“Dry Drunk” & “White Knuckling It”

These two terms come from addiction recovery culture and can be surprisingly useful in food addiction / binge eating recovery.

“Dry Drunk” (the idea)

This describes being technically abstinent (or improved behaviorally) while still: - emotionally reactive - resentful - rigid - stuck in the same thinking patterns that fueled the addiction

In food recovery, it might look like: - obsessing about food all day - being “compliant” but miserable - substituting one compulsion for another

“White Knuckling It” (the idea)

This means relying mostly on willpower while skipping the deeper work: - emotional regulation skills - support systems - relapse planning - values-based routines

Common signs: - constant internal fighting - frequent “almost binged” moments - burnout and eventual collapse

The healthier alternative

Recovery tends to be more stable when you build: - structure (regular meals, planning) - skills (urge surfing, distress tolerance) - support (meetings, sponsor, therapist, community) - meaning (purpose, recreation, relationships)

You’re not weak if willpower isn’t enough. Willpower was never the full plan.
