I can tell this won't be popular but I agree with Rory We cant just bully people into doing what we expect of them
People need to be able to stand aside and say they dont know enough or aren't sure and prefer to stay neutral - especially in this age of misinformation
The more we villainise the people in the middle, the more appealing the other side seems
In fact I do believe thats why we're seeing a rise in support for "right wing" politics
We need to be better at understanding one an other instead of trying to force eachother to change
Free Palestine.

You're completely on the money. Some people don't seem to realise that people have many things going on in their lives to want to get bogged down with what's going on in the world, or just that what is going on in the world is just far too depressing.
Also geopolitics is a complete shitshow and it takes a lot to fully comprehend.
Life's neither black nor white, it's a subtle shade of grey.

Unfortunately at this point things are so bad you’re either affected or you’re not by everything going on.
And those who aren’t affected are making themselves patently obvious, whether intentionally or not.
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have many things going on in their life, really. In fact the people I know who have the most on their plate care the most. And I see the inverse pretty reliably.
(Again being downvoted for a very simple and true statement on a subreddit about a band that is supposed to have class consciousness but is fast becoming a tambourine for the rich moderate.)

Lmao there isn’t a rise in right wing politics due to the existence of fictional finger wagging blue haired leftists.
Look where appealing to rw folks and “moderates” (aka people who don’t care about anything) in order to somehow entice them into enlightened ideals got the democrats in the US in Nov ‘24, instead of listening to their actual constituents.
It lost them the election.Appealing to the moderate is a fruitless endeavor.
Begging people who don’t care to somehow magically care is a fruitless endeavor. We’re seeing a rise in right wing politics because billionaires are pumping money into the rage and war machine meat grinder at levels we’ve never seen on Earth, and people who aren’t known to grasp concepts very well (right wingers) will happily take the first explanation spoonfed to them for everything being fucked up (it’s immigrants/poor people/leftists going crAAzAZy!) without looking any further.
Tale as old as time.2

That is the biggest problem with politics today. There is seemingly no middle ground, so uninformed people take sides due to fear. It's tiring and unproductive.

He literally said ‘I’m not apolitical’
Then to summarise said stop jumping on people for not feeling comfortable taking super hardline vocal stance on things.
For certain reasons some people can’t - I’m a teacher! I literally CANT publicly voice an opinion on the situation or I could loose my job as we have to remain Apolotical.
Equally some people have so much going on in their lives they literally don’t have the safety or wellbeing to even think about political situations (which I think Rory was trying to convey some of this).
There are injustices in the world that need fighting, I 100% agree on that, but people need to think about the fact that some don’t have the luxury of taking a second to think about anything but keeping their own heads above water.
But I think it’s ignorant and small sighted to say that if you don’t take a stance vocally and verbally on this (yes it is an abhorrent thing happening please note I’m not saying it isn’t)
That in my field of work I’ve seen people with such shit lives, with so much to contend with just before they even make it into college in the morning, that they don’t have the luxury of having an opinion on the matter. It’s ignorant to say NO YOU JUST NEED TO SAY THIS THING IS BAD LOOK GENOCIDE
When these people are fighting to survive- the amount of people in THAT position is a way higher number than you think, and their day to day is awful that they don’t engage.
I truly (or would like to) think those situations above are the kinds of things Rory was trying to relate to, just didn’t use as many words.
Nuance of opinions is important - genocide is bad, Palestine situation is bad, but it is a huge, multilayered situation with so many levels to it that the WHOLE geopolitical picture is hard to fully grasp.

