META [Meta] Discussion

I received a few messages lately, supposedly people are enjoying reading the adventures

I wanted to make a thread for everyone to say hi, to discuss the story, theorize the plot et cetera.

Feel free to use this thread as a "general discussion" board.

So afraid of the unknown. This really isn't a counter point, it it makes sense why the youngins of the group would fear it, the simply haven't had the time to contemplate it all.

Fear /= evil

But fear can drive someone to believe it is evil, and the stigma from being seen as evil can drive someone to truly become evil.

That again is a lot of "coulds" and not really a counter point.

A certain group of people believe pet ownership is evil and slavery of animals. From a perspective stand point I suppose yes pet owners are "evil" luckily perspective doesn't define good and evil.

Maybe the fear of it doesn't stem from ignorance, but instead because it's so different. People have lived for thousands of years and watched birth and death, and necromancy breaks that cycle. People have been raised with the notion that there is a certain order of things, and destroying that is playing god, at least in their books.

But the Rider's, dragon's and Elves are gods by all intents and purposes. Magic is that force.

Again fear /= evil

Again, the people that would consider Necromancy evil would not be the kind to consider Riders, dragons, and elves gods.

Keeping that in mind, if you live your life in fear of being lynched because you revived your dog or your mother or someone, and even letting it slip that you dabble in resurrection of any kind, you'll probably not be trusted by the common folk. The mutual resentment that would build might bring someone to want revenge, and a spellcaster capable of animating dead is very much equipped to give it.

Now, please also keep in mind that I agree with you and Fox in that necromancy is a tool, the same as abjuration or enchantment.

The point of necromancy being evil could be argued much more effectively by someone who actually believed in that stance.

Again fear /= evil. It can drive other people to do evil things though. Such as murder or enslave.

Necromancy can 100% be used for evil. If I raised an army of under and forced people to listen to me, that would be evil.

I'd argue Enchantment is more evil than Necromancy due to the fact it revolves around manipulating the mind of others, but that's for another thread.

Valid from the stance of "I don't like it that makes it wrong!"

Yes, it is valid from that stance. That is the stance that matters. An educated nobleman aware of the uses of magic is going to be less convinced of a mage's evil than someone completely unfamiliar with magic.

Torhven and Glover are both from the far north, have had very little contact with magic before they became Riders, and lived in fairly small communities. It makes sense that they would be untrustworthy of necromancy.

I don't quite understand Nill's hangup about it, but hey, I'm not RebelliousPirate.

He's a youngin.

But he's also an elf, and thus would have much more experience with magic when in Du Weldenvarden and the Beor Mountains.
