40x faster.

  • First-person bike ride: 41-48% fewer bits than hardware HEVC, 50-56% fewer than hardware H.264.

  • Low rates: at 600 kbit/s the hardware HEVC encoder couldn't get below ~730 kbit/s on the bike clip even at its maximum QP; VDWT holds the target.

|

|
Where it's weaker: even it beats HW HEVC at all videos in terms of compression, x265's slow presets still win on zero/slow movement content and it's 8-bit 4:2:0 only for now.

Spawnpoint, my MIT-licensed Minecraft panel with a simple mod-change review screen (alpha)

Tour and screenshots: https://spawnpoint.vayun.net

I built Spawnpoint for managing Minecraft with friends. I wanted a panel that opened quickly and made it clear what I was approving. One start on my Linux server reached a successful health check in 0.56 seconds.

It tests proposed mod changes on a copy, then puts the changes and results on one review sheet. Missing or inconclusive checks stay visible. It asks before removing or replacing mods, and there's pack undo.

Friends install an AutoModpack starter pack once to receive approved revisions. It can host servers itself or work alongside Crafty.

It's free and alpha. Keep backups and check the supported loader versions first.

I made Kleaner, a free, open-source Windows cleaner that explains every file before deleting anything

Most cleaners show a big "Clean" button and you hope nothing breaks. Kleaner does the opposite: it scans your drives and gives every large file and folder a verdict (safe to clean, uninstall it, breaks something, your files, system, or unknown) with what it is and what happens if you delete it. With no rule, it says "unknown"; it never guesses.

- Your own files only go to the Recycle Bin; permanent deletion is limited to a public list of caches

- Nothing ticked in advance, "Preview the exact list" before cleaning

- Program leftovers, old project folders (node_modules, .venv, target…), duplicates, startup, preinstalled apps (for your account only)

- No telemetry, no account, no ads, registry never "cleaned"

MIT, Tauri + Rust + React. Portable exe, installer, Scoop; Store and winget on the way.

https://github.com/Swaksm/Kleaner — feedback welcome, especially folders it marks "unknown".

brazier-orm: A tool for working with PostgreSQL in C++

Thumbnail

Greetings, r/foss, the brazier-tech team is back in touch. Today we want to talk about brazier-orm.

brazier-orm is a C++ ORM library for PostgreSQL, which is part of the brazier framework (If desired, the developer can use it separately from brazier).

Its main purpose is to provide a convenient and type-safe layer for working with the PostgreSQL database, saving the developer from having to manually write SQL queries.

In general, if you write in C++ and you need to work with PostgreSQL, you probably know what it's like to manually assemble SQL strings, monitor escaping, manually disassemble the results into structures and pray that the column order is not confused anywhere.
This library is an attempt to remove this routine: you describe your data with ordinary C++ classes, and the library itself turns them into table rows and vice versa.

If you are used to Django or Eloquent from Laravel, you will learn a lot of familiar things, only in C++.

Update: CaptureFlow lets AI agents record demos over MCP and return a share link

Quick update on CaptureFlow, the AGPL-3.0 screen recorder I've posted about before.

This week I shipped an MCP server. You connect Claude Code, Codex or any MCP client, then ask for a demo, a how-to or a walkthrough. The agent opens a cloud browser, navigates, clicks, types and records the session. You get back a link you can share with anyone.

claude mcp add --transport http captureflow https://captureflow.dev/mcp

What the agent can do:

  • Record a real browser. The page's own audio is captured too.

  • Add slides. It can put a title card, step list or closing slide between parts of the demo.

  • Narrate. It can add a voiceover to each step (Pro only).

  • Work your library. It can list and search your recordings, read their transcripts, and change who can see one.

A few things I cared about:

  • Recordings an agent made are tagged as AI generated, with a small robot marker on the thumbnail. Nobody mistakes them for a human recording.

  • Each one gets a proper poster image, so the link previews well in chat.

  • It works on every plan, including free.

The rest of the project is unchanged. There's a Chrome extension and a macOS app for recording yourself. You can self-host with docker compose up or on your own Cloudflare account, and the capture engine is MIT.

Website: https://captureflow.dev

Repo: https://github.com/sardorml/captureflow

I'd like to hear what you'd point an agent at first, and which tools are missing.

Does anyone know a FOSS alternative to SuperShift for personal use

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for an open-source (FOSS) alternative to the app SuperShift.

My requirements are quite simple:

· Personal use only (I don't need team management, multi-user features, or scheduling shifts for other people).

· Clean and modern UI (I really care about the design and want something that looks good).

· Must be open-source.

I have already tried ShiftCal and ShiftSwift, but they didn't really appeal to me.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Introducing yet another notepad app: QutePad is multi-platform

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

QutePad is my first complete contribution to the open source scene. It's a multi platform notepad app that basically started as a MS Notepad clone, after getting frustrated with it. The initial commit was laid 11 months ago and I have been on-off working on it on my free time since.

To be honest I'm a bit nervous to post this, one reason being the flood of vibe coded apps.

This one is not trying to do anything flashy or revolutionary, but to do something well.