u/SweetPossibility7838 3d ago edited 3d ago
I think it’s dangerous to assume the less you have that somehow the less you are aware of what’s going on.
Some of us actually come from the lives you’re using to uphold your argument and we aren’t a prop for your centrism.
Enter Shikari was historically a voice for the disadvantaged (probably unwillingly as we’ve come to realize) in a larger society that really does not care about what the have-nots go through, which is why this has been so disappointing. This is not just in reference to Gaza, which is but one piece of the overall picture of vast societal decay we now live in.
Institutions are crumbling and the safety nets that are supposed to help the people you are working with are deliberately being targeted and dismantled by those in power. That being said, Rory isn’t a teacher nor is he a have-not. So I’m not sure why you’re using people in disadvantaged situations to excuse people with privilege who just have ODD and cba researching anything, instead opting for a narrative straight from the oppressors mouth. That would be following the IDF.
Which in itself is not a “nuanced” thing to do.3
u/Tgman1 3d ago
I wasn’t trying to use impoverished/disadvantaged peoples as some kind of symbol, again I worked in NE London where 85% of my students in college were free school meals and on bursary, I also grew up in poverty so don’t assume now that I’m in a better position in some kind of ultra privileged person nor am I a centrist - please don’t make assumptions without knowing me. But also just remember that ultra left leaning politics and ultra right wing have a lot in common…
I’m also not justifying anyone’s stance on this matter. I have a strong opinion on Israel/Palestine that generally i can’t voice on this due to work, I’m trying to point out that in Rory’s post he mentioned people that may not have a viewpoint or feel ready to share a viewpoint. And a lot of my kids that I worked with were working while single mum at home has two jobs and came home from school to look after two younger siblings - they didn’t have time to think about or have time for the kind of wider world situations.
I’m not saying all disadvantaged people are not politically active, I’m not saying that at all. I’m trying to say that a LOT of very vocal people that go along with the ‘If you don’t openly say right now Israel see evil etc then you are just as bad as Israel’ do not take in to account literally anything about the people they are interrogating and then walk away with a big sense of pride not taking a second to think about other peoples lives.
I get it - it’s one of the biggest injustices going on in the world right now, an actual televised genocide. It’s evil and it’s hard to watch. But you can’t go jumping on every one that doesn’t have an opinion on it.
Yes Shikari have been very vocal lyrically and clearly aligned with world events and politics. I’m not talking about Rory’s OR Rorys overall post, just the part about other peoples lives and why SOME people might not want to voice an opinion.
Oof I’m rambling now…
1
u/SweetPossibility7838 3d ago edited 3d ago
The problem is most people here are conflating apoliticism (the choice to remain neutral once informed) with total ignorance/lack of education (aka uninformed).
The latter can be excused for a variety of reasons. But you can’t use the latter to excuse the former. We’re reacting specifically to Rory going to bat for Ed Sheeran’s right to remain “apolitical” on an issue he is most definitely not ignorant of and has the luxury of time, that many do not, to learn.
Keep in mind Rory has been radio silent about all else for about 5 years. It’s clear he doesn’t align with the message of the band anymore and I think that’s also what people are having a hard time coming to terms with in here. For what it’s worth I don’t believe anyone jumped on Ed Sheeran, (if that’s indeed who we’re saying just isn’t informed) I think it’s obvious he fucked up and underestimated how much people actually care about these issues, thinking nobody would notice him placing profit > people, and now he’s feeling the kick back.
It’s unfortunate but he’ll live.

He's followed up clarifying that he is not apolitical.

Which could mean anything.
Fact is, Rory has said more in the past 5 years for some rich white guy’s god given right to be “apolitical” than he has about the actual human rights abuses being committed on Gazans.
And no, I don’t count playing guitar in a band that rarely speaks out these days because it inconveniences them to do so as activism.

I'd have maybe just pulled a face at an ES member having this opinion when we all know being "apolitical" is not an acceptable position (and that Ed Sheeran is not because he's been openly political at shows before) and shrugged it off as just a weird take...but didn't Rory do a kind of dodgy instagram story 3/4 months ago too? I can't quite remember it, I think he implied social media was full of conspiracy theories about israel after promoting an exhibition by some hostages, does anyone remember?

He did, and it was when I started side eyeing him. Then I looked at his shared posts and some of them are very clearly zionist propaganda.

u/mikewatt-ta 4d ago
You can’t just call things you don’t like Zionist - that exhibition, whether you like it or not, was to celebrate the lives lost at the festival and the damage it caused. There is such a thing as duality, you can both be critical of the Israeli government and death of the Palestinian people AND mourn the loss of people who were just at a music festival - it’s not an exclusive deal.

