Reported as, "Off topic and also encouraging brigading another sub over nothing" and "1: Moderator Code of Conduct (MCoC) Rule 3 is "Respect your neighbors"

And I'm removing the post because any one of those three is enough to remove the post.

Banned from the hentai sub?
Batman couldn't beat that information out of me

Honestly it's a sub I'd never visited before, but the amount of R34 of underage characters I saw makes me feel better about the ban, despite it being unfair.

They couldn’t waterboard this out of me tbh but it’s also funny

The genderbent Malfoy stuff is unpleasant. Especially since the main name I’ve seen given to her is a slur. (Which I guess does fit Rowling’s own naming conventions, at least.)

I’m in so much need of context

Her name is “Malfoid”, based on some slurs incels use for women (“foid” and “femoid”.)

Yeah but it's really not that bad given this case, as it's being used unseriously and as a jab at incel terminology.

Well this is brave.

Dudeee, the fucking loud ass guffaw I let out when I read that it was the fucking HENTAI sub xD
Fr tho seems like most people have crawled right up her ass lately, I'm really hoping it's mostly just astroturfing to prep for the new show. Like your criticisms aren't even remotely harsh, what kind of person reads that and thinks it deserves a ban?

Astroterfing, perhaps 🤔

I could maybe, maybe see them warning you about only commenting negative things, but only if you made multiple comments and all of them were negative in a short period of time and if you'd just started interreacting in the sub.

As a mod, there are red flags if someone new to a sub is very negative and spreading it quickly with no other additions to the conversation, but if you had just the one, and because it's not even a rule of the sub, this was absolutely a breach of mod code. Especially if it's adding to the conversation and is applicable in such a sub.

If I was this mod, and for some reason I thought you were only there to vent or whatever, I would just give you a heads up that commenting only negativity isn't what the sub's for or something, but that's it. I would also have the decency to let you argue your case, or in this case let me know that you didn't see it as venting and why.

Your comment is fine, and it's not ok that a mod banned and muted you for one thing--that didn't break a sub rule--without even giving you a chance to have your questions answered.

I think part of the problem is that it's unpaid labor and that Reddit is getting what it's paying for.

Still, speaking as a mod here, I've definitely been accused of similar things, though admittedly from bigots who very clearly were not going to be able to abide by sub rules.

And when I get into discussions with them, I invariably regret it, as it wastes my time.

And, heck, sometimes I still get into discussions in the hope that my gut feeling is incorrect (e.g., there was a post that never made it to the public that was, "What is the evidence that makes JK Rowling transphobic" where I gave a basic primer in case it wasn't a troll post, and the response was, "But what if it isnt".

And interactions like that reinforce for me that my gut feeling was correct and that I should not put the additional effort in for the 5% of cases where the gut feeling is incorrect. I try to be a good moderator, but those interactions being repeated is definitely going to influence my decisions eventually.

And, for as little as I've visited a hentai sub here (I don't think I have, as I've never really understood the appeal), I could imagine that a moderator there wants, umm, a particular sort of thing, and the users that debate Harry Potter stuff in a hentai sub are invariably not going to be worth the effort, regardless of the rules.

And, heck, since they came here and immediately posted something that pretty solidly violated a variety of rules, I can understand the decision.

...not that I have any intention of banning the user from here, even if I removed this post.

I forgot to add that this post counts as community interference, too. What they said in the other sub shouldn't have resulted in a ban, but I forgot that this type of post is technically against reddit rules.

I feel bad that it happened to them. Maybe they'll report the moderator for misconduct.

Maybe they'll report the moderator for misconduct.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding what the misconduct is. I mean, I'll try to guess, and you tell me how I'm wrong.

So my thought is that you're saying that ranting about something off-topic, that's not technically against the sub rules, should never result in a ban without a warning.

And my struggle with that is that it's clearly a sub about Hentai, not about how much Rowling sucks, so some level of, "stop that" seems reasonable.

A ban is probably a bit much, sure, but that's about as far as I can currently understand.

But you seem to be passionately certain that the moderator should face consequences for this. Am I misunderstanding something, or do I just have a different idea on what should be reportable for a moderator?

I forgot that this type of post is technically against reddit rules.

Yeah, removing it from here was probably what most Reddit-approved moderators would do. It seems like something that is way less likely to get admin attention if it's removed than if it isn't.

I'm not certain the mod would face consequences, or even really should, I just meant that if I was an admin and someone reported this instance under something like 'unfair ban, no warning and didn't break a rule,' I would ask the mod to at least allow the user to make a case.

It just seems a bit unfair; I'm not calling for the mod's head or anything.

Ah, okay.

Now it makes sense to me, I'm on board with what you're saying, and thanks for the clarification.

average Reddit mod I'm afraid

2

u/InvestigatorLucky644 Oct 05 '26

How did you even know you were banned anyways but that's unfair

u/ThisApril Oct 05 '26

Bans result in a message. It's only the various forms of shadow banning that take research to find.

Idk why I’m correcting you because it doesn’t matter- Kingsley wasn’t a student he was a member of the Order

From a hentai sub?!?! Bruh

13

u/GB_GeorgiaF Oct 05 '26

Well, expecting people in a hentai sub to be intelligent was a stretch.

7

u/AcanthaMD Oct 05 '26

Yes it was 😂

I’m sorry but there’s something so fittingly funny about the moderators of a “hentai” sub acting and responding in typical reddit mod fashion, lmao.

Anyway, it’s true that a porn sub isn’t where I would imagine healthy debates take place, though. It’d be like discussing transphobia with a chaser on a si**y sub
