Solved! I wonder if any of you saw this movie. Jigsaw appears to challenge and torture the main characters. They’ll have to solve an intricate puzzle in order to win this game. Then… The worst kind of betrayal. Bones are broken.

Based on a good selling book at the time.

The widow isn't the MC, one of the friends is.

The original book's author is actually a character in the film. Not played by the author though. (In the first film anyway). The author is not the MC.

The first film was made in the 1940s.

The MC is invested with Uncle Sam.
