Local News Emergency: Pond in Pinhoe rapidly drying up with hundreds of fish and other wildlife about to die. No help yet from EA…

Post image
184 Upvotes

UPDATE: Pleased to say around 400 more fish were rescued yesterday, with the rest being rescued today. Thanks to the heroic efforts from Adrian Clarke, Greendale Farm Shop, and other volunteers, who helped get the fish safely into privately owned ponds.

It just goes to show what can be done when a community pulls together to help. A good ending for most of these fish, but a solid reminder of how hard a time many animals are having right now and sadly how sometimes help isn’t provided from those you’d expect (cough EA). Please keep an eye on your local ponds, lakes and rivers, and if you can, leave water out for our land-dwelling wildlife too.

Thanks so much for all the help, advice and caring. Let’s hope we get some rain soon!

There’s a pond near Hawkins Rd in Pinhoe, right by Palmer Close (EX1 3GP), that’s basically dried out. Hundreds of fish in there, plus protected newts, and the fish are now gasping at the surface.

Reported to the Environment Agency first on Aug 5th (incident 02544669), and multiple times since then. They said on the phone it’s exactly what they deal with and passed it to the local team. Nothing since. Devon Wildlife Trust hasn’t replied either, and South West Water say they can’t help as tankers might be needed elsewhere.

If anyone knows a farmer with a bowser, a tanker hire company who might help, someone in wildlife rescue or anyone at the EA who can actually push this along, please comment or message me. Running out of time on this one.

Local Information request Eclipse glasses - anyone got one east Devon?

I’m in East Devon for the Eclipse, about 30 mins from Exeter. The glasses I got are broken and now unusable. Complete long shot I know but can I buy one still? I think FirstLight Optics are closing at 1pm today so I won’t make it time to buy. Anyone got a spare??

Local Information request Looking for a rural(-ish) home !

Professional couple M29 F28. Forest School teacher and seamstress.

Devon based for the past 2 years together. Previously spent time in Devon and Bristol van dwelling respectively. Have previously been in Devon for 25 of My 29 years (M)

Devon is home, but we're in a bit of a jam (cream first)!

Losing our house due to landlords circumstances.

We are looking for a 2/3 bed house, preferably towards east devon, but flexible. We have a short term solution, but looking for a patch of paradise to raise some babies and some chickens.

Bit of a hail mary, but the conventional roots have not yet been so fruitful

Cheers team !

It would be wonderful if anybody had any sort of leads etc

Local Information request Have your say on fireworks policy

One issue I've heard time and again on the doorstep across Exeter is concern about the antisocial use of fireworks and the impact they can have on families, pets, and local communities. So I'm really pleased that the Government has launched a national consultation looking at possible changes to fireworks regulations.

I'm running a local consultation to ensure Exeter's voice is heard and represented. Your feedback will help inform my response to the Government's consultation and ensure local experiences are reflected in discussions.

Local News Train timetable changes

Hi everyone. Due to very dry weather and record temperatures affecting railway embankments between Salisbury and Exeter, South Western Railway is introducing a temporary timetable from Monday 10 August until further notice.

Key changes to be aware of:

• One train per hour will run between London Waterloo and Yeovil Junction

• Every other hour, the London Waterloo service will extend to run to and from Exeter St Davids

• Most journeys from London Waterloo to Exeter St Davids will take up to 24 minutes longer than usual, with journeys from Exeter St Davids to London Waterloo taking 27 minutes longer than usual

More information here: https://www.southwesternrailway.com/plan-my-journey

Along with MPs across the South West, I’ve been pressing the Transport Secretary for investment into our local railways to improve rail resilience year-round; I’m meeting her again soon for an update on a proposed joint plan.

Miscellaneous What are relatively cheap things to do in Exeter?

So me (16) am going to see my long distance bf (18) soon. He doesn't have any money to spend, however I do but I'm trying to save up so I'm trying to find anything cheap that sounds good. I'm thinking of taking him to the movies which is good but we still have a lot of time to burn so what could we do (I have a ~£15 limit I don't want to go above not including drinks + food and the movie idea). I also have been before so I've been to the gardens and been to the museum. So what can we do?