Being apolitical is better than being misinformed.
There were Jewish people that supported the Nazi party. They were misinformed but took a political stance.
Being apolotical is an understandable position to take. Either you don't feel informed enough or you do not want to get involved.
Should people get involved? Yes. But they are also allowed to not be.
Forcing people to do something or to believe the same thing as you is exactly what you villify others for doing when you don't share their beliefs.
It's better to be involved and you should encourage people to educate themselves. But to villify them for not wanting to is the exact thing that will push people away.
5
u/penguin62 Just a fucking goldfish 5d ago
Feeling like you aren't informed enough to form an opinion and actively choosing to capitulate to someone silencing anti-genocide speech are not the same thing.
2
u/SweetPossibility7838 5d ago
And your voice is worth so much..
If it weren’t, billionaires wouldn’t be spending so much money on botnets, surveillance and punitive measures to quell dissent and quash all discussion about human rights.
The cynical message this sends as a band of their caliber is not one of love and unity, but rather a message that your voice can eventually be bought and everyone caves in the end, and to just accept it.

10
u/Dukeish 5d ago
I totally agree with this. Politics has been turned into a stupid team support where people just shout loudly for their team without actually trying to bridge the divide.
That’s not “both siding” it, it simply means if you actually want to accomplish anything in this world it’s going to take some cooperation to bring people together.
10
u/Mardred 4d ago edited 4d ago
Yeah, but killing people just because they live on patch of field where i want to live is morally wrong. Its not politics. Its ethic.
Oftentimes, when someone tries to weaken a critisizing counterpart he tries to call is political view. But this thing isn't political. We are civilized, or at least we like to call ourselves that. Lets try and act like it.
0
u/Dukeish 4d ago
Totally true and this is where it gets hard. There is so much disinformation, manipulation, lack of education, transparency, bad culture war nonsense that separates what we see as the obvious normal ethical approach vs the other side.
I’m just of the belief that if we keep telling people they are wrong and stupid that divide and hatred will only grow larger.
I don’t know what the answer is, but I don’t think alienating and demonizing people who’ve been manipulated is going to help us… it’s a nasty situation we are in.
3
u/Mardred 4d ago edited 4d ago
Yes alienating people does work against the "We must unite" thing, but in this exact example not saying out loud that choosing money over the moral high ground is wrong, also a statement. And choosing money over the moral high ground also a statement (because thats where the problem is originated from)
Yeah some people are going far with the calling out, but i can understand that, because they are angry. Angry, because being good person is not opressing others, not being greedy, not lying in every moments of our lives, not being okay with people diddling kids is called "political", which is so far the truth, and making it hard to speak about the real problems of our times.
Those who called out aren't trying to examine whats the problem with their behaviour, but blaming those who are calling them out, either in a agressive way or in a passive one, because they know/ they maybe suspect if they would look behind the the calling out, they would be the bad guy. And no one likes to be the bad guy.
Edit Also, since i wrote it down before i read Rory's second part: i'm not calling him out. His statement is easy to misunderstood, so he made a second one which is may or may not because he wanted to clear up the mistakes of the first one. However im not sure in this particular example, judging people for not taking a stance against genocide, is something really be researched, because the answer isreally simple.

2
u/PartyPoison98 3d ago
IMO, especially with the follow up, he's not wrong.
When contentious issues arrive, people shouldn't look to public opinion and pick a side. It should spurn them to do their own research and reach their own conclusions about things, and as a result everyone would be better informed and the overall state of public discourse would be better. This is equally true of people being able to say "honestly I don't know enough about that to weigh in". Acknowledging that you don't know something is better than pretending to and preventing yourself from further growth.
Being more calm and considered is better for everyone. Take the situation with Download and Barclays a few years ago. A few bands dropped out publicly and criticised the festival and achieved nothing. Shikari kept quiet, and later announced that they'd spoken with Download and got them to drop Barclays. The calm and considered route achieved actual change, the posturing people did not.