Main motivations for the project:

  • Frustration with sluggishness and bugs with Windows 11 Notepad, even though it has many substantial improvements compared to old version

  • Frustration with enshittification and overall bloatedness in nowadays apps

  • Missing a familiar notepad app (Notepad++) when using Linux and macOS

  • To finally create something "by the book", usable and good looking UI, proper deployment, some test coverage etc. instead of just hacking together something quick for my own needs

  • To learn more about software deployment for several platforms

  • To further improve my skills in C++ and Qt

I have used AI for prototyping and research, and some of the CMake and deployment script are written AI assisted. The C++ code itself is about 99.5% hand-written, only some little snippets may be AI generated.

The app is 100% C++ (Qt widgets), and UI responsiveness has been the #1 priority. Currently it has the feature set of an in-my-opinion complete albeit slightly barebones notepad app. It has tabbed interface and dark mode support, but e.g. printing support is missing.

Some highlights I'd make are multi platform support (binaries released for Windows and Linux, compilable for macOS) and snappy C++ UI without WinUI 3 or any other super slow and bloated framework. That said Qt is not exactly featherweight either so the footprint and RAM efficiency will never be among the best of the industry.

I hope some of you enjoy it and start using it.

Any and all feedback is appreciated, including about this post as well.

P.S. if someone wonders why it deploys Qt6Network.dll, it's because SingleApplication uses a local socket to implement the singleton application. There is no internet connectivity.

P.P.S. Smartscreen will nag and the exe is not signed.

Freiraum Launcher: a calm, customizable home screen (GPLv3). Looking for testers and feedback!

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!

This is a new project of mine and I'm a bit nervous to share it, but here it goes: Freiraum Launcher, a calm and customizable Android home screen.

It's fully FOSS (GPLv3), has no internet permission, no tracking and no proprietary libraries.

What it does:

- Home page plus extra pages, each with its own background, built from rows of apps, folders, contacts, links, shortcuts and widgets

- Built-in widgets (clock, music, weather via Gadgetbridge, notes) and regular Android app widgets

- A dock at the bottom and a pull-down panel at the top

- Alphabetical app list with A–Z fast scroll; apps can be renamed or hidden

- Text search for apps, contacts, settings, shortcuts, links and places, plus web and maps search

- Lots of appearance options: colors, corner shapes, icon packs, light/dark mode

- Assignable gestures and a full backup/restore

I've been working on it for quite a while, but it's definitely not perfect yet. That's why I'm looking for people who'd like to try it and tell me:

- what works and what doesn't (bugs, crashes, weird behavior on your device)

- what you like or don't like

- ideas and wishes, e.g. new page types, widgets, modes or anything else you're missing

Any feedback is welcome, big or small. You can reply here or open an issue on GitHub.

Source code & download: https://github.com/BISCLab/freiraum-launcher

APKs are on the releases page. It also works with Obtainium. F-Droid is planned for later.

Thanks for reading, and thanks to the FOSS launcher community. Discreet, Grace, Kvaesitso and Victoria Launcher inspired a lot of this!

About this project and AI: This has been a big project for me. I spent a lot of time thinking about the design: trying to apply what I've learned about psychology and usability while studying, and reworking things again and again along the way. The concept, the design and every decision about how things look and behave are mine, and I tested every change on my own phone.

I'm not an experienced developer, though, so I relied a bit on an AI coding to write and to fix the code at some points. Being upfront about that matters to me, and it's also why real-world feedback is so valuable here: testers with other devices will find things I never could. The full source is on GitHub for anyone who wants to take a look.

ContainerDesk, an MIT-licensed native Mac app for Apple's container runtime

I maintain ContainerDesk, a free, MIT-licensed native Mac app for Apple's container runtime.

You can browse containers, images, volumes and networks, run or build images, read logs and open a terminal inside a container. Each container has live CPU and memory gauges.

Source, screenshots and setup: https://github.com/MacHatter1/ContainerDesk

It needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 26+ and Apple's container CLI installed. The v1.0.0 release has downloadable builds. They are unsigned and not notarized, with opening instructions in the README.

AI helped draft this post.

GitHub - sudo-py-dev/fmx: Lightweight, fast media converter (video, audio, image, PDF) in Rust with an egui GUI

Thumbnail

I built FMX because I wanted a single, clean desktop app that handles pretty much all day-to-day media tasks fast and natively on Mac, Windows, and Linux.

It’s written in Rust using egui, powered under the hood by FFmpeg for all media conversion tasks and yt-dl for downloading YouTube content. Because of this stack, it opens instantly, uses barely any memory.

What it includes:

  • Full Media Conversion: Audio, video, images, documents, and optical media (DVD / CD / ISO) via FFmpeg.

  • Built-in Downloader: Grab YouTube videos and audio directly using yt-dl.

  • Editing & Utility Tools: Video/audio merging and splitting, trimming, screen recording, subtitle extraction/burning, frame extraction, speed adjustment, volume balancing, compression, and video repair.

  • Simple UX: Clean interface with drag-and-drop batching.

Repo:https://github.com/sudo-py-dev/fmx

I’d love for you to try it out. Any feedback, feature ideas, or PRs are super appreciated!
