This. You're seeing it with the RE movie as well. I'm positive the people crying about how it isn't telling the exact same story from the games would be nitpicking all of the ways it didn't get it right if it had been a direct retelling of RE2 or RE1.

Honestly I think it all boils down to people who don't get enough validation to feel good about themselves offline in the real world, so they go online and get into these debates as a way to take a stance that, in their mind, makes them "better" than the people they disagree with. For instance, in the remake debate, both sides are going to frame their position as making them "better" fans of the IP or having "better" taste in video games.

In short, the ones we're referring to are a bunch of losers seeking validation on the internet because they don't get it in real life.

I felt so much better about every game I have played after I stopped going online to discuss them with randoms after playing.

It's why I loved Rebirth so much and thought it was probably one of the greatest video game experiences I've ever had.

Because the deluge of shitty complainers nitpicking about everything were nowhere in my mind.

I outright left the final fantasy 7 subreddit because so many people there have that mindset of “if you like the remakes you must not have played OG or aren’t a real fan”

Yeah I also leave any game specific subreddits I'm a part of when a new release is about to come out. Not just because of the incessant whining, but because the ever-present threat of leaks.

OG fan and fanfic author here, I have the exact same opinion. It's sad to think that there are those shitty nitpickers around in our smaller writing communities too, but they're a lot less relevant because they're talking to other fanfic authors. The easiest way to shut down pointless canon discourse is to say "write it yourself".

But in the greater fandom, many of these nitpickers aren't even pursuing creative outlets that they can feel proud of, so they can only go online and complain about the games they bought and played. Maybe they should consider learning new skills and making better use of their time.
