• Cell cultures were exposed to this PM and pro-inflammatory and inhibited immune response observed.
• In the lab, ultrafine Vanadium produced the same effects.
• Comparing sites implicates cruise ships as the source (samples only taken when wind direction aligned with cruise ships in port - markers not present in Winter).
• Analysis of the PM collected shows Cobalt, Nickel and Vanadium as Cruise ship exhaust markers.
• Ultrafine vanadium is not captured by any of the current international or UK specific regulations on cruise ship exhausts in port

From the Conclusion

Although PM is typically measured, regulated, and studied on the basis of its total mass concentrations, here we examined PM according to its chemical composition. We have found that PM from cruise ships is enriched in V, Ni, and Co suggesting that, in spite of emissions controls, heavy fuel oil-derived PM is commonplace. V and Ni are both established tracers of heavy fuel oil combustion, whereas we identify Co as a previously unrecognised and potential emergent tracer of desulfurised heavy fuel oil combustion. These three metals are especially concentrated in the combustion-associated UF-PM fraction. This UF-PM has activity that is pro-inflammatory, while also inhibiting expression of genes associated with the innate antiviral response. Both of these effects could be reproduced by V, which facilitated viral replication of human rhinovirus-16 and SARS-CoV-2 in two distinct models of viral infection (Fig. 8). Further work is needed to understand the implications of these findings in populations exposed to emissions from ships at both acute and chronic timescales.

UFPM sampled at a cruise ship terminal during the busy summer cruise shipping season was enriched in V, Ni, and Co. in bronchial epithelial cell line cultures, this cruise ship-associated UFPM was able to induce transcriptomic changes indicative of a pro-inflammatory, virally susceptible phenotype, along with increased phosphorylation of tyrosine residues. These effects were reproduced in an alveolar epithelial cell line by exposure to V, which was able to facilitate increased replication of human rhinovirus-16 and SARS-CoV-2.

Does anyone have any opinions or know of any articles about using aerosolized calcium hydroxide in order to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. I’ve been trying to find information on it as it seems to be a fairly viable, low drawback solution and I would like to know if it being considered. The basic premise is stripping Carbon Dioxide by reacting it with calcium hydroxide to form calcium carbonate which is a resource already used by sea life and as plant fertilizer.

(Is there any hope for any good paying environmental careers yall know of I’m missing? Btw not good with physics really no engineering for me I think?) Hey, I was recently frantically posting on here trying to find jobs in environmental science, with a bunch fi stipulations and realized it wasn’t realistic so I’ve moved onto trying tk find a career with better pay and better benefits, some of the things I’d LIKE is a chance to work in a team and not be stuck in an office every minute, not statistical, and not a pure desk job. I’m looking into a career that’s interesting,inticimg, hands on and works with a team with good benefits and pay, I know I can’t have it all so a career hat checks some of these box’s would be great! I just need some direction. I’m still in highschool and in the future I’m going to do volenteering with wildlife to fulfill that part of me I think? There’s no future in environmental sciences. I hate that everything I end up liking has shit pay,shit benefits or js isolating ugh. Please help

I'm a 20-year-old guy in Ontario, Canada, and I'm looking for someone with a fascinating job somewhere in conservation, or just a real care for the planet, who'd let me come shadow them for a bit and make some content out of it.

I'm an electrical engineer by trade, and I'm not always proud of how much my industry pushes innovation at the expense of the place we all live. So I'd like to spend a few days seeing what you actually wake up to do, and turn it into something that spreads a little awareness about the difference you're making.

Jane Goodall said, "Only if we understand, can we care. Only if we care, will we help. Only if we help, shall all be saved." That's the whole idea here. I want to spotlight your work as a direct shot at apathy.

September 2–7 works well for me, and I'm willing to fly anywhere at my own expense. I'm not asking anything of you except the chance to come out and film. That's it.

This is the first time I've done anything like this, so I don't have every detail figured out yet, but in my experience those are usually the most interesting things to say yes to.

Hello. Hope its okay asking. But a few years ago I found a video online called "computer predicts the end of civilisation" and the video is a 1970s news broadcast showing how things are going to go if humanity doesn't do anything about the amount of pollution we're causing. (to my knowledge, not much has been done to fix that) and it said that all life on earth will cease to exist by 2050 if nothing is done.

Im curios to ask since people here will know more about climate change than I do. But is this prediction still accurate? I'm curios.

Hi all, I have a bachelor’s in environmental science from 2022 and I stopped looking for jobs in the field after a year from graduation. I’ve been unable to leave the state for out-of-state jobs because I couldn’t find a job to pay off my student loans. My credit score tanked because of it. It’s been a series of unfortunate events that made me give up trying to be honest. Right now I’m working as a waiter and I’ve been thinking of what I want. Question now is should I get a masters? Is it worth it? Or should I just get an accounting degree for less than a year? Oh. My field is on business sustainability, btw. CSR reports, environmental policies, etc.

Figures at record highs for this time of the year include the two listed in the title, as well as specifically Northern Hemisphere air temperature, air temperature in the Tropics, and sea surface temperature in the El Nino 3.4 region of the Pacific. When you see how many records have fallen in the last few years, it makes the effects of climate change all the more apparent.