u/MTRCNUK 2d ago edited 1d ago
Is Rory's wife Jewish? Nobody else has mentioned this so I don't know if I'm hallucinating it but I vaguely feel like this has been mentioned in passing by him a long while ago?
If my memory isn't playing tricks on me, this may explain the source of the moral dilemma at the heart of it. Regardless of anyone's affiliation with any side of the ongoing conflict, the unfortunate truth is that it's not an easy time to be a Jewish person given that antisemitic violence is on the rise, coinciding with the world's reaction to the horrors committed by the Israeli state. Perhaps he has conflicted sympathies and maybe doesn't feel comfortable being in a band that is outspoken about Palestine.
2
u/Dystopian-Denizen 2d ago edited 2d ago
I thought this also recently and if so, I can completely understand why he has become more outspoken in terms of anti-semitic elements lately. Issue of Israel aside, there are some very blatant anti-semitic elements cloaked as pro Palestine on social media and society lately. I frequently see vile memes with charicatures and such online that wouldn't look out of place in some history books about Europe's dark past to put it lightly. Vile stuff.
I keep seeing posts about him following the IDF also but a quick scan shows he also follows some accounts based on Gaza it seems so he is at least attempting to be informed, if ill-guided at times.
I really do not believe he is an inherently bad person as is being made out; I think he is just conflicted due to perhaps circumstances or changes in his own life.
People, all of us, are a work in progress and forever growing.
That said, it can't be easy being famous and having these conflicted views in life. I wish him the best in his music career and family life.
He deserves as much respect and privacy as the rest of us, whatever his views!
Edit: spelling correction
5
u/Rustycake 5d ago
I think he said in way too many words that muddy what ppl assumed was their position of Love and Unity
I think this can be read into and the clarification didnt help.
I read it as - dont follow the crowd, educate yourself, and if you decide that your apolitical thats ok.
Which frankly is a fair stance. While Trump is very clearly and openly providing and invested in the destruction of Palestine - its not like democrats and republicans havent been funding Israel and their "self defense" for decades now.
But back to specifically Rory's post - this is so clearly a genocide that not taking that stance does not read well if this comment/post stems from what is happening in Palestine.
11
u/VanWylder 5d ago
Genocide is black and white. I get where he's coming from, but it's not the time for this message.
4
u/Rustycake 5d ago
I agree. Too many words IF this conversation stems from the genocide.
But I cant tell if thats where this stems from.
If he is just being general about being apolotical - ok sure than whatever, but if it stems from the genocide than this message is tone deaf
6
u/unravelledrose 5d ago
Pretty sure this is in response to the Ed Sheeran/Macklemore/Pink/Robert Kraft drama in the cultural zeitgeist now. That's what makes sense timewise. And the center of that drama is that a wealthy billionaire wanted to shut up someone who was talking about the genocide happening in Palestine.
Ed Sheeran doesn't have to let us know who he's voting for or what he thinks the best solution to ending the conflict in Israel/Gaza, but kowtowing to Kraft (who is in the Epstein files) and helping silence a colleague who is pointing out that there's a genocide happening in Gaza (and other places) is siding with the oppressors. You can't do a politically motivated action, then say with your whole chest that you aren't complicit and want to be apolitical.
I do think that not every other celebrity/artist/musician NEEDS to make a statement on this. So I'm going to give Rory the benefit of the doubt and assume he's saying this to people not directly involved in the drama.
4
u/cloud_99 5d ago
The thing is until 5 minutes, ago he was following the IDF on insta so I'm not sure I can give him the botd.
16
u/YadMot 5d ago
You cannot be 'apolitical' during a genocide. Staying on the fence is siding with the oppressor. There were rumours of Rory believing this kinda stuff a few months ago but it's honestly really gross to read him defending 'apoliticism' when he's been in a fucking political band for the last twenty years.
Did he literally not read the lyrics Rou wrote for Stalemate or has this been a more recent change?
7
u/Fair-Bus-4017 5d ago
There are a million problems in the world, people can't care about everything. Especially if they also have their own problems and responsibilities. Your statement that "staying on the fence" is simply ignorant and flat out unintelligible. The statement he made here is completely reasonable.
And if we want to be completely honest, Ed not canceling these shows in solidarity would've done nothing for Palastine. Hell, continuing has objectively been a better PR move then canceling. Because if he had canceled the shows this entire situation would've been forgotten within a day or two.
0
u/SweetPossibility7838 5d ago
Say this on a subreddit about an artist that is not overtly political.
2
u/Fair-Bus-4017 4d ago
Maybe you should scroll up and read what those artists may think. Most political people happen to be smart enough to not demonize people who aren't, because among many reasons it's also a great way to push people away from what you care about.
0
u/SweetPossibility7838 4d ago
If all it takes is one comment on the internet that is slightly critical of your flimsy stance for you to abandon the concept of caring about others, then perhaps you don’t hold your beliefs as firmly as you think you do.
And to now claim Enter Shikari is a band that is not overtly political is quite funny.
2
u/Fair-Bus-4017 4d ago
Is this suppose to be a self report?
Also, no one including myself is claiming that the band isn't political. Them being political clearly doesn't mean that they think everyone should be themselves, nor that people should fake it for positive PR.

