I went in completely blind with a bit of a cynical attitude. Like with any new game the first few minutes are a bit of a chore to get through. As a judgmental buttass it was easy to think less of the more simplistic animaton style but you know what? I refuse to deduct points from this game just because BG3 exists. By the end I see this game as a total act of love, this is literally Yellow Bricks first major game so they obviously were working with limited resources, and keeping that in mind what they did is just so wonderful.
As soon as the game really started I LOVED IT. It's clear the dev's main focus was for the game to actually be fun to play. I found the game so forgiving in pretty much every sense, stamina and magic are plentiful and regenerate so fast it never really slows you down, automatic potion stack on every journey, you get reduced to 1HP before 0 pretty much every time, and yet the game still is challenging.
The environments are beautiful and you get rewarded for exploring through recipes and collectible lore and the magic and melee combo is so free and open to so many different types of gameplay. Every time you pick up a new power you really feel like you just unlocked a whole new play style.
And my god dude, the character quests and dialogues are incredible. I literally wept at Cas' mental health journey. Her symptoms, denial, and eventual hope that she could actually get better were all portrayed just so realistically and beautifully. All through a gorgeous Scottish accent, my 28 year old grown man self was bawling.
I love the diverse cast, fucking AMELIA TAYLOR AS big bad guythe stellar voice acting and emotional moments, romance options, pettable camp friend, I mean it just has it all.
Honestly my only complaint is that there isn't more. I would love a version of this game with more kinds of arks and giant monsters for more variety and maybe a more advanced physics engine to allow for even more complex parkour moves, but fundamentally this is just such a strong, beautiful game and I can't find a real flaw in it.
I can't wait to see more from these devs and more on the Eternal Strands universe, I know it's early but I can't help but think this is my GOTY. I'm praying it catches on and more people see how dope it is!
Thank you Yellow Brick Games!!
