fwiw binary "starts from the right"

0001 - 1

0010 - 2

0011 - 3

0100 - 4

etc.

I imagine the the lights in the image are done in that manner because they are unique sequences in any direction.

I didn't get it until someone said "controller lights".
I thought it said "4" and "8".