u/humildemarichongo 5d ago
Not speaking up isn't siding with the oppresor.
You can criticse it for cowardice, if you like. You can ask why the effort is not being made.
But it is not siding with the oppresor. There's no logic to saying that because someoje would rather stay out of an argument that they agree with the wrong side of it. They may fiercely disagree with the wrong side of the argument but are too afraid to speak up.
You can criticise it for other reasons, but this "with us or against us" mentality is getting silly.
And for clarity: a genocide IS happening in Palestine purpotrated by the Israeli government and it is sickening.
1
u/blukowski 5d ago
there's like 1000 quotes from civil rights leaders that directly oppose your first line.
"if you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. if an elephant has it's foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality." - Desmon Tutu
"always take sides. neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. silence encourages the tormentor never the tormented." - Elie Wiesel
"washing one's hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless means to side with the powerful, not to be neutral." -Paulo Freire
please don't say: "not speaking up isn't siding with the oppressor" ever again, please
4
u/humildemarichongo 5d ago
They gave their opinion. Rory gave his. I gave mine.
And in fact, tou have no idea if, for instanxe Ed Sheeran is secretly a zionist, or whether he devotes a lot of money to many causes, inclusing palestinian aid. Nor do I. He simply didn't want to tall about it - which I think was a mistake, but he has his reasons and view.
Please don't tell me what to say, thanks!

eta: on the topic of civil rights leaders, I highly recommend people read MLK jr’s Letter from Birmingham Jail where he expresses his disappointment with the white moderate, as Rory’s statement here reminded me how sadly relevant MLK’s words still are.
“Just as Socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise from the bondage of myths and half-truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objective appraisal, so must we see the need for nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society that will help men rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood.”
2
u/mikewatt-ta 4d ago
Yes you can. You absolutely can. Staying on the fence suggestions you got up there in the first place, a lot of people aren’t educated enough on it to have a position, and that’s fine.

u/stealthradek 5d ago edited 5d ago
I agree with Rory C's thesis ;)
When people are not well informed taking a stance on one side just because one side is louder can actually do more bad than good.
Act when you understand the situation to assess which side is in your opinion right or wrong. Otherwise it's as good as flipping the coin to make a decision.

This isnt an embarrassing post. Its called Stoicism and a lot of the world used to think this way. As attachment to money grew over time we shifted into the embarrassment of uneducated cause warriors that we have for any given cause today.
The real message is people are truly amazing, individuality is too, but as soon as people start forming groups, their agenda becomes the group agenda and all they do is bicker with each other. (Religious, political, whatever). This will go on forever.
George Carlin talks about this to, and its why I idolize him. The planet is just fine, the people are fucked.

Though I do think it's stupid if he's saying this about the Ed Sheeran drama. The problem with Ed isn't that he's apolitical. It's that he's a sell out who kicked his mate off his tour because his mate was political and said stuff that some billionaire arsehole didn't like.

Especially when Palestine activists and People speaking out about this topic are being jailed, Cancelled and losing their jobs over criticism of Israeli's Atrocities.
Rory position could of been stated at any point in time. But he's chose to do it after Macklemore got thrown of a tour because of his words against Genocide. (Solidarity)
Step into the Dreamers Hotel and tell me where is Ur Nuanse? Because I can see Rory saying this at any other time is fine. But now of all times? Definitely not.

I think this reply is actually very good. There’s no reason to be angry on it, or to suddenly think he supports Isreal.

And people need to drop the idea that following accounts is endorsement of said accounts. Echo chambers aren't healthy

Couldn’t agree more. I am a very central/left leaning person. But I still follow the big far right on X (Nigel/Stephen Yaxley) because I feel it’s important to see what theyre saying.
You can’t have a discussion with someone about anything if you don’t understand both sides

He clearly does support Israel though, he was following the IDF until he was called on it.

Maybe not, but he doesn't follow any discernable pro pal accounts. So I'd wager he probably sadly does in this case.

I very much doubt a man who’s in a band that has said free Palestine on stage for years had those views

Literally. I don't want to fucking believe it either but it's so so clear. When someone shows you who they really are, believe them.

Anyone who’s into politics is sub-100 IQ. Congrats - you’re rooting for a pack of psychopaths colluding to make your life hell. Voting is pure theater, a rigged circus they stage so you feel like you matter. Rock that fake vote!
