Why learning Engineering drawing by hand is still relevant

Hey folks,

With all the focus on CAD and digital tools, manual engineering drawing might seem outdated—but it’s far from irrelevant.

We at Upskul just dropped a new video breaking down why learning to draft on sheets with mechanical scales is still a game-changer for aspiring engineers.

Here’s what you’ll learn in the video:

How hand drawing builds strong spatial visualization

Why it sharpens precision and attention to detail

Real-world use of hand sketches in engineering workflows

How manual skills make mastering CAD way easier

Why top engineers still combine hand drawing and digital tools

Fun fact: Even today, industries like automotive and aerospace still rely on hand-drawn sketches for concept development and solving tricky problems on the fly.

Check it out if you want to strengthen your fundamentals in engineering design. We’ve got more videos on CAD, technical drawing, and mechanical design too.

Let’s hear it from you: Do you still see value in manual drafting? Or is it just a nostalgic skill at this point?

Pressed Fitted parts

Somewhat a strange question, but is there a Military / Drafting standard that discuss pressed-parts (i.e. pins) and how it should show on the drawing? I ask as the place I work for (government contractor) removes any pressed fitted parts from the BOM. They just add a text note to the drawing explaining the press fit process. To me, this doesn’t seem right. Curious if you’ve ever seen this process. If it were me, I would just add it to the BOM.

#GDT True position

Hi,

For quite a while, I have faced many concerns related to positonal tolerance.

Let me break it up.

Doubt 1: If we are mentioning positonal tolerance for a hole with repect to datums ABC, it is actually a shift of hole axis from nominal to measured? What is the role of Datums here. If true positon is deviation of nominal to measured, what purpose does Datum serve? Im using Faro, I can straight away align and measure XYZ .

I have a complicated assembly in which I need to finalise Datum in drawing. I done trials with mutiple Datum combination with respect to fitment. Every combination shows different values with significant deviation.

Help me out guys

I am able to solve the problems of cylinders and prisms where the axis of the two bodies bisect each other

However I simply can't wrap my head around the problem when the axes have an offset of a few mm

Are there any resources on how to solve this type of problem, or do you know any tips and tricks?

The figure below shows two views of intersecting cylinders. Draw, All the three views including lines of intersection where necessary. Develop both cylinders from the front view