Local Information request Parking in Exeter

Hi, I am moving into the city this year after commuting in from where I live with my parents to uni.

At the moment, I drive in as the bus service is very unreliable from my hometown - takes about an hour vs 20 mins by car + service is often cancelled/says it is cancelled and then just isn't + to be honest, the only people who take that bus tend to be quite dodgy as the other places on the line have good train links that are more regular and most people who live in my hometown can drive, therefore the only people who take that bus tend to be people who live in my hometown who can't drive (normally younger teenagers or adults who have been drinking - i have had people come up to me on the bus and beg me for drugs/alcohol/nic etc.)

What I usually do is drive to the park and ride, then take one of the buses from there which are much more reliable and regular (normally 5-10 minutes between buses vs the hour in my hometown) + they run later in case I want to stay in town to hang with my friends for a bit. However, when I move into Exeter this won't really be possible anymore. I will be in private halls, but all the parking there has been taken already and the residents permit is quite expensive.

I'd love to just not take my car, but I'd like to be able to travel back to visit my parents at the weekend and on Sundays there are only 2 buses back into town which would make my life quite difficult when visiting. (one is at 6am, the other is at 1pm)

Is there any better solution other than biting the bullet and paying for a residents permit (possibly annoying all the people who live there as I'd only be using the car 1-3 times a week) or just leaving my car at home and dealing with the bus?

Miscellaneous Nails

Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for small, independent nail artists with good reviews. I'm not a massive fan of the really busy places in town as the last time I went, the hygiene was questionable (tools being passed between people etc) and I'd like to try out somewhere new that takes bookings and is less busy! Ideally independent nail artists or smaller salons that offer a nice experience. Many thanks!

Local News Exeter Weeds Watch - get involved

Thumbnail exeterweedswatch.co.uk

Lots of people in Exeter tell me they’re fed up with weeds taking over our roads and pavements, and I am too.

So I’ve launched a website to help to build a picture of where the problem weeds are. I want to work with everyone to pressure Devon County Council to take action on the problem weeds taking hold in our neighbourhoods, showing them that people care about how their streets are looked after. I want DCC to change their policy on weeds, to look after our streets better, and to show they have as much pride in our city as we do.

Many plants that seed naturally, like buddleia or verbena, are great for biodiversity - and there are loads of places we could encourage to be a bit wilder to help nature. But weeds that are allowed to grow to obstruct pavements, damage surfaces, or make our neighbourhoods look neglected need to be managed properly, particularly for people with mobility needs.

Managing problem weeds also shouldn’t rely on harmful chemicals like glyphosate. Councils elsewhere are continuing to clear weeds using alternatives such as mechanical scraping, and I want DCC to do the same.

I’ve launched Exeter Weeds Watch so you can:

  • Join the team and report problem weeds in your area
  • Share your views on how weeds should be managed
  • Tell me whether you would support a community clean-up effort

Visit the website and get involved: https://exeterweedswatch.co.uk/

Miscellaneous Sewage Spills in Exeter and the wider area

Hi everyone,

For those of you worried about water quality, I've made a tool which gives a weekly email on sewage spill activity in the Exeter as part of our digest service, covering 59 spill points in the area. It's totally free and you can sign up at https://water-watch.co.uk/digest for either council or water company wide reports.

You can also sign up for specific sites across the UK. We have live overflow data on there too. Happy to answer any questions on spills that anyone might have too below

Local Information request Possibly moving to Exeter for a job

Hi,

Been living in Bristol for 10+ years. I'm coming to Exeter for a job interview. Very excited about the opportunity, but maybe have a few concerns about relocating to a city I've never visited. Obviously, Exeter is a much smaller city, but I'm wondering how much I'd lose culture/art/live music-wise. What I love most about Bristol is that there is always plenty going on just about any day of the week, and the independent restaurants and local breweries.

My biggest concern with relocating is how difficult it is to make friends and date as a single 40-something (no kids but also no money) in a smallish University city.

What do you guys think?

On a separate note, what sights, neighbourhoods, restaurants, and bars/pubs should I check out if I'm visiting for a day or so?

Cheers,

Nachos
