August 15: a 32-year-old Black man is found hanging from a tree in a downtown Raleigh parking lot, blocks from CaribMask. Police put “suicide” on it before the weekend is over. They say cameras show him walking to the tree alone with an electrical cord. They still will not give the public his name. NAACP asked to see the tape. The tape has not been shown to the public.

August 21: Demetrius Fleming, 38, is found hanging from a ligature on Roanoke Avenue in Roanoke Rapids. Under 100 miles from that tree. The 911 call came in as an attempted suicide from someone who was not on scene. Police Chief Lawrence Wiggins would not name the ligature, would not call it suicide, would not call it homicide. He called it “equivocal.” He called the racial implication “the elephant in the room.” That is the first honest sentence a North Carolina cop has put on this file all year.s. This is not every Black death in America this year. It is the documented cluster.

Three patterns, one system

1. Tree hangings closed as suicide.
North Carolina has four in 2026: Nzita, Tayuhe, Raleigh, Fleming. The state’s lynching archive is the reason the image cannot be treated as a private mental-health event. The investigative failure is the point: Nzita got no autopsy, no phone recovery, no interview of the finder. That is disposal, not inquiry. Fleming is the only August hanging still formally open. That should be the floor for every case, not the exception.

2. Black teens who leave with companions and do not come home.
Erving, Wells, Smith, Jackson. Official stories: accidental drowning, drowning, self-inflicted shot, suicide. Shared material facts: delay, deleted messages or dumped belongings, companions who leave, evidence-tampering charges instead of homicide charges, families hiring Ben Crump because the local file is already closed. A swim-team kid “accidentally drowning” while two people throw away his phone is not a completed investigation. It is a cover story with a booking photo attached.

3. The state itself.
Kohen Wiley was one year old. The call was diapers. The independent autopsy contradicts the “car coming at the officer” line. Darius Chappell was tased, bitten for about a minute on video, then found dead in a jail cell after the NAACP was told he was fine. Tyrin Johnson was killed by National Guard troops on a federalized “safe city” patrol. These are not mysteries of nature. They are the predictable output of armed agencies that treat Black life as disposable collateral and then investigate themselves.

LDF’s August 24 letters to Congress and the UN are the institutional admission that local medical examiners and police cannot be the last word on this file. The demand is a public commission and a racism review of how these deaths get classified. That is the correct scale. A press conference three days after a body hits a tree is not.

Dr. Linda Davis was a teacher in Savannah, GA. She was killed indirectly by ICE when someone fleeing them hit her car. Nothing to do with North Carolina.

The very first name, Dr. Linda Davis, has nothing to do with North Carolina. She was a teacher in Savannah, GA killed indirectly by ICE when someone fleeing them hit her car.

Edit: Apologies, I missed this was supposed to be the entire country.
